Pohick Bay Golf Course

About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Tough Layout.
Not a very long course but due to its layout it forces you to practice discipline from the tees. Greens were still recovering from aeration but should be great in a week or two. Roughs were a bit high which adds to the challange when you’re off the fairway.
Course almost in prime shape
It’s getting greener, with most bunkers up to par. Greens still had a little bit of sand left over from the aeration but not to bad.

Glad to learn your experience was a positive one. Hope to see you again soon!
Fun Day
Staff is great. Pace of play was excellent. Fairways need work.

u000007199027, we’re so happy to hear you had a good experience. Have a great day!
Back 9 is nearly lost
Used to love Pohick, but the back only maybe 2-3 holes have grass in the fairways. The rest look like a floodplain that then got hit with a drought and us now covered in crispy seaweed. Staff are always friendly, driving range is cool. Pace of play is atrocious, 2h35m to play 9 is ridiculous for an 11:40 weekday round. I bailed after 9 because I couldn’t finish 18 in time to pick up my child from daycare.

The reason parts of the course are rust color is because grounds crew is spraying to help promote the growth of Bermuda grass. Which means they must get rid of the current species of grass. Some holes have up to 3 different types. Bermuda will fill in the fairways and create better course conditions, and a better playing experience. We will be at optimal shape by May/June. Course is still healing form aeration, and because of the rain we couldn’t complete all the work the first week of April. Unfortunately, the day you came out to play was a make up day for aeration, this caused a delay in pace of play. We hope you give us another try, thank you for your feedback.
Good for early in the season
Course was still wet from recent rains (not the course's fault) and the grass really hasn't started growing in the fairways yet. Had to roll the ball to get a decent lie but not a big deal. Seems like the greens had been punched and sanded within the last couple of weeks. Despite that, they rolled true and were pretty fast. In a few more weeks, the greens should be in great shape. Pace of play was excellent despite a Sat 8:10 tee time.

Hi abbaker, that’s wonderful to hear. Thanks so much for leaving us a review. See you soon!
Good Course, Meniacal Greens
We played and teed off on Sunday at 11am and I cannot complement the pace of play highly enough. Got around a full 18 in JUST over 4 hours, which in my opinion is phenomenal for a public course at the beginning of the season.
It was a fairly interesting course, with some holes which opened up around a dogleg to be completely different than you saw on the tee, which is very fun. The greens were almost unplayably fast, given how tilted they are on the whole. They're punching next week based on what I saw, so heads up :)

Hi u314159820772, thank you so much for the review. Have a great day!
Mostly as Expected
I wanted to get in one more round here before they aerate the greens the first week of April. I was disappointed to see the white tee-box on #12 were up-front again versus last week when they were at the old tee-box further back, which makes the hole interesting and challenging, versus a 280 yard par 4 'nothing hole' (on a course who's selling point is that it's challenging). The nicely-raked wet sand (after 2 days of rain) in the back-left bunker on the par 3 # 11 turned-out to be only 1/4 inch deep, which hid a solid bed of large (golfball-sized and larger) rocks, one of which left a gouge in the leading-edge of my new Cleveland Zipcore sand wedge.

Thanks for the great review. We will share this with the team!
First Time This Year
A dry, mostly sunny day in the low 70s in mid-March was enough to break-out the golf shorts for my first visit in 2022 to my most-played course. Course conditions were very nice, despite technically still being Winter, the greens were great (they will aerate them the first week of April). I'm going back tomorrow (3/25).

Thanks for the rating. We’d love to know what made your experience great!
Greens aerated 2 weeks ago so little bumpy and sandy. Otherwise conditions were fine. Pace of play was good and friendly staff. Coarse layout can make for a lot of lost balls even on solid shots, can be a bit frustrating.
Fun layout ruined by top dressing.
Look, I get it. Top-dressing greens is essential for their long term health. But before spending almost 70 dollars a warning that the greens were covered in sand would have been appreciated.
One of my favorite local courses
Great course that I play many times each year. This regional park golf course will challenge your skills as there are a lot of forced carries. There are several intimidating pin placements and a lot of decision making to be had. Having said that there are several chances for birdies. It's a course you have to play a few times to appreciate.

Thanks so much for the kind words, david1lapierre. We look forward to serving you again soon!

Really appreciate the rating. We’d love to learn more about what we did to earn it!
