18th Tee Photo submitted by CharlieinPA on 02/27/2017
Nice round.
They have three courses, and I played the Blackheath course. The staff all the way from the check-in to the starter were all very accommodating. I was scheduled to play one of the other courses, but the starter directed me to the less crowded one since I was playing by myself. Not knowing the course can get you into some trouble with club selection, but a nice couple who knew the course well let me join them. I enjoyed playing here, and look to play it again!
Williamsburg trip
This was a great time and Ford Colony has 3 full 18 hole courses. LOVED IT
Hot deals
I paid 35 on hot deals, the course was great shape. You better have laser Finder, because some greens are30 to 40 long. You could be off two clubs in hitting close to pin.l don't think I would pay the 89 the normal greens.
Ford's Colony Blue Herron
Had a great time playing Blue Herron. The greens were in great shape. Very smooth with moderate speed. The Bermuda fairways are just starting to grow in; so some spots were excellent and others...not so good. The Fairways were moist; so there was not a lot of roll. I would definitely play this course again.
Ford colony golf
Course in decent shape considering time of year. Course is challenging but very forgiving at same time.
Great enviornment
Fords Colony is a comfortable and welcoming enviornment for golfers . Played three times now and definitely worth the drive from Richmond . Course layouts , amenities and most of all the people make this a must stop on golfers bucket list . Greens are coming around but still need a little work , other than that can't wait to come back in a few weeks . Only wish is one day to play Blackheath without it being windy, but wind or not will be back .
Beautiful layout without unfair penalties
Although there is an abundance of water around the course the water is more of a view than a penalty. I will definately come back to play again.
Poor greens
greens were poor just like we were told. they plan to rebuild the greens this summer.
Winter Bermuda
The course was great, except the grass was dormant and all brown. The starter said the greens were bad, but my wife and I thought they were decent considering it's March.
Deceptive. Not as open as it looks
Great demanding course. Plenty of water and deep fairway bunkers narrow your landing areas. Changes in elevation. Lots of holes require a carry unto the green or off the tee. Greens have subtle breaks but need to be maintained a little better.(keeping from rating a 5).
Golf in march baets shoveling snow
Course fairways where dormant but very playable greens could have been in better shape lots of bald spots which meant little craters on the way to the hole but its march could be a winter thing
Great course
After reading all the reviews about this course , my friends and I decided to give it a try . We were not disappointed . Great course layout . For this time of the year , the fairways are dormant ......course and greens are in great shape . Greens are ridiculously fast , . The staff was very friendly and professional . Forgot the name of the starter .....he was super nice , gave us some tips on the course since we were first timers . I would definitely be back to play Fords Colony again . By the way , we played Blue Heron .
Good value but
Played Blue Heron, one of 3 courses at this facility. Not the best conditions even adjusting for time of year. Probably gets a ton of play with golfers not fixing divots. Houses throughout. Not that difficult. Might give it another shot but only during in season, maybe the grass would grow back in.
Blackheath
Couldn't wait to come back after playing Blue Heron couple weeks ago. Again staff was great, except for starter explaining yardage to water and as a result , yep , Kerplunk. Really did give us some good tips and staff does seem to enjoy their work. I'm undecided which course I prefer. Blue Heron I played great and Blackheath brought us back to reality , but the wind made club selection tough. We played one hole I swear wind was at our back on the tee and in our face on approach and it was blowing pretty good. This makes for some indecision on shot selection and as a result not as committed in swing. Blackheath does have a lot more water, but a lot of it easy to avoid and plenty of bailout areas if needed. Greens are fast , challenging and very consistent . Pin placement easier on Blackheath this day and did enjoy the creative nature of the course. Tees and fairways dormant, but greens and traps very good condition. Watch out for fairway bunkers , some play like green side bunker. Plenty of sand and well kept and raked. Looks like clientele helps with repairing marks and raking traps. Great facility , staff and will be back soon. Only con is fairways lined by beautiful homes and wish there was some more common ground between homes and course. Feel like playing in someone's backyard at times. Staff friendly , great facility and interesting layouts, all in all makes for great day. Can't wait to play this spring once the fairways are green and the flowers are blooming. Oh, pace of play was great. Have played here twice with plenty of golfers out, but they all have seemed to know proper etiquette and how to keep up the pace. Caught up to a threesome didn't know was in front of us, but as soon as they saw us they moved right along and never was a pace issue. Played 18 in 3 1/2 hours on a beautiful 70 degree afternoon. Thanks to the staff and the other golfers for another great day.
Blackheath
My wife and I played this course yesterday afternoon. It was a cold sunny day so the course was not in optimal condition but well maintained for the time of year. The clubhouse staff and cart staff was friendly. We were relegated to the far parking lot as non members but I can understand this policy. We were sent by the cart staff to the first tee at Blackheath and were immediately behind two groups of 4-5 people who were part of a tournament. They were largely novice golfers who took a very long time to complete each hole. In fact one hole literally took 30 minutes to complete. The first 9 took a little over 3 hrs. Luckily when starting on the final 9 the tournament was complete and we finished the back in under 1.5 hrs (literally at sunset). The cart was sub par (unlike my score). I had to keep shifting it from forward to reverse to get the gas engine to engage at which time it would backfire and spew exhaust. We kept thinking we were going to get stranded. The course was lined by beautiful expensive homes and was a pleasure to play. Overall a great day!
Beautiful course, friendly staff
Played Marsh Hawk Course. Very scenic layout. It can be challenging if you don't consistently hit straight, but lots of fun if you can. :-)
The staff was very friendly, especially the bag/cart guys took care of me. I will definitely be back again later this summer.
