Oak Valley Golf Club
About
This course used to be considered a hidden gem. Now, Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont is an off-the-beaten-path known reasonable joy. Stopping on the way from Los Angeles to Palm Springs for a golf detour is no fool's play. Not with the fast greens, dramatic elevation changes and swerving fairways available at Oak Valley in Beaumont.
A Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley design, Oak Valley is probably best known for greens that are anything but desert typical. Speed is the name of the game here, with a tap sometimes too much on a downhill putt.
Recognition does not travel that quickly. It took a decade for Oak Valley to get a four star rating from Golf Digest. Once it did, Beaumont suddenly became a golf stopping spot on the Palm Springs express. Now, you're considered a smart golfer if you linger on the way to Palm Springs.
"It's a nice getaway from the crowds in the desert, as well as some of the other, more populated golf areas," head pro Scott Arnold said. "It's almost like being in the country. No houses line the fairways. Each hole is different. And because of the way it's laid out, you often can't even see another hole from the one you're playing."

Oak Valley back 9 Photo submitted by VICRAZ7 on 12/09/2013
Great track goes downhill
We used to play here a lot. Great track and very challenging but has fallen into a lack of maintenance and upkeep. No attention to detail with the one exception as fast greens did not disappoint. Fairways looked bad and the course in general has gone downhill compared to years past. No money? Staff was friendly marshall, both ladies at the restaurant and even the counter staff although by himself and stressed with calls and golfers checking in. We had fun but kinda sad to see. Upgrades overdue.
A country course
Each year we like to try a course on the eastern side of the mountains and this year we tried Oak Valley. The environment reminded us of some rustic country courses back home, very very different from what we' é been playing in the Palm Springs area. On a hot day there was no ice in the ice box and took a while to get it filled. They have clearly spent a lot of money building the course but it has no short game practice area. This was particularly important since a lot of strokes can be lost in the dense rough around the greens. If you don't hit down the center you are likely to add several strokes to each hole. We played in the wind which was not easy to figure out. Where the tee off areas and the greens were in great shape, the fairways had very little grass. The advantage was that our drives travelled for miles. Even the locals have trouble reading the greens. We were at least able to get a very good rate from GolfNow. There was no help with our clubs at the end of the game.
Bobcat
There was a frost delay but they started everyone in a shotgun format and it was just over 4 hours to complete. The greens were in excellent condition but the fairways were terrible, some of the fairways had as much grass as I-10. That was disappointing and caused a few wayward shots. A bobcat trotted across the fairway on the front 9 like he owned the place, neat to see. The pro shop was well run and friendly staff. The good greens could not fully make up for the very poor fairway conditions but it's a good layout. I would play again if I heard that the condition of the fairways improved.
First Time At Oak Valley
Although the fairways were patchy, the greens and surrounds were lush and well maintained. The greens were well protected with bunkers and mounds and tricky undulations on the sides made the middle of the green the best target. Trees line many of the fairways but the fairways are quite wide. Our only complaint is the 90 degree rule which frequently put us in danger from the group behind. My wife and I hit different distances and are not always consistent. As we drove off the fairway to the cart path, the group would hit although we were just moving a little way up the fairway to our next ball. Pace of play was very good as we finished our round in under 4 hours.
Excellent Challenge
challenging course, but the average golfer would enjoy the variety of holes the course offers. Loved the layout, , which meanders up hill and down dale. Lots of trees on the course too. Some wonderful views of the mountains to the north east.
Greens in good shape as are the fairways.
Just a reminder for those coming from Palm Springs: The temp is cooler in Oak Valley, so bring an extra layer of clothing; it got very cool from mid afternoon on.
Great Shape
Played course and fairways, greens, and bunkers were in great shape. Course is long and plays as tough as it's length dictates. It's a perfect test for your short game.
Makes a lot of sense why this course is often used for Monday Qualifiers.
Not your father's Oak Valley
I've been playing this course since it opened, when the 9s were switched around and there was a double wide trailer for a club house. I've always respected the fact that the club would close down completely for 2 weeks every April and October to overseed adn punch the greens. The course right now looks like it hasn't been overseeded in quite a few seasons. There are some bare patches and dormant areas that I would NEVER had seen before. I get that most courses have had to curb their water use and reseeding takes a boat load of water. But the course just isn't the premium course that it used to be. I can remember a time when it was the lowest green fees for a Golf Digest 4-Star course in California. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great track. But after playing it through its heyday it just isn't what it used to be.
All that being said the course is still a very challenging one and the greens are still top notch. I would still recommend the course to my friends and even with the current shortcomings it is still in my top 3 in the IE.
Worth the money for sure. I'll be back. It's just not the awesomeness that I've known for the past 20 years.
Used to be really good condition.
Now fairways are in bad shape. Should trim down tee box grasses. Rough are more lush than fairways. Greens are quite good.
Maybe I expected highly on that course coz I used to experience great out there.
slow play
Two some people in front of us, were playing very slow as they were hitting 2 -3 balls. In front od those two players, there were 5 people were playing. One of them looked like a instructor. We skipped them, but ended up another two plahers playing slow.
It could be nice if someone coordinate the speed of play......It was very upsetting....
Great layout
We love this course. Friendly staff and great layout make it a joy to play.
Fairways are in rough shape this year and is only negative against another nice round of golf.
Will be playing here again.
Whipped again...
Once again Oak Valley got me! This is one of my favorite in all of Southern California and one of the toughest if the wind comes up as it usually does in the afternoon. Great day I just left my swing in the garage at home.
CASUAL GOLF OUTING
NICE VARIATIONS FROM HOLE TO HOLE. MANY OF THE HOLES HAVE NICE SEPERATION BETWEEN THEM SO THERE ARE ONLY A FEW FAIRWAYS RUNNING SIDE BY SIDE.
Great Value
Course was easy to find off I10 and the staff was friendly and professional.
Great Course
Oak Valley never disappoints. They strive in upkeeping the course in great shape.
Oak Valley
Great Course, Great price. Can't wait till the next time
Good looking course
Great condition keep ball in fairway or you're in trouble. In the need of a beer cart otherwise nice course
The Oak after reseeding
In pretty good shape with some poor areas off the fairway. Greens were a little bumpy, as others have noted, in the afternoon. Pace of play was ok. This has always been one of my favorite tracks, and when it is in good shape, it is both a good test and a fun experience. I'll be back.
Great value ! Good test of golf!
Course was in great condition. Greens were a little bumpy in the afternoon. Rough was higher than I have seen in recent months. Iron shots stuck on the greens. Fun layout. No cart girl for snacks & drinks was a bummer.
