Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

very nice
I am satisfied with this course
I'll be back soon.
Steele Canyon
The course is beautiful, challenging and a lot of fun. Pace of play was really slow in the morning, but no one was out in the hot afternoon sun. Good was great and the drinks cart appeared regularly. I would definitely play this course again, but probably not on a Saturday.
Lost my balls
Great. Course. Fun elevated tees in multiple locations. Thought I hit some good ones , but could not find them. My score was awful ,but my afternoon was great. Definitely coming back. Well worth the drive. Very accommodating staff. Double or nothing on 18 came in real handy this time out. Sorry ,Jim.
Nice course but expected more
Nice course in quite good conditions, but from a Gary Player course I would have expected something more.
The Ranch 9 holes efinitely better than the Meadows, but after the fitst 5 holes, quite challenging and also spectacular (the 3rd in particular) I expected more. Hole 6, 7 and 8 not very strong, better the 9th. The Meadows is quite flattish and there are not great holes to mention.
In summary a nice course to play but nothing exceptional.
Where's the Ranger?
Great course as usual. However, we are a 2 some behind a SLOW 4 some and they didn't let us play through! No help from on course ranger because none to be found. In 100deg heat would have liked to speed around in 3:30 hrs instead of 4:40 imposed by group in front. Yuck.
Hidden Gem
Best course in San Diego for the price. The drive is a little far but is completely worth it.
Worth the jaunt
Have looked at this course for a while and got a chance to play on a Sunday at 1:45PM for $39+ GN fees - rack rate is around $125 so I figured I'd take the ride out. Best decision ever. Course was great, every hole offered something interesting. Challenging yet fair, greens were in great shape, stimped at 10, but were also fairly tough with almost all built into hills and lots of undulations. I'm not sure I'd pay rack rate, but if I had friends in town I just may.
Always consistently good conditions
If you want to play somewhere you can count on the course being in great shape this is the one.
Very challenging, lots of different looks, really like all the elevation changes, and not "tricked up" just to make it more difficult.
One of the Best Courses in San Diego!
Have not played here in about a year and a half and cannot seem to remember why! Really enjoyed the Canyon/Ranch pairing with my wife and single digit handicap 17 year old son. Despite the water restrictions, the fairways are in good shape and the greens are outstanding. Fast and unforgiving! It's a little disheartening to see the lakes at about 1/4 capacity, but not much we can do about that.
OK value for the money if you are a SD resident - there are less expensive places to play but those courses are not nearly as nice. There used to be some great deals on GOLFNOW.COM which included golf and lunch during the weekdays, but have not seen that one in a few years and the "HOT DEALS" seem to be few and far between.
The only two suggestions I would have to offer are 1 - upgrade your carts ASAP to include GPS. While most of the sprinkler heads are marked, etc, the number of holes with forced carries and ravines, etc would benefit from GPS in the cart. 2 - and this is just a personal preference - open up the restaurant for breakfast before 10:00. Yes, the snackbar is open, but the menu is very limited.
Other than that, will definitely play here again!
Great time
Course seemed long, especially the par 3's.
Might have been the wind.
Pace was fast.
Women's tees were great for my wife.
Greens were great.
Very impressed
The course was in good shape. Had a great time. The carts are worn out. My cart died on me on the 8th hole.
Hopefully the staff was able to replace the cart for you in a timely manner. I do know we expect a new fleet of golf cars soon. Look forward to you visiting us again.
Great track.
Being from Maryland and vacationing in the San Diego area yearly, this is one course I come back to every year.
Hidden Jewel
This is a great course with an awesome view. Every hole has its different characteristic and very challenging. Staff is very friendly and polite. Greens are in great shape and fairways are well maintaned. At first I thought that it was a private course, but it was open to the public. Highy recomended and will come back to this jewel in the canyons soon.
Elevation changes make for a fun round
Course has nice layout friendly staff but for asking price fairways need more care. Greens look a little funny but roll very quick and true
It's cheaper than Madeiras for canyon golf but nowhere near as manicured
Would you mind sending us an email explaining what we can do to improve our fairways? Most customers are pleasantly surprised with how lush and green they are this time of year, especially as we are a desert style golf course with water restrictions.
Thank you.

Awesome elevation changes
We played this course on a Hot Deal though it was worth the full price. Very nice staff in Pro shop, helpful, food was great, service was also very good. The course was in great shape, a lot of fun to play, some huge elevation changes and nice views. greens were true and quick though not tricked up. we like it so much that we came back again to play again before we left as we were on vacation at La Jolla fro 2 weeks. Also should mention that my wife played and the course had sensible forward tees under 5000 yards in believe.
Nice Gary Player designed courses
We played Ranch/Meadow. Loved the Ranch and not too fond of the Meadow. Holes 5 and 6 that played extremely difficult and not fair. 6 was the worst because it requires long approach shot even from the forward tee. We prefer Ranch/Canyon 18. Beautiful and scenic.
What a blast!
Obviously two years without rain and mandatory water restrictions have had some impact but what a fun course to play. Highly recommended.
Awesome layout & scenery, Gary Player design, excellent bar
Very challenging and fun course to play when you are on top of your game! It has three nine hole courses: Ranch, Canyon & Meadow. All of them are fun and very scenic (Canyon & Ranch are my favorite 18 hole combination). There is lots of undulation and many elevated tee boxes. This is a very beautiful area of El Cajon/ Jamul in southeast San Diego off the 94 freeway (about a half hour drive from downtown/ Lindbergh Field airport).
I wanted to mention one of the best parts of my round was the Happy Hour specials that are available from 3pm to close EVERY DAY! All draft pints were only $3! They have $3 Stone IPA, Coronado Brewing Co. and Goose Island amongst the typical domestics. Also, your first pitcher was only $10 (might be limited to domestics). Pretty hard to beat that anywhere else! Didn't try the appetizer specials but the bartender mentioned sliders, quesadillas, wings, etc. I will most definitely be back soon to try the appetizers and recap the round with my buddies. All the staff was friendly and accommodating from the pro shop, starter, marshall, cart girl, and the bartender. I highly recommend Steele Canyon!
Thank you for joining us earlier this month. If you are able to join us again I recommend trying the Canyon course as it has many memorable holes similar to the first 5 on Ranch. Also be aware that we are doing some course improvements that should make the Meadow course more interesting by the end of the year. Hope to see you again soon.
