Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Qwiked at WF
Excellent day with my son, course is challenging but not too difficult for 15 HC.
Super Professional Staff
Would definitely recommend this course. One of the best in Washington.
Same Ol
The course itself has a lot of moss on the greens, some anyways, and some pretty soggy spots. The biggest issue with this course is they do not accountable for the tee times. I booked an 11:34 on GN which had one other player booked. I got there at 11:10 and was told that player had already left and I could go whenever. So being left as a single I ended up following a twosome that was behind a threesome. Fortunately the threesome only played 9 holes and they were not too busy. But it's these tactics that result in long rounds when they are busy and it's unacceptable. People should have to play at the time they are scheduled, period.
Outside of security entering the main gate, the course is an excellent place to paly. It does not have a good practice driving range.
Practice area is limited. Excellent course for the money.
A glorious 3 and 1/2 hour round!
A great golfing experience. The only drawbacks I noticed were several dead spots on the fairways and some weird fungal growth on some of the greens. Other than that, this course it a winnah!
Nice course!
First time playing but I liked the challenging layout and most of the course was in better than average shape compared to others in the area. KILLER hot deal on GolfNow!
This is a military course so not very crowded (at least on this Friday or other weekdays I suspect) so we never waited nor pushed really. REMINDER, because it is a military base, if you don't have a military ID of some sort, it is a bit of a pain to get on base. You either have to have the advanced Drivers License, or bring your passport! The driver must show current insurance card and registration. While you wait they actually do a brief background check so plan on a minimum of 15 min at the gate and probably much more on the weekend (see other reviews).
This is a very walk-able course
Even though the day we golfed was very warm, the course is still a good course to walk. The course was challenging but fair. All of the trees provide great shade, but beware of all of the ant hills!
Nice course, worth the trip
Very nice course. Challenging long par fours, nicely wooded, well maintained. Very much worth having to stop and get a visitors pass to get on base. Played here several times and the wait to get a pass has never been more than 20 minutes.
This course was nice, but to get in there wasn't great
We spent an hour to get a visitor badge(pass) since the course is in the military base. It was a nice course to play. However, I would not play there anymore because of all the hassle.
Cruisin'
I got a great Sunday deal on GolfNow for myself and my son. We had an 11:34 tee time, but when we got there it was wide open, so they let us go off at 11. We cruised around in a little over 3 hours and as we left the 18th green, it started to pour rain. Despite being a little damp, the greens and fairways were firm. Great value here.
Whispering Firs August 1st 4 under par...
My first time playing this course. With it being on base, I wondered what it would be like... I was very pleasantly surprised.
The Tees were emaculate. It was a pleasure arriving at every Tee.
The fairways, also emaculate and with clear views of hazards in case you didn't drive well. The rough was rough IF you drive a shot into it. The trees that lined the fairways were merciful to a degree. there were some areas that needed work, but for the most part were in great shape.
The greens were clearly under repairs and marked as such, but the good areas of the greens were in great and more importantly in consistent condition.
Shot difficulties were over water hazards, over tall brush, and around strong dog legs for accuracy.
The course would be a favorable walk for those on foot for sure. Mostly flat with slight upgrades and downgrades here and there.
My round resulted in a 4 under par scratch. Unreal considering this was my 21st game of golf. But everything I did, seemed to work in this round. It was an experience that I won't ever forget and I loved the course.
The experience was truly great. The course I am giving a rating of "excellent' to because it's really in greate shape.
I will absolutely play there again first chance I get.
I still can't believe I shot a 68. Even my (usually TOPPING) 3-wood attempts worked. I hit onto the green from way out giving me tow chances at Eagle putts... neither of which I made. Darn it. But it was hugely exciting to have the chance let alone two.
Also I want to commend the golfers ahead of me, I only had to repair like... 12 ball marks on the greens for the hole round and I found only two cigarette butts on the greens. Yay!!!
Good job Gentlemen! Let's keep on keeping it clean and tidy for each other.
Next round (#22) tomorrow at Riverbend. Still trying to figure out this game.
*cheers* Always, N.I.S--> Nicholas in Seattle
Best value
Super awesome course... Great value.
best for what I paid.
pace of play very well, good condition, love to go back again agaain
Access into Base & Ants
Please change the info regarding what is required to be allowed to the course from the McCord Airforce Base. You required two pieces of PICTURE ID. Not just two pieces of ID. Plus they have to be approved by the McCord. Passport and License are acceptable.
Played the course on Monday, June 20, 2016. Great course buy they have a very bad Ant problem on the fairways, rough and greens. I asked if they were going to spray and they said they couldn't. It is very distracting when you are trying to hit your ball and ants are crawling around you, the ball and on the ball. Hopefully the ants will go away as the course is a great course.
Trees, trees, and more trees
If you like trees and narrow fairways, you'll love this course. They need some insect control to manage the ants that are everywhere on the greens. Course is otherwise in good shape.
Excellent price. Outstanding quality.
This is a challenging course. Low price. Not super busy. Worth the price!!
Fun course
Better make sure you get there early to get through the gate. Fun course with a unique layout. Lots of hard dog legs. Greens were slow and not very true but I'm sure that will shape up as we keep getting nicer weather. Some cool retired military guys hang around the course
Tougher then I remembered, but still a bargain
The Course was in pretty good shape on the Fairways. The Greens were still a bit bumpy, and the Ground Keeper needs to put some Sand in the Bunkers, seriously I think it was hard pan covered by a 1/2 inch of sand - very poor Bunkers. But we got an extremely good rate, which the guy behind the cash register kept reminding us - to the point of almost being offensive. Finally had to tell him we didn't set the prices but were just looking for a good bargain for a Sunday Round of Golf. The 19th Hole was pretty darn good afterwards, order the Burrito and steer clear of the Wraps. Beer was very good and cold, and a good selection of drafts.
One las thing to remember is that it is on a Military Base so you have to go through a background to get on; Drivers License, Registration, Proof of Insurance, and starting in May either an Enhanced Drivers License or Passport required.
