Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Good up and down
This course provides a decent level of play for all skill levels. It has some challenging par 3 holes with good hazards in play. The overall course design is pleasing and the conditions where good. I would go play this course again and would recommend it to all skill levels.
Fun day at the course
A fun day with friends at the course. Spring & winter rains have hurt this course. They are doing a good job of repairs to the greens. Water over the cart paths on a couple holes did not hinder play. Fairways in good shape. Good value for the price. Will play again.
Great for the money
Course was in great condition for the time of year, a little bit confusing on where to go with the flooded cart paths on 2 holes, but an awesome course to play, especially for the price, I look forward to playing here this summer!
Military Base Golf Course
Booked 3 player 18 rounds of golf.
First game of the year and first time at course.
Since it's military base you can't just walk in. It is open to the public. Read someone that it is not open for public, that guy is clueless.
Need to check in at vistors center before entering the military base. Needs (registration, insurance, I-D)
Direction is not clearly enough. Went to 2 wrong gates.
Just solid course. Lots of par 4's and 5's, full 18 holes.
Great course amazing staff
I have been playing this course for 5 years , the staff are just amazing and so friendly. I hardly ever have to wait and half the time I have the course to my self. I golf all over the south sound. But hands down my favorite place to play.
Value Met for Experience!
Impressed me for my first time playing here. Manicured fairways, challenging distances and obstacles, really had fun!
Scorecards could be updated to wax (currently just sliced photocopies that didn't hold up to rain).
Hard to get in (need a temp pass to get into the base) but the experience is worth the trip and low greens fees to come.
Good course at a great price
Course was well kept, grass was cut and greens free of debris for the most part. The course had a few challenging dog legs, but you could still shoot a low score. Come early due to security at the visitor center.
Great course
Great course, very slow play during to a scramble, a 5-some of walkers. Staff is friendly, condition of the course was very nice. Greens rolled smooth.
Lots of sharp doglegs!
Whispering Firs is a very nice course and a super great value with a GolfNow hot deal. The course was in good shape, especially considering the hot, dry summer we had. The course has a lot of sharp doglegs that require conservative play, because if you find yourself among those whispering firs, you'll probably pitch it out sideways, unless you get lucky. The design is why they got a 4 overall from me. Good news is that you'll probably find your ball--the grass is tamped down in the woods. The sand in the bunkers was exquisite. Greens had quite a bit of slope and good speed. Some signs of fungus on the greens--not a problem if the staff is forehanded about their care. Overall, a nice place to golf!
Don't Try To Play During a Tournament!
There were mostly pluses during my round: Pro shop guy Steve was competent and friendly; paired up with a really nice couple (Wayne and Lisa) who play there regularly, and added to my enjoyment; course was in really good shape; pace of play for the front nine was excellent!
The one con to yesterday's round was that there was a tournament going on. While Steve put us out on the back nine to start, when we made the turn the front nine was almost at a standstill. There were four foursomes stacked up at hole #2; I decided to cut my losses and call it a day. Since I got a great deal on green fees, I still ended up with a good value for 9 holes.
But the lesson learned is this: Be sure to call the pro shop for both Whispering Firs and Eagles Pride military golf courses to make sure there aren't any tournaments scheduled before booking your round.
JBLM
Getting on base is a bit of a pain. We got a super deal through Golfnow $15 including cart. We were early and were allowed to go off the back in order to beat a tourney starting off the front. As a twosome, we never caught up with anybody until 15 holes behind us. A nice speedy round.
Private Gem for DOD, Military and Retirees
I love getting out to Whispering Firs for a twilight round. Whether walking or riding, the late afternoon usually provides for a quick pace of play, little traffic and visits from deer. Though by late afternoon the course facilities are reduced - no/limited food/restaurant service - the staff is always friendly and accommodating. The facilities include driving, chipping and putting areas. The course presents a challenge, especially from the blue tips, with great driving holes on amble par fives, dogleg par fours and medium length par 3s. The course fairways and greens are in very good condition given it is a DOD course. I recommend it to everyone who has entitlements to go.
Lots of doglegs
Greens are nice looking and smooth, although a little slower than most. There are more doglegs than you normally see on a golf course. Most of them go left. Allow plenty of time to go through security because this is on an air force base.
You're in the Army now !
The worst part of Whispering Firs is getting through the JBLM security gate!
I had great difficulty understanding the gentleman processing my visitors pass's English, and for that he took exception, chastising me for being impatient. Thank goodness for his English proficient co-workers intervening when he mistakenly identified me as my 25 year old son and said I was not allowed to drive on base! The guard at the gate has an m-16 looking automatic weapon that was somewhat disconcerting but understandable.
Once we arrived we were treated to a great round of uncrowded golf, The fairway grass was still green and firm with the greens being lightening fast. We stopped for food at nine(3:15) and learned that they close at 4:30 and the only hot food they serve between 3:00 and 4:30 are hotdogs and after 4:30 you're out of luck !! We finished our front nine in 1:45
and the back nine in 2 hours.
Very nice course
Excellent course that has pretty good greens. The fairways were a little rough because of the dry summer but overall very well kept. Go play, you won't be disappointed.
Nice course layout
This was the first time my son and I played Whispering Fir and it won't be the last. There are a couple of water holes and two or three serious dog legs. I said the pace of play was average because we got stuck playing the back nine during a Men's Club event that takes place every Tuesday and Thursday, but was compensated by the course. I look forward to playing this course again. The course is on the McChord AFB side of what's now JBLM (Joint Base Lewis-McChord).
Good bang for your buck
We went on a Sunday and had no problems slotting into our tee time. Course is in good shape especially for the reasonable price it offers. We did get backed up however on the back nine probably because of newer military guys just learning to play golf on the course.
Firs Good
We were able to tee off a little before our time because the group in front of us played fast. We didn't see them until the back 9. The course was in good shape, except for the tee box on 1 par 3. We enjoyed the course.
Great course
Great round, it started with the friendly staff. The course was well kept specially the greens, challenging golf course with tight fairways. Overrall a great experience.
