Kempsville Greens Golf Course

Great course but they are redoing all their greens. Don't know why during main golf season but other then that it was great to play. Can't wait till they are done.

I booked a tee time online for rather cheap for 18 for 2 people on a Wednesday morning. I was excited and have heard good things about this course. When I check in, they inform us they have temporary greens. Little did I know, this was a fairway green with a flag and a bucket as the hole. Additionally, many of the tee boxes were mats.

I wish this information was available before I paid.

Additionally, when I went up to the first tee, there was a starter on a slow Wednesday morning. He tries to pair us with a random duo even though there was absolutely nobody on the course. The two random guys laughed and just said they’d tee off ahead and we can play seperate. The starter goes after those dudes and makes them wait on the green for us. Screams at all of us and makes us really uncomfortable. He then follows us as we play to the second hole to make sure we play together. In the time it took doing this, they could’ve played ahead and we could’ve played the hole. And guess what?! Nobody was behind us, so it didn’t matter either way.

My buddy and I left after 9 holes and drove over to eagle haven to play another 9. Worst course ever, worse starter ever. I doubt I’ll come back despite my friends claiming they loved this course.

Well the course is being improved it is very playable especially for inexperienced players. We were behind a foursome that was obviously learning the game. We all go through that and we thoroughly enjoyed our time on the course. The staff is exceptionally pleasant.

Right now they have reduced pricing because they have temporary greens on every hole except 17. The greens are 50-75 yards in front of the real greens (sometimes farther) on the fairway. The grass is cut short and the hole used is about 8” diameter. If you don’t take your game too seriously then it’s a good chance to get a low score, with the length greatly reduced and the holes so large. It only took me about 2-3/4 hours to play. Some of the tees also need work but hopefully when everything is finished it will be much improved (and more expensive). I was satisfied since I play only occasionally. There was not room on the 17th hole to put a temporary green so that hole was skipped, improving my score three or more shots. 😊

All the greens Atleast front 9 is temporary but still fun excited to see when they’re done !

Instead of maintaining bunkers, they have eliminated many of them, taking away from the challenge. Sand traps are in need of overhaul and some more sand. Rarely do you see sprinklers or watering done. Tee boxes get rotated but the idle tee boxes never get any seeding or fertilizing. Membership is what keeps me coming back. Great bunch of guys and staff. Driving range is restricted to irons only. Pro shop pricing is a bit on the high side. Never have I seen a beverage cart on the course. One could be a real money maker and a young adult could make a great amount of money in tips.

Great staff and good pro shop. Bathrooms well kept. Carts are in great shape and run fast.

Course was under construction which I didn't know until I got there. Note on booking didn't give details about situation. All greens were blocked off and moved forward onto the fairways. Some made the distance 60 to 80 yds shorter. More work is needed besides the greens. The tee boxes were hard as a rock and many were 50 % or more bare dirt. The geese are a problem and dominate the tee boxes and the greens alo g with leaving their poop where you have to walk. Numerous cigarette butts on tee boxes as well as broken tees.

Many of the fairways were dried up and contained deep holes and bare dirt sections. I have played this course in years past and it was much better. I guess the greens work is being done so let the rest "go to pot" is the thinking. It seems you could work on front 9 then the back 9 after completing. Worker there said if we do all 18 greens it takes 6 weeks. If we do 9 then 9 it would take 10 years. That makes no sense. Not even a funny thing to say.

Also huge trees cut and laying around all over the course. Unsafe areas. Why not cut and clean up each tree. Oh, I got it, it would take 10 years.

No info about course renovations when booked tee time. Got there at 7 am and told me about renovations. Greens being redone, temporary greens, mats for tee shots on all par 3’s, extra large cups to putt too. Course with temp greens probably played 3,000 yards. One hole had no temp green, water all around the green. Had a little boat anchored in the water with a flag in it???? To show you have easy it was, I shoot in the upper 80’s. Had 3 eagles and shot a 67. Hopefully after renovations it will be worth playing, now NOT SO MUCH?

I wonder what happened! All the greens are in need of repair and it's evident that temperary greens are being developed for most of the 18 holes. So if you want to work on putting stick to the putting greens. I met some really nice golfers that play there often but they indicated it was their last time until next year. The course overall is a challenging experience but the condition of the grounds makes it impossible to have a true golf experience. Artificial turf driving mats as tee box; Brown, worn and blistered greens leave alot to be desired!

NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!! Green are absolute trash. Pace of play is horrendous took almost 3 hours to play the front 9. Marshall……what Marshall to be honest. Last time I will ever play this course
