Timberlane Golf & Recreation
About
When Timberlane Golf & Recreation opened in 1959 as Timerlane Country Club, it was the first private golf club on the west bank of the Mississippi. The oaks planted at that time have beautifully matured, adding to both the scenery and difficulty of the golf course. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed the course, crafting a challenging test that has been ranked as one of the most difficult golf courses in the country. You'll have to contend with 80 strategically placed sand bunkers and 17 different water hazards. While the course is not overly punishing, you'll have to be prepared to have every aspect of your game tested. Before tackling Timberlane''s golf course you may find it helpful to warm up using the club's all-grass driving range and you can use the large putting green to practice with putting, chipping, and sand play.

A really great deal
I was the first one out Monday at noon, which is when the course opens on Mondays. I finished 18 holes in exactly two hours .
Decent course
Pretty good course, decently kept up. Fairways aren't too hard, but the greens are really difficult compared to the average, so If you want to test your putting ability try this one out.
Great Country Cub
Great layout and excellent greens. Great test of golf. Can be a great tournament golf course. Driving range needs a face lift but gets the job done. Small pro shop. Needs new pro shop. But go play it you will like golf course.
The Staff and Course are wonderful.
The Greens are in great shape as well as the fairways.
Bad day at Timberlane
The course needs a lot of work. Bunkers are terrible, tee boxes chewed and fairways spotty. Greens are decent.
Great Course and Great Value
Course is in remarkably good shape. Fairways are neat, first and second cuts of rough fair. Greens are excellent; well maintained and consistent. And, the sand traps have real sand. The only constructive comment I can make is to add a yardage "block" at a point on each tee box giving yardage to the center of the green. Yardage poles don't match the tee markers and it's hard to judge distances.
Timberlane
Overall the course is in very good shape. The greens are good, only a few spots that need help. Not bad considering how hot this summer was. I used a"hot deal" and only paid $25 on Labor day. The only problem was pace of play. There was no starter and no ranger on the course. This resulted in a single, double, double, and double ahead of us. Unfortunately, the double in front of us were new to golf and were extremely slow. The course needs to rectify this situation. Besides that, we had a great time. Timberlane really is a nice course.
Tough economy
This place is definitely feeling the effects of poor management, poor greens keeping, and mismanagement of their members funds. They mowed the tiff eagle greens too high, and then finished by cutting a circle around the green that was lower then the rest of the green, like an impromptu 2nd fringe? The asphalt fairway bunkers looked like they haven't been edged or raked since the last time I played there two years ago. It seemed the only holes that looked "groomed" were the ones near the clubhouse, for curbside appeal I guess. The men's locker room had more lockers then my college did, and can't understand how more money went into the locker room then course upkeep. The same can be said for the golf carts, they looked better then the course. The driving range was located near a busy roadway and the landing area for the range balls was like a hay field, I was waiting to see a wild pig run by. The ball was just consumed in the grass, much like the grass off the fairway. The course wasn't challenging in the design, but more finding a decent lie and a patch of fairway that wasn't all weeds or compacted dirt. If you can get at least 250 with your driver, you have a chance at birdie on every par 4 hole. The woman's tees were a mound of sand with two colored boxes indicating their spot. The water coolers looked like something from a horror movie, you had to stick your hand up a weathered piece of wood, and hope a spider didn't bite you, or you don't get pricked by a rusty nail, or get a splinter. And finally, for some reason, you have to add your own water to the ball washers as all of them were bone dry. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO TO A BETTER COURSE!!!!
Decent Course
The overall course was decent. Tight fairways lined with trees, greens were pretty good but very slow, some tee boxes were bad with overgrown grass. It was challenging if you didn't hit in the fairway. After the round, we went to grab a bite to eat and some beers from the club house but that was a hug mistake. The food was absolutely horrible and the waitress acted like she could care less that we didn't even touch the food and still had to pay for the garbage that was on our plate. Save your money and stomach on eating at the course because its bad. They need both a new cook and a new manger.
Horrible
First let me say that im from St. Louis area so while driving into the Country Club i had high expectaions for the course, because in STL some of our best public course have high end homes on them. Im a customed to playing on Zoysia Fairways but this is the worst course ive ever played. Dont even play the front 9 just go staright to the back 9 and play it twice lol.
Decent course
Challenging course with fair fairways and greens.
Polite staff and good amenities. I would definitely play here again.
I liked the course setup and enjoyed the challenge. Lots of water and sand on the course.
Timberland
This couse needs some work. Four tee boxes on the front 9 have been torn out for months now which means all tees are up at the same spot. Thr greens are pretty rough very sandy and bumpy. The course does have some challenging holes and a lot of trees that line most holes but other than that the course is pretty flat. Once the tee boxes and greens are back in shape the course will be a nice round of golf.
Great Value
Great value for this well designed challenging layout. The over all course was in fair condition for the winter season but the greens were excellent and rolled true. Very fair off the tee but the approach shots need to be accurate to hit the proper spot on the green if you want to score well. Really enjoyed this track.
Excellent Value
Overall course was in good winter condition. Greens were in excellent condition and rolled true. A great valued course. Well designed with lots of challenge if you want to score well. Fairly forgiving off the tee but approach shots need to be accurate to hit the proper green section.
Needs some work
Course could use some up keep trees trimmed, fairways watered and mowed better.. A bit of work on the greens.
Great shape but...
Overall, great shape and challenging, especially greens. Except...the fairways. Although hard, dry and thin grass which is understandable and acceptable but really too bumpy. They need to be leveled by top dressing or totally scraping and aerating. Riding cart on course is like riding a bronco. Then course would be totally fantastic. BTW, couldn't beat the $13 round on a beautiful day.
Great course, unfriendly staff
I play Timberlane about once per month. I always book the tee time online. I can honestly say the DMV has a friendlier process. I've never had issues at ANY OTHER golf course in America except Timberlane. Either the tee time booked was lost, someone else had the time, or basically just felt unwelcomed. During the last two visits, the name on my receipt didn't match the name on the starters sheet and was given a hard time. And then another time I was told the tee time I booked was taken and assigned a time ten minutes later. Guess what? There was no one on the course before us...or behind us. The course is wonderful, but the interaction with the staff makes me think twice about booking again.
Lots of fun for a lownprice
Low price on golfnow for a midweek midday round. Good condition, decently challenging.
very fair and challenging course
will definely come back. good course well kept. i good course for a middle handicap golfer as course is very challegeing but fair. i enjoyed very much
Locals course
Timberlane is a former private club which, like many others in the area, has felt the pinch of the economy and has opened its doors to the general public. Membership still has priority, but it's down now so there's a good balance in the play. The course is an old Robert Trent Jones Sr. design (1959), but it's wedged into neighborhoods, so it's really kind of tight in places. The front nine features a lot of parallel fairways, but they did make decent use of the available land. The back winds through the homes. The rough can get gnarly, especially when wet. The finishing hole is short, but requires a good approach to the right green level, or par isn't guaranteed.
The course is a favorite of locals because it's not usually very crowded and they run really good weekday specials. It's the only course in the area with a lighted driving range.
Beware as you go to the first tee... you go through a tunnel under a major roadway. There are some pipes running next to the roadway that you think you won't be able to go under - you can, but boy is is scary!
