Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Paying for the Course Designer

$168 pre paid. NO RANGE BALLS included.Cart yes, but NO GPS setup. Good course design but thta about it Played the Canyon and the Ranch courses (3 - 9's) Greens were in good condition about a 11, but posted at 10.5 per GREEN INFO. Warmer weather made them harder, hence course knowledge helped and told you to lay up or play to short of the pin. I have played better courses and have NOT paid as much. (Rustic Canyon near me at HALF the price) Staff was good, Gave me a BOOK to get me around. Had a 11:03 tee time, but because guys ahead of us were playing in their own ELEVEN man tournament, I got pushed back. Then waited each hole as they played the PROFESSIONAL game with skills of high handicappers. They were a Hole and a half behind as we made the turn. They were nice enough to purchase our threesome, drinks on the back 9. I would only go back to play the OTHER 9. Player in Twosome I played with was a member and stated they almost wanted to go private, if enough members joined...Maybe at these prices they should...NOT IMPRESSED WITH ANYTHING other than the course...Give the BLACK KNIGHT his props. Canyon was a solid 9, #5 on Ranch is nice but others just seemed okay

I love this layout

This Gary Player design is challenging and rewarding. The course was in beautiful shape when I played. The greens were rolling true and fast (12 on the Canyon, 10 on Ranch). Great amenities, friendly staff. I will be back.

Toughest Course in San Diego?

I think this is the toughest course I play in San Diego.

The greens are fast and tricky, the fairways can be narrow and you have to hit over canyons often. Not a lot of room for error, bring lots of balls. The staff is great very friendly and accommodating.

What happened

Played Steele Canyon a year ago and was very pleased overall with course conditions and staff friendliness.

Can’t say the same this week. Greens ok but fairways were in terrible shape with weeds growing through fairway grass. Bunkers were muddy and those that weren’t were not raked and I was in the first group out. Starter never directed me to the Canton course so I just went off the Ranch to Vineyard. Course was pretty empty I think the conditions were the reason. Won’t be back unless I read better reviews.

Wet greens doesn't mean soft greens!

Drizzly in the Am however greens were firm and fast all day. Fun challenging putts. A few slipped off the green. Attack the greens from high above.

Tight Lies and Unfair Greens

Generally, we love this course, with its magnificent views and elevation changes. This time, however, conditions were less than favorable. Fairways on the Canyon nine were dry and hard, with hardly any grass to be found. The greens were so slick that balls that landed on the green (and some that were putted!) rolled until they were off the green and down a gulley. The Vineyard nine was somewhat better, but the greens here were recently punched and sanded, and are still healing. With the recent rains last week, not sure why the course is not greener. WeI’ll play here again but, for the cost, will ask about conditions first.

Tough day on the course

First time playing course and found it to be one of the toughest layouts I've ever played. Most of the holes require correct positioning of drives with many being of elevated tees. Not my best day scoring. The greens were quite fast but in good shape, however, the fairways were in very poor shape somewhat due to the lack of water. However, I played some other course in the area and although they showed the effects of the drought the fairways were relatively consistent with the same type of grass.

Over 5 1/2 hour round

Unbearably slow. Took almost 51/2 hours to play. Two groups on every teebox and no sign of a Marshall or anyone to monitor pace of play. No one greeted us when we arrived. We had to keep asking people where we go how to check in, how to get range balls. Not worth the price.
