Absolutely terrible.
I’ve played both courses at Fort Belvoir the past 20 years. The greens were unplayable, the fairways were brown, and the course is rotting away. I can’t believe MWR is allowing service members to pay full price for this experience. It’s really sad.
A golfing abomination.
I’ve played this course for 25 years when I lived here and then it was decent to good. When I went looking for the pro after the round the staff said they had bad weather. I live in Hampton roads and we had 30 days straight of 95 degrees and higher and every course is still in great shape. The greens at Belvoir are barren and unplayable, worst greens I’ve ever seen in 40 years, shameful. There should be an online warning about the course conditions, never coming back.
Terrible conditions
I use to like Belvoir but I’m now very disappointed with the course conditions. Need a lot of attention to get the course in a good shape. Most of the sand traps were just a mess. Fairways not too bad but the surrounding areas at the rough were hazards… you are very lucky to find a ball in you miss the fairway… bee sure to carry a lot of balls to complete a round there. The greens, what is in my opinion the most important part of a golf course, were literally ground. Sorry, but it’s the truth.
Play somewhere else
Course is in abysmal condition, greens are aerated and sanded but there’s not a semblance of grass on most. Completely chewed up. Other areas are in horrible condition as well. Trash cans overflowing. Staff is always friendly but the maintenance team definitely needs work. Weeds growing up all over the already horrible cart paths. Save your money and play somewhere else.
Save your money
Don’t even waste your money here. The greens are in term only. All the greens are chewed up and might have a couple blades of grass on them. The sand traps are rock hard and many of them have exposed concrete/asphalt showing. The golf carts are old and a safety hazard with how much the elevation changes. Our cart would eventually stop despite having the brake pedal pegged to the floor. The 2nd rider in our cart had to get out on a hill so it would be able to clear it.
Maintenance on a course is a given but most courses advertise the maintenance and/or give you a discount to play on a course undergoing extensive upkeep….Belvoir…nada.
Trash cans were overflowing on the course and many of the water stations didn’t even have a cooler in them.
And yes that is a picture of a raccoon by the 2nd green. Wasn’t too sure if he was still sleeping a Saturday rager off or had moved onto greener pastures but he was out there in full glory.
Love the layout
Woodlawn is the best layout of the two courses. I play the blue tees, and love the challenge that presents. The course had not been in the best of shape this year but has definitely improved. I played alone on the front 9, and caught up to a 3-some on number 10. That allowed another single to “catch me”, so we played as a twosome on the back. Pace was fine. Had a great time!
Had to play Gunston Course
Booked Woodlawn Course which is better. Was forced to play Gunston because there was a tournament on Woodlawn. I wish courses would update their status better with GolfNow. Otherwise, booking Fort Belvoir is unknown on which course you’ll get until you show up which is unfortunate since one course is championship golf while the other is a bit short. Still a good value on a hot deal and course conditions were above average!
Great Layout
I love the Woodlawn Course layout. A lot of doglegs and elevation changes. Greens were in great shape. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the areas around the greens and many of the fairways. Several bunkers were full of junk and trash. Fairways need some more hot temps to fill in (clumpy with a lot of bare spots. If your fun meter pegs with fun layout and shot-making, then play Woodlawn. If manicured fairways and aprons are important, go elsewhere.
Extremely poor conditions
A tournament had just finished and I was the first player after them. I played as a single. That was great because I finished in 3 hours. That was the only positive of the round. The fairways lacked grass, and were basically wet mud with tons of snakey pulp (old cut gas’s washed out throughout the fairways. The greens had been punched so putting was almost impossible. Woodlawn used to be nice course. Maybe it will be later in the Spring or Summer, but right now I would have rather played Montclair!!
Woodlawn was close for aeration, shifted everyone to Gunston which is in horrible shape.
Computer system was down and Woodlawn course was closed so they combined both groups of tee times into one course. Round roof almost 5 hours on a 2.5-3hr round in the middle of the week.
