About
Laurel Hill Golf Club has some of the best conditions of any public course in the area, which is why it is popular amongst the locals. It is hard to believe that the club sits where the DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton used to be located. The layout has a traditional design, but unlike older golf courses it runs a lengthy 7,102 yards from the back tees. The greens are lightning fast and undulating. There is defined contouring throughout the course, which allows for some interesting holes. Although the fairways are wide open they are still punishing towards errant shots. There are dramatic elevation changes throughout the golf course, making a flat lie nearly impossible to find. The course provides a formidable test for even the most seasoned players.

Golfer Reviews
Great track
Challenging if you’re not in the short stuff. Loved the elevations and the greens rolled great. Would play again for sure.
Solid Course
Course conditions were great. A few holes had divot issues in the fairway.

Laurel Hill Golf Club – Lorton, Virginia
Laurel Hill is an excellent public course and, in my opinion, easily among the top five public courses within about 45 minutes of Washington, D.C.
As roughly a 10-handicapper, I played from the white tees and found them plenty challenging. I particularly liked the overall length and layout. It is wide enough to be enjoyable and fair, but there are still plenty of penalizing situations for poorly struck or misplaced shots. Good shots are rewarded, while misses can definitely cost you.
One of the things that truly elevates Laurel Hill is the setting. Despite being in densely populated Northern Virginia, there are remarkably few residential views. For much of the round, you feel as though you are playing in a much more rural part of Virginia. Only a handful of holes offer glimpses of nearby homes, and even those are fairly subtle. That sense of openness and isolation gives the course a character that is increasingly difficult to find this close to Washington.
The remnants and references to the property's history as the former Lorton prison are another interesting feature. Historical elements are incorporated throughout the course and provide an intriguing connection to the property's past without detracting from the golf experience.
The course was in very good condition when we played during the second week of August. The greens were excellent and consistent, although quite slow.
My one criticism is that I would have appreciated more visible yardage references throughout the course. Golfers will want to have a good handle on their yardages or carry a modern rangefinder.
For the quality of the course and its proximity to Washington, I thought Laurel Hill represented excellent value. I would personally rank it ahead of Westfields and put it in roughly the same category as Bull Run for overall value.
Overall, Laurel Hill offers a terrific combination of challenging golf, excellent conditions, a surprisingly secluded setting, and some fascinating local history. A very good course and one I would definitely play again.
Review of Laurel Hill
Nice facility but you can’t drive your cart to the practice tee.
I couldn’t reach some of the holes in regulation.
The course was well maintained.
Overall experience was very good.
Great layout
Laurel Hill is a top notch golf course. From layout to conditions, staff etc., I can’t find any area to criticize; well except the hard packed sand in the bunkers. I’m guessing the recent rains caused that, and it gave me fits. A great day on the golf course, and kudos to the staff. Thanks for a fantastic golf experience.
Challenging test of golf
If you are new to golf, this is not your course. If you want to challenge yourself, play any tee box and enjoy the ride. Course in great condition.
New to the area looking for a regular course to play so it is my first time there clubhouse staff was super friendly. Course was in great shape no piece of play issues at all. Can’t wait for my next round there.
Great course!
Had a great time at Laurel Hill. Weather made it a really slow round as they blew the horn multiple times. Course was in great shape and had a great time overall.
