Good rates
Second time playing this course. Facilities were in decent shape but need upkeep. Greens were in really good conditions but fairways and bunkers need maintenance. Great golfnow prices but not for the full asking price.
Great Layout but Needs Work
The first thing that caught my eye when I played is the condition of the greens. They were very nice compared to other courses in the area. Fairways and bunkers need work as well as the tee boxes. Snack and drink prices are a little high and so is the golf itself. I would play Hidden Valley more often if the price to play wasn't so high. I love the layout of the course. Difficult course, good course, but a little pricey.
Good course
I had previously played this course and was not happy, mainly due to the staff being so rude. This time I was pleasantly surprised. New people in the clubhouse made for a very comfortable environment. Course was in decent shape. Will definitely return.
Great Course for the Money
I used to play this course back in my college days because they had a good student price. I had not play the course in years and was apprehensive when I saw the reviews by Cobras04 and Englishf. The "mean lady" in the pro shop was very nice to me and went out of her way to help me. At a lot of other courses when I come in with a GolfNow Tee time the staff is very rude and act like I am cheating them out of something. So I don't know if those other guys were rude to her or maybe just caught her on a bad day.
As for the course, I would say it is as good as any other public course in the area except for Cobblestone. The greens were in good shape and rolled true and the fairways were nice. Some of the tee boxes needed work, but I saw where they were redoing some of them. The rough was just ok, but there were some areas on the edges of the course that you could see they had erosion problems, but I figured I shouldn't hit the ball there anyway.
The layout has always been one of my favorite in Columbia and the course conditions have come a long ways from when I was in college. I will definitely be going back.
Terrible golf experience
First you have to deal with the staff which is some of the most miserable people in the world, then it's $40 for 18. Paying that you would think it would be a nice course but it is far from that. The fairways are all basically dirt and greens are in awful condition. I will never play at this course again and wish I never would have. For the value on this course to be worth it, it should be like $8 for 18. Other than that I would stay away from this course.
Worst Course I've ever played...
Let's see:
Pulled into the parking lot and the club house and surrounding practice facilities are of standard to subpar quality
Lady in the pro shop was mean and unapproachable
Course smelled like sewage in some areas
Standing water in "bunkers" overgrown with weeds
Fairways were an awful mixture or sand, rocks, grass, and weeds and poorly maintained
Some tee boxes are just dirt or weeds and uneven
Starter flew past us in the gas powered carts in the middle of my backswing
Greens look nice but need to be cut
All in all, I wish I had my money back.
I saw your comment and another comment as was worried about playing this course. I played on July 4, 2015 and had a great experience. I am not sure what happened with your experience but the lady inside the clubhouse was great to me and my group.
The course was in as good of shape as any other public course in the Columbia area with the exception of Cobblestone. The greens were in great shape and the fairways were nice. The rough was just okay and there were some erosion problems in some areas but they were in spots that should not come into play. Some of the tee boxes needed work but I saw where they had closed some of the tee boxes and had put down sprigs on them. If I were you I would give the place another shot. I think it is one of the best layouts in Columbia but has always had trouble with their course conditions in the past. It has certainly come a long ways from my college days.
Fairway need attention.
Fairway need attention. Lots of dry spots. Green we're fast. Some tee boxes where just dirt
Hard and challenging course.
Have played this course for twenty years and fairways are in as good shape now as they have ever been. The greens are well maintained but in need of more water. The group of four I played with had no ball marks to repair the entire day. A good example would be the first par 3 on the back nine (80 yards over a tree). I used a sand wedge to sky a shoot over the tree and land short of the flag by 10 feet. Not only did the ball not leave a mark on the green but also rolled 25 feet pass the hole all up hill. My take on golf is well maintained courses should require repairs for ball marks after good shots. Turn the water on those greens Hidden Valley.
When I read your comments, I was hesitant about playing this course. I am not sure what happened to you or if you were just upset about paying $40 for 18 holes. (In case you didn't know, $40 is the going rate for 18 holes in the Columbia area) I played on July 4th and had a great experience. The people inside the club house were very nice to me. When I have used GolfNow at other courses, sometimes I get treated like I did something wrong.
I believe the course was as good as any public course in the Columbia area with the exception of Cobblestone. The greens were in great shape and the fairways were full of grass. There were some rough tee boxes but I saw they were working on them and the rough was just okay. There were some erosion problems but it was in areas that shouldn't be in play. I would suggest giving it another shot if I were you.
