Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Avila Beach
This course used to be fun when the owners took good care of it. I like the quirkiness of the layout. But the fairways now are rock hard and the grass is really sketchy - patches of little or no grass all over. The greens aren't too bad but they need to enforce fixing your ball mark. Sand traps are awful. They recently put in new sand but it's not fine sand and it has pebbles. Things got worse with the rains the past winter weakening some cart path bridges. Its been more than six months and they haven't fixed them.
So Much Potential
I've played Avila Beach Golf course for many years, the location is perfect. The rolling hills of the front 9, the bisecting waterways and bird wildlife of the back 9 make this course layout superbly unique. The on course and office staff are consistently accommodating and always friendly.
The putting greens are in good to very good condition, however, for many years the FAIRWAYS have been in VERY POOR condition! I do not pretend to be a trained grounds keeper, but most courses will annually plug their fairways (for improved turf condition and water absorption) and maintain/upgrade their irrigation systems. Neither has been done for many, many years. With proper attention to the course condition Avila Beach Golf would be one of the best courses to play in all of California! Avila has become one of the "go to" beach towns in California, therefore attracting golfers willing to pay a premium for such a beautiful setting and challenging course.
Not quite the resort they claim!
Luckily this was a “hot deal” because if I paid full price I would have been very unhappy. We paid approximately half of their normal rate of $98. The carts were basic with no GPS. The fairways were a mix of grass and weeds with hard dirt underneath. There were a few areas where the cart path were under repair so a “detour” was created which left many confused as to where they were going and had to use the gps on their phone to locate the tee box. Greens were nice. Overall, I would not call this a resort golf course. It felt like a barely maintained muni course. The owners need to put some effort into the course and not just the party area at the end.
First time visit and we will return
We had an early tee time and never saw the twosome in front of us and the foursome behind us. The course was still dealing with damage from the winter storms. This did not dampen your round of golf. The front nine are completely different from the back nine. It felt like we were at two different courses.
Maintenence"
Course needs a lot of work. Tee areas were rough and most had tee markers missing. A lot of bare areas in fairways with no markings. Those "sand" bunkers which were not "ground under repair" were full of dirt. One positive were the greens which were in fairly good condition, though very slow.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and share your experience with us. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have faced with the tee areas, fairways, and bunkers. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration as we strive to improve our course.
Avila Beach resort
The greens were quick and in decent condition. Not so much the fairways. Pace of play was not an issue. Suggest a little better signage to guide between holes.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We apologize for the condition of the fairways and will take your suggestion about signage into consideration. We appreciate your feedback and hope to provide you with a better experience in the future.
Terrible condition. Not fun!
This used to be a fun and beautiful course to play but the front nine was more like a cow pasture and zig zag through fairways with very little signage to direct you to the next hole. Back nine was in a bit better condition.
Under repair
I usually love this course because of the unique layout but please put sand in the sand traps instead of piles of sand in the traps! Fix the cart paths and put some grass on the fairways ! Never saw a Marshall once to speed up the four walkers two groups in front of us and the tee boxes could use a little love. The greens were great however but I think the past storms that came through here recently did some damage.
Don’t Water
I play this course once a week in a weekly Tournament. When playing the front 9 water the back 9 and Visa versa. Not to fun playing golf when the water is on every fairway. It’s bad enough when you slice one into the creek or hook one into the hillside. Hitting one in the Sprinkler area is worse, because you get Wet hitting a normal shot. Please don’t water during Tournaments.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the watering schedule during your tournament. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration.
Good/challenging course
Amazing amenities and very friendly staff. Course is challenging due to narrow fairways but overall was an amazing time. Everyone but the Marshall were friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth the money

Typical Central Coast Golf
Fairways could be a lot better. Greens and Fairways had more than one type of grass. Overall, a good place to play golf.
