The Gauntlet is situated along the banks of the lake that is the centerpiece of Curtis Memorial Park. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the "top ten new courses to play in the U.S." This challenging layout will definitely test your shot making abilities. The golf course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses. There are also a slew of blind shots. The back nine is a bit gentler since there's less water and it is more open and forgiving, but the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The fourth hole is the golf course's signature. Your tee shot will have to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5. After that, you'll be faced with a triple-tiered green with the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.

Wonderful Experience

I play this course quite frequently and I have seen it change over the course of the past 10 years. It has never looked as good as it does not. The layout is challenging but the course has evolved to fit every level of player. I would highly recommend this course to anyone in the area looking for a fun time on the golf course!

This is one of the best courses I have been to.

I absolutely loved playing this course. It was so great that I played through rain and not so pleasant weather from the 5th hole on. I had a great time and a pleasant, yet challenging experience. It was wonderful!

Good value

Played this course Father's Day and it was pretty busy. Pace of play was slow, but that was expected. Course was fairly well maintained, solid greens, thick rough, and lush fairways. Some irrigation lines under ground cause some low gullys in a few fairways but no big complaints. Staff was friendly and helpful. Challenging but not overly difficult course, lead to an enjoyable round.

Fun track

Prepare to have some interesting lies, but this course is a lot of fun. Nearly every hole has some combination of water, uphill or downhill approach shots and tee boxes, and big undulating greens. Personally, I love courses like that, but if you're used to playing down and back, flat golf you'll hate this place. It's a great, challenging track. Bring plenty of balls.

Challenging

I have played the toughest courses in the tri-state area and this little course will test you on every hole.. I love the challenge every time I go out. The people are great and the head pro Mike Byrd is one of the nicest golf pro's you will ever meet. He has been there many many years unlike other golf pro's who bounce around from course to course. He is a great teacher and easy to talk to. Mr. Byrd keeps the course in good condition all year round . Go see for yourself..

this course has challenging but playable holes.

The set up of the course was well laid out, with narrow fairways and rolling greens.

First time at Gauntlet

Course was dry, so fairways and greens were hard and fast. I good condition for this time of year.
Took Mom out for first time, se we were very slow. but did not get any hassles about our pace of play. allowed others to play thorough etc, everyone was friendly.

OK Course & Overpriced

Great location and a unique layout but the course conditions, especially the greens were terrible for what the course is charging. The driving range had very little grass, causing you to warm up in dirt divots. The staff was very friendly and the cart food and beverage prices were very good. Although the staff and food and beverage rated high in my regard, not enough to bring me back to a course that could be something special if only the course conditions were a priority.

Challenging layout, but poorly maintained

What a disappointment. There is no doubt this course has a challenging layout with plenty of blind tee shots, tight fairways and undulating greens. The real "challenge" however, rested in an over abundance of fall leaves in the short grass surrounding the fairways and greens. The rough was so thick and littered with leaves that a shot just off the green on a par three results in a lost ball.

The clubhouse staff was very accommodating to my early arrival and the carts were juiced. Although the value through Golf Now was good, I still spent more on lost balls than on the actual greens fees. This track has potential, but for now, bring a VERY straight drive and LOTS of balls.

Worth the Hike

Coming down to The Gauntlet from Woodbridge is a decent drive, but I can't imagine driving all the way down from anywhere north of Springfield. With that said, it was a great day of Fall Golf once we adjusted to the conditions: windy, ground that's typically hard as a rock, and leaves everywhere off the fairway (and sometimes in the fairway). It's the time of year when if you're not hitting the ball in/near every fairway you're going to spend/waste a lot of your time looking for shots. There were even a couple drives I lost after hitting a drive down the middle of the fairway because I didn't know the undulations of the course and where the ball might end up.

However, the course was in very good condition, all things considered. The greens were still green and the fairways weren't too beat up. I guess the course didn't expect many more days for play as the greens were still showing the effects of having been aerated a couple weeks ago (they also heal slower this time of year). As for the layout, we played from the tips and it was sufficiently challenging with a great variety of holes. It's the type of course where you don't feel like you're playing the same few holes over and over. However, if there is a theme to the course it's target golf. Dye forces you to think on each tee box and often times urges you to keep the driver in the bag to have the best chance of being in the right place for your approach shot. On this day it was playing more more like a links style in that you could land the ball short of the green and let the natural undulations take the ball up to the hole. The green were rolling pretty good outside the aeration, but rarely did we feel like we were super confident in the lines we were picking to hole any putts outside 10ft.

Nice course, but doubtful I'd drive all the way down here again if I lived up in FFX or Loudon County.

very challenging

Must study the course and strategies your game. There were too many leaves to find a ball that I hit well on the fairways.

Very interesting and challening course but playable

Overall, enjoyed the course. Variation on each hole was challenging and kept your interest. The diagrams at each tee box were useful in planning your approach as there are several holes where you have to position your landing and follow-up shot.

A drawback on the outing was that our cart began to die on hole 12. We were not able to reach anyone at the pro shop to come and help. On hole 15 the cart died and we unloaded our bags to begin to walk. Only out of happenstance did someone from the course come by and relinquish their cart to us to use. They apologized but not being able to reach the pro shop should not happen.

Nice layout, just OK condition

The course is a city run course and it shows. Greens still showing aeration scars. Some dead grass areas on and around the greens. Fairways grass is now dormant for the winter. Spent a lot of time looking for balls in the leaves on the edge of the fairways. OK for a cheap rate, $30 or less. But don't expect too much.

Difficult course

The greens needed work, but overall the course was well kept. My family thought it was too difficult a course, but I found it challenging and enjoyed myself. Great experience. Thanks!
