Chula Vista Good Course - Value and Convenience
I'm a 13.5 index and the course is just minutes from my house. While the fairways have suffered from the drought, the staff has committed precious water to the maintenance of the greens which are in good shape. The relative flatness of the course is offset by the Sweetwater River which provides a lateral hazard to the majority of the holes and challenges golfers to avoid them which adds to the challenge of the round. Proximity to the coast provides pleasant ocean breezes on warmer days. Attractive green fees and generous resident and senior discounts make the course a challenging and pleasant alternative to a trip to the range at a slight to no differential in price. Give it a go and enjoy the SoCal weather.
Poor condition
Needs work on fairways, greens, t box, and fairways again. Bunkers are nice. IPA beer taste good. Enjoyed the course 10 years ago
Wanna Rip your Driver.
There is enough room on the course to unleash your Driver. If you want a challenging Muni, this course can do it from the Back Tees. Fairways are a bit rough, but around the greens are ok.
Overall Bad
As a visitor to the area we weren’t aware that the municipal courses would be in such poor condition. Overall the course did not present well, tee boxes in rough shape, fairways are in poor condition and the greens are bumpy, soft and might as well not putt! The slow play was rediculous and course Marshall’s seemed to let it go. A golf now rating of 3.2 is very generous.
Course condition
The course reasonably in good shape for playability. However, some of the green has dead grass ( bald spots) as well as different type of grass growing.
It appears that the staff are working hard in getting the course back in shape and I understand this will take time to get the course back to its potential beauty all around.
Overall, it's a good course!!!!
Spirit Airlines of SD Golf - in a bad way
This course could be a gem. It really still is, due to the layout and relative cost., but the management is atrocious. This review is based upon four rounds here with the last two int the last two weeks.
1. Layout - very good and fun. Significant smudge due to hole #3 however.
2. Greens - "good" greens. Slow and pretty true with intermittent challenging pin placements relative to contour and surrounding features.
3. Bunkers - "decent".
4. Fairways - poor at best. The remedy for all the bare spots and other issues is to remove dead sod and replace with new sod with seemingly nothing else. What could go wrong? Hope you are good at hitting from dirt.
5. Service/intangibles: This is where the horrible management really "shines."
Pace of Play: Of course, CVGC has a We (twosome) were sent off early with a twosome who literally just walked in the Pro Shop and told they were on the tee (20 mins before tee time). We split into two twosomes before the third hole because there was no one behind and they needed to get their (very good) game together. No big deal. Foursome in front moving fine; of course we have to wait as a twosome. By the 12th the foursome and the rest of us had caught up to another foursome when there hadn't been one in front of them on the first part of the front nine for at least six holes. Which brings us to...
2. Marshals: Nicest fellas in the world here. Save my butt on the front nine when I didn't bring enough hydration into the round. But when at 13 it became obvious that the foursome two in front of us was causing the ten minute delays between shots, the marshal told us "I don't think they [the slow foursome] know what they are doing." Yes, we understand that. "Can you ask them to speed up?" Reply, "They are playing to the best of their ability." Yes, again, we understand, but so are we except for the long waits between shots. Finally talked to them and, shocker, we moved at a good speed from there on.
3. Cart/Pro Shop: For the second time here out of four, my cart died. Last time it was on the FIRST HOLE! This time it was on #7. We tried to call the Pro Shop about it, but there was no answer to both of our separate calls to the number listed when you Google the course. The beverage cart attendant finally helped us to have a new cart "ready at the turn" The cart attendant at the turn did not seem to know of our issue, but did give us a new cart and helped transfer our stuff. He also commented, "This [carts dying ] has been happening a lot. OK. Pro Shop guy (also the manager) confirmed we had called the right number but denied having received any calls except' "one that transferred to the bar." Nice try.
Until there is a new management team in place, come into this course with eyes wide open. Its like flying Spirit Airlines, but in a golf cart.
Chula Vista Golf Course
I had a great time here the coarse is challenging in every hole.i really enjoyed my visit here staff was extremely friendly and courteous. The greens where perfect. There is parts that is being repaired but eventually it will blend in
Can’t beat 19$ with cart
Chula is a muni so expect areas of lift clean and place in fairways. Pace of play was great, greens in great condition
Terrible conditions
The course was still in terrible shape. I play here maybe two times a year and the course conditions never get better. I would say I lost at 5-6 strokes due to horrendous lies in the fairways and around the greens. I wouldnt pay the $25 again to play here.
Plowed field
I really like the layout of the course but the condition of the fairways and greens is a shame. You can’t beat the value for senior citizen but I think a slightly higher fee for a decent course would be worth it. Close for a couple of weeks to allow the grass to grow and give the ground crew time to get the greens in shape. Make the course what it should be!
Love this course!
The most important feature of this course... The Staff at Chula Vista is always friendly, polite and helpful. I thoroughly enjoy playing this course.
Extremely poor course conditions
The staff and volunteers do a good job but unfortunately the fairways were in EXTREMELY poor condition and there was not a single green where the ball wouldn’t bounced a at least a dozen times on a 10-15ft put.., there was plenty of times that we opted to move the balls while in the middle of the fairway just to avoid the dirt and damaging our clubs. I’ve played in the great majority of courses in San Diego County, and unfortunately compared to other courses within the same price range this course has been the worse so far.
Had fun!!!
The greens were a bit inconsistent. But the overall experience was good.
