Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Tight Fairways!!!! Photo submitted by stanfordbstallings on 04/03/2013
Smooth greens
Course in great shape, greens were soft and smooth.
Dogleg left course!
Work over the last couple of years starting to pay off. From new tee areas, tree cutting, to reworking a water sogged par 3 hole, the course is coming alive after years of status quo. Only complaint is the condition of the greens. Shaggy, could use some TLC to bring them into good playing condition. Camaloch greens would be good ones to copy. Good practice facilities and usually can find good deals on golfnow for a round any day of the week. Restaurant is excellent, just need to extend their hours.
fairways in great shape
Fairways solid with great firmness. Greens were slow. Needed to be mowed closer and holes looked like they haven't been moved for a week.
weather was great ... Felt like summer golf.
Bang for your Buck
Course is still wet and soggy in the shaded areas. Greens are in good condition, tee boxes and fairways not so much.
This course is under construction
Grass was not cut, greens were ok need attention. No second cut areas. Course needs TLC often not maintained . Could be a great course if better grass maintenance.
Slow senior play
I have played the course several times but I'm always Leary about late morning tee times because of slow play by elderly players. It was so bad I skipped9-10 just to get ahead of them. No Marshall keeping things moving otherwise nice challenging course and on good shape.
Not Too Shabby
Not a bad golf course if you live on base. Can't beat the hot deal price. Course plays well. Lots of bird feces due to the fearless geese and ducks. Overall a good experience. Definitely would recommend trying.
Military Base
My friend drove his wife's car. Didn't have an up to date insurance card for her car and was not allowed on the base. In Washington, if you have an insurance card, you are covered for all cards in you family. Apparently the Air Force doesn't care.
Will never go back
Long par fours!
Course has a bit narrower fairways and beautifully tree lined. It's under construction for hole 12. Long par fours that challenge on distance. Definitely playing again. Only bummer was food and bar were closed by four when we finished playing and we were looking forward to a margarita!
LOVE THE COURSE
Love playing here. Lots of diversity. A good workout walking the back nine. Can't wait to go back!
Good round, but slow pace of play
I played on Tuesday at 1200. The course was in great condition and the staff in the club house was very nice. The only problem was the pace of play was terribly slow. I am a relatively new golfer and am not all that fast myself. However, the round took 4 hours and 50 minutes to complete. There were multiple slow groups so it wasn't an issue of a group not letting us play through. I never saw anyone from the club house on the course trying to manage the pace issue. Since we were playing in the Winter, we had to play 18 nearly in the dark. When you tee off at noon, you really should be able to finish the round with an adequate amount of light.
Great course!
The course was in great shape. A little wet but it was because it had rained the day before. I'm going to go back. Be sure to enter the main McChord gate and give yourself plenty of time to get a pass. It was painless just took some time.
Good Golf course
Was not very happy because they charged me an extra $30.00. The guy at the pro shop said my $50 .00 I paid was for walking and on Golf Now it included the cart. They showed no tournaments on their web site and we got there and we were behind a tournament{4 ball scramble] Not that many groups but were very slow!!!!! Golf Now did not send me conformation to my partner at his e-mail address. Golf was good other than the long waiting on every hole!!
Really
Caught up to a threesome on the 3rd hole, after that it was wait, wait, wait. Seems they had never heard of allowing someone to play thru. It was late summer and obvious the fairways hadn't seen water in a while as the was more brown than green.
Disappointing
Very disappointing considering other Air Force courses I've played. Waited 10 minutes between shots while 2 some ahead was oblivious to us. Fairways looked like they hadn't been irrigated all year. Greens were just as bad. 5 + hrs to play under poor course conditions, not for me! Won't be back.
Course conditions not up to usual conditions.
Apparently, the grounds crew have not had the resources to maintain the fairways and greens. Hitting from dirt where there should be grass. Golfing buddy who has played this course for decades said she had never seen it so dry and the greens poorly maintained.
Enjoyable Round
Great greens. Many tight fairways. Better hit em straight. 20 handicap shot a 94. Trees cost me at least 5 strokes. Enjoyed it. Good value
Sunny day on the course
Weather was beautiful, my friend from Houston had a really good time, even though he struggled with his hitting.
Course is open enough to allow for a little spraying of the ball, yet tree-lined and quite pretty.
We paired-up with 2 others, I believe they had fun playing as well.
Great Value!
Very good rates which include cart and lunch! There was a marshall present to insure pace of play. I enjoyed the course and would recommend friends to play here.
