Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Long forgotten friend
Because of the long interval of not being able to play golf ( The pandemic), I began to think of courses that I hadn’t played in many years. Avila was was one of them. I was pleasantly surprised while playing my round how much this course requires placement and club selection. There are few holes that require course knowledge. Overall I was happy with my round and felt great that I played. Still a little rusty, but it won’t take long to get back to form.
Balmy Bliss
My first time playing the course, magnificent morning and played solo.
Staff was efficient and friendly while adhering to appropriate safety measures.
The course was in wonderful shape, the dry weather has made the greens perfect and pretty fast.
BE MINDFUL TO FIND THE FAIRWAY on the front 9, everything runs to the creek if you are right handed and naturally slice the ball. The back is a little more forgiving. I can't wait to come back and play this course again.
Grumpy
Fun course but too many grumpy old men trying to hurry you up!
Pleasant Day
Drove 2.5 hours to play this course for the first time. Nice drive along the ocean and no traffic. Teed off as a solo for the first 9 used my own cart and walked the course. There was slow play but since I was walking didn't mind the pace at all. Dropped an extra ball here an there when I was getting too close the twosome ahead of me. By the 11th hole I did join the twosome ahead of me which was fine. Some of the holes were a little weirded but going back and will know where I have to aim. It was a fun course, tee boxes weren't perfect but since LA county is CLOSED, I'm not going to nitpick about everything. Life is definitely too short to do that!
Avila Beach
Rode the Blues (6550/71.8/131) as a single in less than 3H mid morning on a GN "Hot" deal. The weather was around 65, sunny and fairly calm.
COVID-19 conditions throughtout, so no services offered. Probably the best I have ever seen Avila look.
The tees were all over the place. Some were terrible, others almost pristine but many were unlevel.
The fairways had good coverage and were semi lush.
The rough was mostly thick and clumpy.
The traps need an overhaul. Everyone I saw was raked, but there is little sand and what is there is not good quality.
The greens putted nicely. Firm and medium fast, they rolled well.
The tree lined layout is up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are less than a mile from and can hear the ocean. Lots of trees and hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you nned to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on many holes. Average layout in mediocre playing condition, but it's a fun layout to play. Small warm-up range with mats that would accomodate short irons only beside the first tee. Rough around the edges, but recommended.
Great pace
Nice track with some great views. I even saw a deer.
Awesome
Greens were great and fast. Staff are very friendly. Over all conditions of the course was good for this time of season.
Avila Beach
Rode the Blues (6550/72.2/132) with Mike in 4H, 15M midday for $34 on a GM deal. The weather was around 70, sunny and breezy, 1-2 club wind most of the round. The customer service was good from all encountered. Really challenging, fun layout but the playing conditions were very rough around the edges. Many holes had areas that were soggy due to recent rains. The tees were terrible, worst tees I have played on in a long time. It was like teeing it up in the rough. Good coverage, but they had not been mowed recently and many were unlevel. The fairways had good coverage and were winter thin. The rough was mostly thick and clumpy. Punitive, often hard to find your ball until you were right on top of it. The traps were poorly maintained and the sand quality was poor. The greens were very good however. Firm and medium fast, they rolled nice. Downhill putts were treacherous. There were a couple of pins on crests that if you missed downhill you were going to have 12' coming back. The tree lined layout is up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are less than a mile from and can hear the ocean. Demanding layout from the Blues, especially in the wind. Decent amount of doglegs and water, course knowledge would be worth a few strokes on where to aim and how the hills affect the ball once it lands. Above average layout in very mediocre playing condition. Small warm-up range with mats that would accomodate short irons only beside the first tee. No recommendation.

Nice Layout/ Wide Open
Played here on a Friday afternoon. Teed off around 2:15, just my 9 year old son and I and finished by 5:30pm. The sun set at 5:05, so we were the last ones on the course. I played this course back in 2011 and it seemed much better now, great layout, some tight holes in the front 9. Paid a twilight rate of $32. Nicest thing was the course was wide open. Other than a couple of regulars walking the course we could play at our own pace.
