The Preserve at Verdae
About
The Preserve at Verdae sprawls across a lush landscape of rolling hills and meadows covered with beautiful Carolina forests. Formerly known as Verdae Greens, the golf course was completely revamped but one of the primary goals of the renovation was to find harmony between golf and nature. The carefully reworked course does just that, blending seamlessly into its scenic surroundings. Rambling brooks wander across the layout and provide water hazards on a few holes. The wind is also a major factor on this golf course. The breezes can be either light and refreshing or strong and blustery, making proper club selection even more important. The most photographed hole on the golf course is the par-3 second. If you're lucky enough to come when the azaleas are blooming, this hole offers a breathtaking setting.

Beautiful but tough finishing hope. Photo submitted by u000001682547 on 10/03/2013
Great greens, but they're going a little overboard with the whole "preserve" thing, in my opinion.
They really have done a superb job with the greens at Verdae. However, I take issue with the "preserve' thing as it seems the main thing they are preserving is gasoline in their lawn equipment. Far too many weeds make up the areas intended to be 'preserved' in their natural state. The tee boxes were inconsistently maintained. Also, the rough is way to rough in many areas, which for the casual golfer greatly slows down the pace of play. Last Sunday was over 4:30, but it was the threesome in front of our foursome that was the problem. They looked like 30 handicappers and they were playing it all the way back! It is a challenging course for sure and it's location is ideal if you're close to downtown G'ville. I feel it's a little pricey, but the natural economic laws should take care of that, eventually. But then, that's why I shop GolfNow.com!
Precision Required
Verdae is the most centrally located course to Greenville, but do not let the convenience lull you into a sense of security. More holes than not have trouble lurking off the fairways and greens for the shot that is slightly off line or if distance is not controlled. I would recommend playing up a tee for the 8+ handicappers to enable opportunities for shorter irons into greens. Greens are relatively quick, but grain makes shorter putts very challenging. Par is a great score at the opening two holes, with both requiring longer irons into the green from the blue/black tees. 5-7 and 9-11 are scoring holes, although hazard awaits those who get out of position or hit poor shots on 5 of these 6 holes. Number 15 may be the most challenging Par 3 in the area from the back tee at 235 yards with hazard fronting the green. The par 5 18th is a disappointing finishing hole unfortunately, requiring a layup off the tee, with close to a 90 degree dogleg to the right straight up the hill to a 3 tiered green. With some fine tuning, Verdae could be very good, but some of the rocky areas off fairways and awkward design of certain holes (5, 7, 17, 18) make it a slightly above average public venue for the area.
Great day for golf on a great course!
The course was in great shape and the pro shop staff was very friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the starter questioned us about why we were a behind time at the turn and we were right behind the group in front of us, couldn't play any faster because it was busy on Memorial Day weekend . I thouroughly enjoyed The Preserve at Verdae experience and will return.
great value for a friday afternoon tee-time
I would pay $30 or more for this course and I paid only $18 including a cart. I am very pleased.
Excellent course
This was the first time my friends and I played this course, it was challenging but fun. The wildlife that you see was great, I walked up to 5 feet to a red tailed hawk standing in the middle of the fairway. The greens and fairways was in excellent condition, and the staff at the course was friendly and made you fill like you was a member. A excellent experience, will book this course again with Golf Now. Thanks, Jettdaddy.
the greens are tricky
nice course. must drive it straight and the greens are tricky.
Requires time and money...
This is a great course but it requires a large amount of money and time to bring it to its full potential and I don't see signs of either taking place now or in the near future. I have the feeling that the ownership has neither the inclination to spend the time to bring this course up to speed and from all appearances won't be spending the money either. Too bad as this course really has potential. I know it's early in the season but way too much needs to be done.
Will play it again
For this time of year the course was in very good condition. Most greens rolled well with only a couple exceptions. Minor course maintenance going on, but should be expected. Have played the course before and hope to play it again soon.
Decent course
This is a decent course with a pretty layout. There is a decent amount of work being done on it, so there were closed tee boxes and spotty fairways. Should be nice when all the work is done and the grass has grown in all the way for the season. Still a lot of brown grass. Greens were in nice shape
nice course
The guys I played with we loved the challenges on this course
They call it "Slow Play Verdae" for a reason
Will be much better when the fairway grass comes in - right now it's like hitting off of a highway - the ground is so compacted.
Usually a verynice course
This has always been one of my go-to course when I have a day off work. During my last round the conditions were awful. The usually fast and smooth greens had not been cut and the greens were like velcro. I will give this course another chance because there is a lot of work being done to get the course ready for spring (city tore up some of course running sewer lines directly through the course this past winter). I will hopefully amend my review in a few weeks as I believe this place will be be looking even better after they are finished with all the improvements.
Terrible condition
I've played this course many times in the past and it is typically my favorite course in the Greenville area. At this time, however, the course is in absolutely terrible condition. The area around the greens is so poor that it's impossible to chip. The fairways are one large divot. The tees on 11 are under repair and we had to hit off of a AstroTurf mat. Number 12 was so ugly that a comment was made that "this looks the set to an apocalyptic wasteland movie". I would not recommend playing this course for at least a few months and hope they can return it's grounds to the conditions that the course deserves.
Not bad not great
Decent course but should be in better shape for what they normally charge. Tee boxes are not overseeded. Looks as though they are making improvements as only one 9 is open. Can't recommend it in its current state unless you get a really good deal.
Greens were in great shape. Ball rolled extremely well.
The course was under construction so we only got to play the front 9 but we got to play it twice and it was only 14 bucks so no complaints here. 60 dollar course for 14 bucks = GREAT DEAL!
Would go here again
Altho' Verdae only has the front 9 open you get to play it twice if you pay for 18. The back 9 is under maintenance. By repeating the same 9 in the same round - I found I could improve on my round and took off 4 strokes!! Great pace of play and in pretty good winter condition.
The course was great,it's greens were one of the best ever putted on.
All I have to say is go play this course you will love it.
Only 9 holes open...
Missed the Course Alert that advised only 9 holes open (until spring). Even the open 9 had the feel of being undr construction, so not the best. Course typically tough with fast and sometimes severe greens; very important to be below the hole. Will wait until front 9 reopens to play again!
Good condition
Course was real empty. Some reviews stated only 9holes were open but we were able to play a full 18. Greens were real quick as they had them cut really short. Rest of course looks great even though grass was in winter mode. Tee boxes were a little abused but nothing where you couldn't find a surface to hit from. For the price couldn't find a better deal and course! Love going here to play when in town!
Very challenging
This is a great course, but I only had the opportunity to play the back 9 twice due to a sewer line repair that was taking place on the front 9. I would call ahead to find out if the repairs are complete. I can't wait to see the rest of the course. It was in great shape!
