Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

The greens
The greens are a mess. The rest of the course and lay out are one of the best public courses for the money.
Sub Par
Crashed 4 lane 5-6 times. Greens in horrible shape. I’d wait till they work on it before playing, directions to holes we’re missing or not there
Avg course
Course was in poor condition; greens has fungus spots; hadn’t bee mowed in several days. Enormous water hazards in middle of fairways on par 5’s requiring long iron to stay short and then a wedge followed by another long iron???
I was in town for a few weeks; I’ll play elsewhere
Fun layout, needs work
I’ve played here multiple times this year, and now will not return and it’s a shame because there are a lot of fun holes on the course.
The greens hadn’t been mowed in probably a week and very, very bumpy.
There is no difference between fairway and rough, but it’s more like rough the whole way, if there is grass.
Great course to take someone to learn how to play the game, but unfortunately that’s about it.
*sigh - just an overall disappointment
First off, the new hole layout is a monstrosity. The original hole one was an approachable par four with a wide fairway and putting green before the tee box… now it’s two weird par 4s before a hallway of a par 5 with terrible homeowners waiting for you to make a less than perfect swing.
The greens and fairways are in decent shape, but the biggest complaint is the oblivious young staff on the course DURING play. On more than one occasion, my friends and I experienced high school age kids watering the greens in the middle of the day and then just haphazardly driving their greenskeeper carts throughout the course, parking in spots that would sure be hittable, causing us to throw our hands in the air in confusion.
Long story short do not play here unless you can find a dirt cheap deal and hopefully no one on the course.
Come back course of the year!
Haven’t played this course in a few years due to the course conditions. Mix up with the chemicals I heard. Greens were unplayable on most holes.
Currently, greens are in great shape considering where they were. Tee boxes are clean and thick on par 3’s. Staff is beyond friendly and accommodating. Course is tight and will make you plan for your next shot. Miss the fairway and you’re dropping. But it makes up for it being a little short.
Carts are still a little weathered but they put covers over the seats that are a little rough. And “the turn” is inconveniently placed. It’s after hole 7 or 8. Not a big deal.
It’s no big club establishment, but it’s worth giving them another shot if you’ve passed on them over the last two years. And for $25-40 a round depending on what deal you score, it’s WORTH it. Also on a weekday, there was maybe 20 people playing.
Course is in good condition overall and is often an overlooked one. Never busy and always worth the price! Will be coming back
Improved greens
Stopped playing here last year when the condition of the greens became horrible. The greens are now in pretty good shape although there is still one temporary green. This course is challenging - lots of water requiring accurate layups. I’m not sure why the holes have been renumbered as neither Hole 9 nor Hole 18 put you at the clubhouse. Not a fan of back to back par 5’s early in the round on Holes 3 & 4. Nonetheless I’ll be back.
Getting better
Ever since I started playing golf in the Hampton roads area, I had hear horror stories of Chesapeake GC. I’ve played it 3 times this year and it is one of my favorite affordable courses when I want to get out on short notice.
You can tell the team is putting in the effort to make the course better, and the layout is fun.
Come along ways.
This course was in terrible shape several years ago. They have done allot of work and it is improving !¡ one green is out of play due renovation but looks like it's almost ready! great value for the money
But wait….
I gave rate of play a 3, not because we were being held up by other golfers, but because of trying to find the balls. The rough (and some fairways) are quite shaggy and the leaves are everywhere and in some places, very thick. I play at another course that is built around housing and has just as many trees. There, daily, they run big blowers and run them everyday to keep the fairways clear.
There is one very bad green that looks like it has a fungus. Bad enough that our foursome agreed when we got on it that we wouldn’t count any more than 1 putt.
And then there’s the golfers. EVERY green was riddled with ball marks!! Every green (except the the one with the fungus) I fixed no less than 3 ball marks aside from mine. Never hit a bunker so I can’t remark on them. Nicely designed water holes.
The carts are gas and a bit long in the tooth. Many with tears in the seats and bald tires. They are gas carts.
On a positive note, the staff is very friendly and the cost of a round is very reasonable.
