This course used to be considered a hidden gem. Now, Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont is an off-the-beaten-path known reasonable joy. Stopping on the way from Los Angeles to Palm Springs for a golf detour is no fool's play. Not with the fast greens, dramatic elevation changes and swerving fairways available at Oak Valley in Beaumont.

A Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley design, Oak Valley is probably best known for greens that are anything but desert typical. Speed is the name of the game here, with a tap sometimes too much on a downhill putt.

Recognition does not travel that quickly. It took a decade for Oak Valley to get a four star rating from Golf Digest. Once it did, Beaumont suddenly became a golf stopping spot on the Palm Springs express. Now, you're considered a smart golfer if you linger on the way to Palm Springs.

"It's a nice getaway from the crowds in the desert, as well as some of the other, more populated golf areas," head pro Scott Arnold said. "It's almost like being in the country. No houses line the fairways. Each hole is different. And because of the way it's laid out, you often can't even see another hole from the one you're playing."

Needs Work

Been years now without over seed so fairways are dormant Bermuda grass with a mixture of grasses the wind and birds have passed on over the years...thus fairway lies are not the best....just turning into another public course struggling to get by....still the great course set up and greens are still very nice. Just wish it was in the shape it used to be but I guess no one is going to pay anymore to play there.

Joker

I was a little upset that the marshal allowed a group (4) to each play 3 balls. I reported them and nothing was done. This should have been a 3.5 hour round but ended up being almost 6.

greens and tee boxes are in great shape. Fairways leave a lot to be desired. Nice layout excellent value but they need to spray weeds and seed the fairways

The good and the bad

Pros:. Great layout, ambience, scenery, little shorter course with a lot of variety. Greens were in very good condition and rolled true. Pace of play was excellent, got done in 4 hours despite the Starter telling me they were busy this late morning.

Cons: Lot of tee boxes were in bad shape. Some you felt like you were hitting out of a sand trap. Fairways were dormant. Hopefully they will green up in the spring. Glad I got the hot deal for $50, $69 morning green fee is too much given overall condition IMHO. Other tracks in better shape for same or less.

Layed back

This course is high on my list. I usually hit extra shots working on aspects of my game. Other courses pair singles up even if no one is one the course. Drives me crazy, so I usually shy away from those courses.

The pace of play was great, I will let players play through, at the same time I'm not pushing the group in front of me.

I understand things are different when it's busy, and this staff here is excellent in how they handle their groups of players.

Tee boxes, fairways and bunkers in poor condition. There is more brown than green gras in the fairways and rocks in the bunkers. Overall this course is run down and we will not play there again.

nice course, if a bit neglected

I played two rounds in perfect weather on a Wednesday morning, no more than six hours total for the 36 holes. I was by myself and other groups let me through -- a standard courtesy, but you'll find courses where the regulars stubbornly won't do it.

The course is pretty badly chewed up, and probably would be more fun with "winter rules," but I played the ball down. Lots of the trees and bushes that line the fairways are de facto OB, because you'll never find a ball you hit in there, so mistakes off the tee can be punished severely. Greens were good and downhill putts were slippery -- you have to have the perfect line from even 5-6 feet above the hole, otherwise forget it. Most greens are surrounded by weird little foothills and depressions (former bunkers?), and they tend to be narrow, so you can find yourself in challenging situations just a few yards off. Hopefully you can float your 60* ten yards from a matted-down lie that's level with your knees.

I was surprised at how quiet the course was and I hope they can stick around, but admittedly it has the look of a place that's just hanging on. Everyone I encountered was friendly, though, staff and other players.

Great Value, Nice Course

First time I’ve played Oak Valley after driving by it on numerous occasions. I was pleasantly surprised, course had a great layout, was challenging but fair. Only issues today was standing water in some traps and areas on the course due to recent rains.

Great course management experience

Course is a little rough on the fairways but very nice greens. This is one challenging course. The hole might be short but you must dial in even the shortest approach shots. Staff is extremely friendly. Pace of play was excellent. Easy to get lost on the course if you don’t pay attention to the signs. We ended up on hole 16 after hole 12 by accident. Missed a Sign that said turn. This course has a lot of character. Hit 3 wood.on a few of the holes just for better positioning on the approach shots. Enjoyed the round!

Very quick greens

Oak Valley has large undulating greens that gave tour quality roll and were as fast I’ve ever played.

First time here. I’ve been playing on grainy Bermuda all summer. I am a 70 year old 8 index. We played from 6300 yards, 130 slope.

I shot 91 with 12, count ‘em, 12 3 putts. Hit the ball well but could not adjust to the green speed all day.

This was a windy day blowing 20 - 30 mph all day above the Bannon pass where the wind mills spin. Two club wind. Made the very interesting layout very challenging.

They had recently opened from over seeding but course was in very good shape. I’d play it again and try to get some satisfaction on those really quick greens.
