A lot of potential, short in a couple areas
I have played this course 4 or 5 times in the last month. This golf course has a ton of potential. A highlight was the greens. Most of the time they are very well maintained and very fast. However, on busy days they can get a little rough with people not fixing their divots or fixing them improperly.
The bunkers are inconsistent. Some are pretty firm while others are a little softer. The fairways are decent for a California course. My biggest complain is the tee boxes. Very few of them are level. A tip I would have is to play the blues. It does not add a substantial amount of distance, and the tee box is in MUCH better shape compared to the whites.
The layout of the course is also odd. The course used to be named Meadow Lakes. At some point it was bought and renamed to boulder oaks and as part of that transition the layout was adjusted. I am not sure if some holes were added, removed, or changed, but you can tell that the course is different from how it was built. I will say, hole 6 has an absolutely incredible view. That is a gem of a tee shot.
The practice facility also needs some work. The mats were in ok condition, but the practice balls are absolute junk. I was hitting flush shots with my irons and woods, but only getting about 60% of the distance, and it felt like I was hitting rocks. Very harsh feedback.
The pace of play is typically good, however I played on a weekend and it was severely backed up. It took us almost 4 hours to get through 13 holes. We often had 2 groups behind us at the tee while we waited for the fairway/green to clear. We decided to skip the group in front of us on 14, they had fallen about 1/2 hole behind the group in front of them, were taking 2-3 shots from the tee, spending several minutes looking for lost balls, not playing ready golf. The group in front of them was a 3-some and were also playing VERY slowly. There was no one in front of them for holes 16-18. I was very disappointed in the lack of a ranger to manage pace.
The bar & grill is pleasantly good. There could be more selection of draft beer, but the food is decent and fairly priced. You can usually get a $10 deal for a burger w/ chips & a domestic beer. You can upgrade the beer for $2 and upgrade to fries for $1-2 more as well. While not "cheap", the price was pretty reasonable. The burger is decent and the fries are not bad.
All-in-all, if you can play this course for $25 or less I think you are getting a good value. If they cleaned up a few things (like the tee boxes), this could be a great course.
Worried about a dollar more than customer satisfaction...
I booked my round via Golfnow and apparently Matt at the pro shop took offense to me saving some money even though I chose his course to play at. I arrived early purchase a large bucket of range balls and completed practice and checked in with the starter who said he would start me and work me in as soon as he could. But... Matt called ahead and told him not to let us start until our tee time at 12:37. It was only about 11:15 and even though the number one tee was wide open and groups of two were starting Matt was still going to make us wait until our tee time over an hour away.
Pace of play
Pace of plkay was lousy today. I signed up for a full round and only got 13 holes in. I started at 1:45 and think I should have finished my round. There was a foursome in front of us that played the red, white, and blue tees. And apparently below average players that ruined our game. I would think that the club would monitor this better.
Best value for the money.
Lots of fun.. Have to be pretty accurate off the tee or bring lots of balls.
The greens and the fairways are all in pretty nice shape of course was enjoyable to play
Fun and Challenging Course!
We've played this course several times over the past 16 months. The renovations have established themselves and the adjustments to layout and hole pace have made this course easy to keep on time. The conditions are excellent for the current winter timeframe and the fairways and greens are in "summer"shape... Very much enjoy playing Boulder Oaks as it has quite a few challenging aspects and the greens can be tough, depending on where the greenskeeper has placed the cups...
lots of fun
course was muddy from recent rains, but overall it was in decent shape
greens were good
lots of short par 4s but still challenging
for the price it was a good deal
Good course for the price
This course is a decent course for the price, great for short hitters and beginner golfers. Having the 11th hold end at the clubhouse instead of the ninth is not the best, but the course does not have an option with there new course layout. Pace of play I consider poor for this short course as every time I play the course people are jumping holes instead of just playing the 18 like they are suppose to. There is no Marshal on the course to remedy that problem either. But that is the new age of golf. They are improving on other areas, like getting there driving range back. Now I just want to see a short game area instead of just a practice putting green. A short game practice area to me would bring a lot more business to this hidden course.
Nice course in good condition.
We have played here over the past few years and we constantly amazed at the improvements that keep happening. I noticed that the holes were switched a little and there was some new signage for Hole #12. The fairways were green and the greens were in really good shape. The views are fabulous. Love playing at this course.
Scenic but difficult
Overall a nice course for the price. Decent condition. Some hole have elevation with scenic views of the surrounding mountains. I will not be rushing back however. Course is narrow and very difficult. There is little to no forgiveness if shot is not in the fairway. A lot of the ‘rough’ is is actually drainage that baked hard from the hot sun with trenches from previous flowing water. Some of these surfaces were so hard it was like hitting off a rock. I think you’ll appreciate this course more if you can stay in the fairway extremely consistently. Scrambling is nearly impossible and your game will suffer dramatically with only a couple mishit shots.
great course
The course is in very good shape and challenging from the blues and difficult from the black tees.
Short but in great condition.
First time playing there since the renovations, course is in great condition, but too short. Some of the part 5s are basically par 4s.
Best value
The rates for this course makes it the best bang for your buck. Course is challenging and a wide variety of holes with different features. I will definitely be coming back
Unique layout
This course has been redesigned I was told. It shows up in a variety of ways. 3 consecutive par 5s which is a first for me. Par 32 front. Par 38 back. This wont be everyones cup of tea. A number of blind tee shots. A number of sloped fairways. If you are iffy with your driver bring a bumber of extra balls. That said if you can hit straight 3 woods or 5 woods or long irons. The course is not long. Accuracy trumps length significantly with this course. Fairways are so so. Greens are very good and fast. Want to be below the hole. Prior Course knowledge would be very helpful. I will play again when I am in the area.
Decent Course!
Went and played...greens are in excellent shape. Course is somewhat short, but challenging and fun. I'd definitely come back. Tough to lose balls here which is nice.