Great layout
I've played Avila a half dozen times or so and conditions seem to come and go like the tide. Greens were in decent shape. Firm and fast. They had a few pitch marks here and there that caused some bumps and lumps, but weren't too bad overall.
Fairways were ok. Tee boxes were absolutely atrocious.
As for the layout, it's a blast. Avila is a shot makers course with a few wide open holes to blast away in between. The track has hills to negotiate like the par 5 #3 you have to go up and over to get to the small green, a few lakes/ponds surrounding par 3 greens and three forced carries over the ocean inlet.
Hole #11 also has a small cutout in the middle if a hill that you have to negotiate. Other tee shots require place kicker accuracy to split the uprights between trees planted on both sides of the tee boxes. Fun times!!
You will use every club in your bag and every shot in your arsenal. Fun factor meter on this course is pegged, with conditions .... Good enough to let you post a good score but bad enough to give you an excuse if you don't.
Avila Beach
Played the Blues (6537/72.2/132) with Alex326, Dale and Darren in 4H, 15M midday. The weather was around 60, sunny and windy. 2-3 club wind a good portion of the round. The customer service was good from all encountered.
The tees were a mixed bag. A few were good, most were mediocre and a couple were bad. Adequate coverage, but numerous tees were either cut pretty high and/or could use leveling.
The fairways had good coverage and were winter thin.
The rough was mostly mowed down and also had good coverage, winter thin.
I was not in any traps but they looked poor. Not well maintained and the sand quality was poor.
The greens were very good however. Firm and medium fast, they rolled nice. Downhill putts were treacherous. there were a couple of pins on crests that if you missed even a tap in downhill, you were going to have 15' coming back.
I had played here over a decade ago and remembered most of the holes when I saw them. The tree lined layout is up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley, no ocean views even though you are less than a mile from the ocean. Demanding layout from the Blues, especially in the wind. 40-60 yard difference in the Blues/Whites on many holes. Examples of the extremes included playing a 234 yard par 3 instead of a 174 yard par 3 on #15. On #16, 422B/376W, a dogleg left par 4 playing into a 20 mph wind, my best drive could not reach the dogleg from the Blues.
Decent amount of doglegs and water, course knowledge would be worth a few strokes on where to aim and how the hills affect the ball once it lands. Above average layout in average condition, recommended.
NOT worth the money
This course is in desperate need for an upgrade. The conditions are ratty at best. When we were driving up we saw the course to our right but kept thinking... This can't be it. Saying it is in muni shape is an insult to muni courses.
$87 with a cart on a Saturday... Go somewhere else.
Fun challenging track but needs some maintenance
A fun and challenging track at a great central coast location. Course offers several challenges and forced carries whole using the natural terrain for some great elevation changes throughout the front 9.
Fairways are in super shape. Greens are 50/50 some are perfect while others have huge dead spots that are dirt, which I assume is from sort sort of disease. Tee boxes are bad and sand traps are horrible. They are solid hardback dirt.
This is my 3rd time playing this course and everytime its been a different route so get clarification on which holes are played in which order (they lack proper or any signage). Also no beverage cart on a Friday? At least put some water stations out.
Will not play again
I didn't think that the course was worth the price.
Avila beach Review
Purchased this round on a hot deal and was stoked because I've wanted to play this course for some time. The price was significantly less expensive then their normal rate. I was disappointed with the deal, was not worth the hot deal rate. The course needs some work.
great course for the price
the course had some tricky and different holes.greens were fast and consistent would go there again.
Surprise!
Vacationing with the wife, booked online for myself. $55 was the quote, got there and was informed $20 more for the cart and $18 for my wife to ride along. Got paired up with 2 other nice gentleman going single, thank god as there were a group of drunk guys now behind us hitting balls into us all day!! It took us over 5 hours to play this course, there is a marshall but he doesn't seem to do a darn thing. Very slow frustrating pace, and 2 of the holes were "out of service"????? With alternate holes that were a joke! Will not play here again.
golf review
We booked on line and had a 100 pm tee time.
We got there early and they allowed us to tee
off an hour early. We brought our dog with us and she
was going to have to stay in the car. We asked and the person was nice enough to allow us to take the dog
on the golf cart. We and the dog had a great time
