About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Another Fun Round
I played Avila twice in one week thanks to great deals on GolfNow. Due to recent rain, the fairways and greens were in good shape. The course was busy on a Friday afternoon so the starter had me start on the back nine. I played with 2 other golfers who play Avila regularly. It's obvious that the course hasn't been kept up...cart paths are degrading and there hasn't been sand in the bunkers for over 5 years. I had 2 bunker shots and played them like I was hitting from a dirt area which works better than trying to hit a normal bunker shot. Avila could be a great course with some TLC.
Pleasantly Surprised
I hadn't played Avila Beach GC in over 5 years and I had very low expectations about the course. Yes, it needs some TLC, especially the bunkers, cart paths, and tee boxes. The course has a beautiful layout and some fun challenges. The central coast got about 3 inches of rain a week ago, and this was very beneficial to the course. The greens were in good shape. I would recommend this course if you could get a "hot deal" and I will play it again. Right now, the priority seems to be a venue for weddings, concerts, fund raisers, and other events. Golf is taking a back seat and that's too bad because it could be a great golf course.
So disappointed
So disappointed and some what puzzled by all the 4 and 5 star review of this "golf course". I play golf all over the country, this has to be one of the poorest maintained I've ever played. From Tee Boxes to Greens pure crap. Poorly marked and routed, dry as a bone and full of weeds.
My guess there is a funding issue or plans to redevelop this land into a townhome community. I believe it is owned by a land developer, certainly does not have respectable golf facility in mind. Not one employee visible on the grounds. Packed it in after 9, it was that ridiculously managed, just not fun!
Poor green and fairway grass condition
Were very excited to play at the Avila Beach Golf but course condition was way below expectation

course is not well maintained. no sand in traps, greens are diseased. fairways are hard and dry.

not what i expected for the money
Fairways reminded me of a pasture. Holes were not easy to find with no map of the course itself. Some tee boxes you had to shoot between trees. probably wont play again.
Good value for the money
Booked a very reasonable tee time (under $20 with a.cart). That said it was a good value. Green in good shape, fairways need some help in numerous spots, but I couldn’t pass up the inexpensive round.
