Enjoyable Round/Must Play
This course is a “must play” if you’re in the area. Caught a quick 18 holes on my way back home from the OBX. A classic and traditional layout featuring huge old oaks, well positioned bunkers and generous putting greens. In fact, the drive to the clubhouse is through a grove of giant magnolia trees. Conditions were very good considering the area had 2-3 inches of rain in the last couple of days, but it was not cartpath only, but 90degrees and the staff said to use your best judgement to stay out of the wetspots. Hole #6 is one that you’ll need to scout out before teeing off, and hole #18 is a strong finishing hole. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I’ll be bringing my group back here to play this gem!
Need to have marshall assistance on the course
We were paired up with a young couple where it was the first time that the female was playing golf. Her boyfriend was giving her instructions on every shot and caused a significant backlog on holes. This should not be allowed especially on a early Saturday afternoon when the course is extremely busy. If a marshall had been around, he would have seen the condition that this was causing. I am not one to criticize someone but instructions are meant to be done on a driving or training range and not on a course during play.
Pleasant day
Golf course was good condition love the views play was 4 hours slow on back nine
Tough conditions but fun
We played after a few days of rain. Course was very wet. Had fun playing. Great pace. Staff was easy to deal with. Will play again under better conditions. Price is a bit steep for the quality, but no major complaint.
Always a Challenge!!
Sleepy Hole is one of the toughest places I've played in the area. Lots of hazards! Distance control is paramount here. Still love playing here even though my scores are 10 strokes higher than most other local courses.
Looking better!
I played earlier this year and it was all dormant. Now everything is green and looking much better. Staff was friendly and place was packed. Was paired with 3 guys and enjoyed it! The course was in very good shape and the greens were fast. I'm glad I didn't give up on this course after my first time there and I will be playing here again soon!
If only they had maintenance money
I'm a sucker for old school parkland layouts like Sleepy Hole. The course is never in great shape, but something about it has just always appealed to me. It probably helps that it's so cheap, the pace is play is usually really good, and the 18th hole is one of the best holes in Hampton Roads (even if losing the huge tree on the left side has taken some of the fun out of it). From the tips, especially the back nine, the course is a brute. But it also is extremely straight forward and fair. If Sleepy Hole could be as well maintained as somewhere like Riverfront, it would be a gem. Restoring parts of the old Obici House was a good start. I wish they could have another capital campaign to build an outdoor area to take better advantage of the river views post round, and then throw some dollars at fixing their bunkers. Still, it's a good throw back design that provides a very good test at extremely reasonable prices.
Challenging course and good value
Very nice course layout. Staff was friendly and helpful. Nice club house.
Great day for golf
60's, some sun, moderate wind, no excuses! Greens were a little quick, and are sorta on the small side.Had a great lunch, and staff was very friendly. Even though there were a lot of golfers out, the pace was good.
Be back in the Spring
Played course today. It wasn’t in bad shape and I’m sure it will look better in the spring. Fairways were brown, greens were in pretty good shape. Rough was cut low and nice. Course layout was super nice! Like I said, I’d like to see it in the spring when it’s all green. Staff was fantastic! Will come back in the Spring!
Sleepy Hole Review
Played the course for the first time in February. Thought the course was in great shape for the winter months. Greens ran true and very little standing water just 3 days after heavy rains. Definitely worth the money and would play it again.
Nice course in a great spot
Always a fun and challenging place to play. Will continue to pray a little extra to play here.
Aesthetically Pleasing Challenging Course
This is one of the most beautiful courses in the area and is quite a challenge. I will definitely be back here once my game is a little more solid. I think I lost four balls on my round of 99 strokes. it is one of the few courses in the area that give you a book with each hole's layout. that definitely helps the first time you're playing a course and need to know your landing areas and where the hazards are.
Beautiful course!
The greens were aerated a week ago, that aside I thoroughly enjoyed the round and look forward to returning when the weather is better (46 and overcast when I played)
Great course
Fun design that was in great shape. Love the finishing hole.
Great Course
I’ve played this course a few times and it is quickly becoming my favorite in the area. It’s a course that looks easy but can challenge you if you hit a poor shot. The staff are great and the course is kept in outstanding shape.
