Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Steele canyon golf course
Was pleasantly surprised at the condition of this course and the layout and staff was wonderful. I have played a lot of golf in my life at some of the greatest courses in the SF bay area and Monterey area and this course is right with those. My wife really enjoyed it also. I highly recommend this course.
Besides one thing, it was a great golf outing
This course is off the "main area" of SD, but totally worth driving 30 mins to. it's a great course with nice residential and mountain views. Not too challenging, but keeps it fun (i'm a 10 handi). Other than some dry patches and funky stains on the green, no complaints.
the ONLY thing i had a major issue with was the groundkeeping staff. Which is why i gave it one star on the "staff friendliness" category. I tee'd off at 8:30, which isn't super early, but i had to walk into 3-4 tee boxes with the sprinklers still going around. Like literally have to time it so you can run in hit your ball and run out - not fun, not cool.
The guys cutting the grass on the fairway, OK - do your thing, i'm going to hit and probably miss you. But the 3-4 times on my approach shots where the guy grooming the green isn't moving, i'm going to hit, but thanks for the visual, and audio distraction. Most courses, they groundscrew have common sense to move when you hit, or turn off engines or get out of your way. NOT HERE. On one chip shot 45 yards out, i was literally hitting with a moving tractor 10 feet away - the guy just had no courtesy.
It didn't affect my game majorly, but completely left a bad taste in my mouth. Wanted to complain to management, but hey, i'm not even from SD, so prob won't play again.
Great Resident Deal
From the bag pick up guy in the parking lot to the starter and the bartender. A wonderful experience. Course was beautiful and scenic, greens were a tuff read but well kept. Fluffy bunkers. Pace of play was good we played in the morning. Definitely give it a try if your a local even a good deal for out of towners too
The Black Knight
Love playing here! Staff is always helpful and friendly. Course is great! Views are excellent!
Feast Your Eyes on Blind Tee Shots
I played Steele Creek Canyon course (9 holes) in a scramble (which accounts for the slow play) and we shot E and honestly felt good about it. This course is a hand full. Blind tee shots all over guard this course from really understanding what your tee shots and approach shots should look like.
Be prepared for the putts to break an extra few inches all over the place. The greens rolled extremely well and true, but were tough to read. Tee shots were a lot of fun and allowed you to really work the ball, but still have slight misses and stay alive.
Views on this course are amazing and adds a ton of character to this place. Honestly, I didn't mind the slow play because it allowed us to take in the beauty of this course. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. This was a really fun experience.
Staff was great, pro shop and driving range was above average, but not anything you haven't seen before. Great place for an outing.
Pace of play
Loved the course and conditions, however for the first 7 holes played behind a very slow twosome. Wish the marshals did a better job of enforcing pace of play standards. This problem is golf wide . Steel Canyon is a great venue and I would recommend it to all.
Great day at SC
Beautiful day on the links. Played Ranch & Vineyard. I'm not sure you can get the Canyon 9 thru GOLFNOW which is supposedly the most popular...but is also the most crowded. Our foursome let a twosome play thru on hole 4 and we did not see another group all day. Played at our own pace. Course in great condition. Well worth the $.
Challenging course...but fun!
I picked a very windy day, but even without the wind this would be a challenging course. Enjoyed it though, and really liked the quick greens. Fun course and pace of play was great.
Beautiful Course
Very well maintained course. Located in the mountains and vineyards of Jamul. Amazing views while playing of the desert area.
Above average public course with below average Golfers
Canyon 9 is the best, very scenic. Tee boxes excellent, fairways ok to good, greens have a lot of ball marks, otherwise ok for a public course. We are use to private course conditions. Truth is the course superintendent did a good job, but public play golfers don't fix ball marks and don't rake traps. Golf now afternoon rate was $59 with cart versus the $99 non-resident rake rate. Very female friendly course, and a good layout for men as well. If you don't mind ball marks and the occasional need to rake the trap and then re-drop, you'll find it scenic and enjoyable.
