Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Fun and Challenging Course
Enjoyed the design of Steele Canyon. The greens were in good shape and running about a 9, but the rest of the course conditions were poor. The staff was friendly and helpful. Glad we played the course, but wouldn't do it again until the conditions improve.
Layout and pace
Played in 4 hours. The layout is always good. The course is in good condition for this time of the year, grass on every fairway and no dirt spots- which is awesome. The starter does a great job juggling getting everyone out and spreading it out so no delays. I just wish people would fix their ball marks.
Canyon/Ranch
Most of the greens are excellent
Members are allowed to play. in 5 balls which was extremely slow
Club house bar and toilets are being renovated
Expensive so avoid for now
Awesome place but pace of play is not great.
Canyon course has a par5, par3, par5, par 3 back to back and the course literally can have 2-3 groups waiting on each other. Outside of those 4 holes, course speed/pace resume to normal average.
The staff is great. The course mid week is one of the best deals around with golf now. Mid week play is about 60% better for pace of place.
Horrible
Lady up front was very rude and was no help at all, being 10 minutes late to my tee time, which I’m sure it’s not the first time someone’s been late , yes it’s my fault and my responsibility to be there early or on time. But there’s no need for rude and terrible service. A game plan to work things out. Would only recommend this course to anyone if SHE WAS LET GO!! Not my fault you’re in your 40’s working in a golf shop with 20 year olds. I’ll be sure to let my tribe (viejas) to not deal with this course in the future
Fun Round But Slow!!!
We played at 11:30 on a weekend in San Diego and was anticipating a slow round. However, there were 2 fivesomes ahead of us and according to the marshal, they course allows fivesomes for members. This seemed ridiculous and you add this with the fact that it hot outside and it wasn't as enjoyable as it could've been.
The course itself was in great shape though and we played Canyon/Ranch. I would say it's a very fair course and would play again, as long as there isn't another fivesome ahead of us again!
Amenities are behind Price.
They need to upgrade amenities to match the green fees. Cart girl cart is aged, very low capacity, and with very few options. Snack bar is sufficient. Pace of play was adequate. 4:15 pace. Carts seem quite used and slow. Course condition is good, greens are fast and kept up very well. Course has a great layout with good views. Overall one of those once every 6 months visit.
A very well run facility
Every single aspect of this place was running well today. The starter was getting groups out on time. The tee boxes were not stacked up. The pace of play was great and on top of that the staff was really nice .
I played the ranch and vineyard course and the tee boxes were in great shape and pin placement was fun too. Greens were rolling fast and also in great shape . Well done guys
I haven’t played here since summer 2020. This is my favorite course in San Diego and everytime I play it’s twilight. The first 4 times no issues with time. We played a 2pm twilight round. We’ve never had to wait, at all, at any moment on this course. They decided to let a huge group of members out to mess the entire twilight rounds up for everyone else. They were getting wasted and taking their sweet time. The tee boxes had group hitting and 2 groups waiting at one point. Never saw a Marshall. Absolutely pathetic for a course of this caliber. The condition of the course was amazing due the the recent rain. Staff here has always been pretty terrible, very rude and their customer service is beyond god awful. I’m sure it’s different if you’re a member there. I’m good on ever going back which is a shame, because this course is unbelievable.
A-Hole Asian couple (members)jumped ahead and caused a 5 and a half hour round
Too bad no one in management was present to kick off the jerkz from groups later than our tee time..... late for their 4-some but skipped ahead of several other foursomes and we ended up over 5 and a half hours due to their arrogance.
The marshall was powerless to do anything, so $200.00 for us 2 locals to just get pushed back was pretty pathetic. I will rethink playing there again. Im really ticked off to pay that much (discounted?)and them allow idiots to just do as they wanted.
We are sorry to hear that your recent experience at Steele Canyon was not up to par. Golf definitely has become more popular and tee times are harder to come by, with many new golfers enjoying the game, the atmosphere on the golf course has changed as well as people are enjoying being together and outside again. However, rude and inappropriate behavior is never tolerated and we apologize that a Staff member was not present to help. In the future, please call the Golf Shop to make them aware of any issues so that it can be addressed. Our Staff is responsive and will be as helpful as they can. Should you wish to join us again for a round please reach out to teetimes@steelecanyon.com so we can ensure you are taken care of and well looked after.
