Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

A truly challenging Golf Course
Great Golfing experience.
Best value in San Diego County
Beautiful scenery
Challenging
Course started a shotgun tournament in the middle of our round
In the middle of our round the course decided it was a good idea to schedule a large shotgun tournament somewhere in the beginning of our round. We were shocked to see 2+ foursomes waiting on every tee. It took 25 minutes to play every hole. Decided to quit the round and demand our money back. Don't understand the decision to do this however I chalked this up to poor course management.
Good challenge
Lots of elevation changes and sloping fairways that reward well placed shots. Mostly wide fairways, tighter on the short 4's, good speedy greens
Spectacular!
What a great course! Conditions were perfect!
A MUST PLAY !
Originally tried to get on Torrey but left too late to get a suitable slot .
So after researching other local courses plumped for Steele Canyon and was not disappointed .
Have played similar courses to Torrey in NZ where I live ( Kauri Cliffs , Cape Kidnappers ) but never played a course like Steele Canyon was unique and memorable .
Stunning layout , scenery , if you like elevated tees your in for a treat .
12 Handicapper , played off white tees and played to handicap , course plays relatively short off whites and while challenging in places ( small undulating greens ) did not consider it difficult .
Only criticism hence 4 stars not 5 was the pitch marks on the greens which is a shame because the greens run very true if you can find an area without pitch marks , a member commented to me it was down to lazy Californian golfers which is a poor show .
That a side this is ` must play ` course and offers fantastic value for money as well .
Hope my review helps , have a good game !
Cheers
Mike
Challenging but fun
The elevation changes were challenging for a Midwestern golfer but I had fun and had to used all my skills to play this course. I had a good time with a fun twosome they put me with.
Awesome
The views from some of the elated greens were worth the price all by itself. The course was a little tight at times but all in all a great layout.
Steele Canyon one of the best
Steele is one of the best courses around.
Beautiful course, wonderful standing on top of a tee box that towers hundreds of feet above the fairway with great views.
Very challanging course!
Good round of golf, very challanging couse, hot on summer!
Golfing
Lot of the green was narrow because of the drought conditions in San Diego other ThatI had a overall great experience
The course was nice. Golf carts need GPS.
Views were nice. Interesting character on the course. Water holes are low taking away the scenery.
Steele canyon golf course
Was pleasantly surprised at the condition of this course and the layout and staff was wonderful. I have played a lot of golf in my life at some of the greatest courses in the SF bay area and Monterey area and this course is right with those. My wife really enjoyed it also. I highly recommend this course.
Besides one thing, it was a great golf outing
This course is off the "main area" of SD, but totally worth driving 30 mins to. it's a great course with nice residential and mountain views. Not too challenging, but keeps it fun (i'm a 10 handi). Other than some dry patches and funky stains on the green, no complaints.
the ONLY thing i had a major issue with was the groundkeeping staff. Which is why i gave it one star on the "staff friendliness" category. I tee'd off at 8:30, which isn't super early, but i had to walk into 3-4 tee boxes with the sprinklers still going around. Like literally have to time it so you can run in hit your ball and run out - not fun, not cool.
The guys cutting the grass on the fairway, OK - do your thing, i'm going to hit and probably miss you. But the 3-4 times on my approach shots where the guy grooming the green isn't moving, i'm going to hit, but thanks for the visual, and audio distraction. Most courses, they groundscrew have common sense to move when you hit, or turn off engines or get out of your way. NOT HERE. On one chip shot 45 yards out, i was literally hitting with a moving tractor 10 feet away - the guy just had no courtesy.
It didn't affect my game majorly, but completely left a bad taste in my mouth. Wanted to complain to management, but hey, i'm not even from SD, so prob won't play again.
Great Resident Deal
From the bag pick up guy in the parking lot to the starter and the bartender. A wonderful experience. Course was beautiful and scenic, greens were a tuff read but well kept. Fluffy bunkers. Pace of play was good we played in the morning. Definitely give it a try if your a local even a good deal for out of towners too
The Black Knight
Love playing here! Staff is always helpful and friendly. Course is great! Views are excellent!
Feast Your Eyes on Blind Tee Shots
I played Steele Creek Canyon course (9 holes) in a scramble (which accounts for the slow play) and we shot E and honestly felt good about it. This course is a hand full. Blind tee shots all over guard this course from really understanding what your tee shots and approach shots should look like.
Be prepared for the putts to break an extra few inches all over the place. The greens rolled extremely well and true, but were tough to read. Tee shots were a lot of fun and allowed you to really work the ball, but still have slight misses and stay alive.
Views on this course are amazing and adds a ton of character to this place. Honestly, I didn't mind the slow play because it allowed us to take in the beauty of this course. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. This was a really fun experience.
Staff was great, pro shop and driving range was above average, but not anything you haven't seen before. Great place for an outing.
Pace of play
Loved the course and conditions, however for the first 7 holes played behind a very slow twosome. Wish the marshals did a better job of enforcing pace of play standards. This problem is golf wide . Steel Canyon is a great venue and I would recommend it to all.
Great day at SC
Beautiful day on the links. Played Ranch & Vineyard. I'm not sure you can get the Canyon 9 thru GOLFNOW which is supposedly the most popular...but is also the most crowded. Our foursome let a twosome play thru on hole 4 and we did not see another group all day. Played at our own pace. Course in great condition. Well worth the $.
All of the courses are available thru GolfNow, unfortunately we are not able to denote which you are assigned to on the website as the course rotations change daily and depending on the time of day. Your best bet is to call the golf course to see which courses are available at the time you are looking at.
I am sorry your round was disrupted by a large tournament outing, unfortunately when you book online tee times a golf shop attendant is not able to tell you the details of the day as when you call to book a tee time. There was an unfortunate circumstance with the event starting late because of a mishap with the bus charter service. However, we did take it upon ourselves to have our course marshall go out and inform the golfers on the course that rain checks or refunds would be issued to those already on the course effected by it. To say you demanded your money back is a bit extreme as it was actually offered. We had other groups still finish their round in 4.5 - 5 hours despite this hiccup. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, we hope to have you out and visit us again.