Long way from home
Flew across the country & scheduled Steele Canyon blindly. Rental clubs were pretty bad, staff made me leave my AMEX card as collateral for clubs ...like I wanted them! Had to work my way into a threesome...no help from staff. Canyon course was nice, Ranch course was completely different and ok. Canyon had a few impossible shots on it that could be reworked. Had fun, glad I got half price thru Golfnow....that is what it was truly worth. If you are going to charge $90-100 for no residents, then kick it up a notch!
dsgolfer, I am sorry you felt the TaylorMade rental clubs were inadequate. While they are not the latest model, they are from 2014 and we receive many favorable comments on them, especially when considering it is only costing $15 more than a $50 checked bag on most airlines. As is with any rental item some form of collateral must be held to ensure it's proper return. We could have held car keys or luggage, anything to guarantee we received the clubs back. Our standard and easiest policy is a credit card though, if it was an issue you could have mentioned it at the time. Booking as a single is never easy as you don't know if you will be paired up or not, sometimes people refuse. The customer service industry is not always perfect. Hope you had a nice rest of your trip to San Diego and enjoy your golf in SC.
Good course
Enjoyed it immensely, would play again
Enjoy the speedy undulating greens!!!
Chose this course based on previous GN positive reviews and we weren't disappointed. We could have got a cheaper fee if we'd gone for a Hot Deal but preferred an earlier teetime but even then the cost was very reasonable.
Staff all very friendly and accommodating. We arrived just as a team 4 Ball Scramble was going out so a little concerned the POP would be poor but after a great breakfast, the kitchen opening early for us, we had a few balls in the range and the the starter got us out early as well. No sign of the team event so we moved really quickly.
Played Canyon and Vine. I played the Blacks which gave a good test, some tight tee shots but also some where you can let rip. My wife played the golds with the odd red when there were big carries. The really tricky part about this course is the speed and undulations of the greens. They were mega quick and a couple of pin positions were in quite severe positions with approach putts and chips looking good at one stage and then continuing off the green and in a couple of cases down the banks into the ravines never to be seen again!
Overall opinion was we enjoyed the whole experience of Steel Canyon and would play again if we are back in the San Diego area. Thanks for a great day.
Looking forward to a return to Steele Canyon.
The starter was very friendly and put us out an hour before our scheduled tee time, in front of a corporate outing group. He gave us a yardage book and some quick course instruction before we teed off. Great Service!! We played the Canyon and Ranch courses and both were in good condition. We played the back tees making the courses very challenging. It was difficult to find the proper tees on some of the holes. Some of the holes had blind tee shots, making it a guessing game off the tee. We enjoyed our round and look forward to playing here again, now that we have a working knowledge of the course
Could have been so much better
Canyon course layout great, Meadow not so much. Maybe bad luck that I was at course on some sort of maintainance day but greens keepers everywhere. Not only that but never a thought given to vacating the greens or turning off power equipment when they saw a player on tee box or in fairway. They made us wait till they were done - this occurred in nearly every hole. Not worth it.
I am sorry for your frustrations with the maintenance staff, we will address it with them and make sure they are courteous for all golfers. I believe you went out at the crack of dawn as a single or twosome, correct? Please keep in mind that the maintenance crew have to get their jobs completed each morning and it is not always possible to stay ahead of a speedy first group. Please let me know if we can accommodate you again some other time.
What else can you say...?
This course just amazes every time. Hole after hole is just so unique and challenging but very doable for average and above golfers. We played the Meadow and Canyon nines and ended up loving both - not crazy long but pars and birdies are well earned. After playing all three nines several times, Meadow may be the under rated one of the bunch. It's tight but logical, and scenery as nice as any on the course. You still get plenty of the Steele Canyon famous elevation changes. It's just a fun place to play.
Do bring extra balls - you may need them - and just have fun. We did get on for an amazing price for a holiday thru a Hot Deal on GolfNow.
Excellent Greens and Fairways
Absolutely beautiful. Super Challenging. Greens are super fast right now. Must play!
Great Course
The course is in fantastic shape. Absolutely beautiful.
The starter was excellent. He knew there was a slow group ahead and so accommodated us by sending us off on a different 9. Its rare to see that level of service.
Highly recommended.
First time playing Steel Canyon!
I loved this course. We started on meadows and finished on ranch. This course has 3 separate 9's and they were all in very good condition. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were all cut and in very good condition. Greens were very fast but not hard to get used to. Now granted it was a Tuesday... We didn't have to wait at all. There was some construction going on, on different parts of the course but nothing that would hinder your play. I was very impressed with this course and plan to play it again soon.
