Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Great course

After finishing we were sorry that our vacation was ending and that we live clear across the continent. We would love to play this course many times. There were plenty of tees to choose from, elevated tees, long and short par 3's and great vistas. The conditions were good and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.

Challenging from the Blues

Course was in excellent shape, staff was friendly and greens were running at 11. My game at a 10.5 index didn't hold up to the 135 slope with the distance and wind. Nevertheless it was a fun outing and the couple we were paired with were very nice. I would certainly recommend playing Steele Canyon

pleasant Tuesday afternoon

Very friendly staff, got us off 20 min early. Marshall got a foursome to let us play through and after that finished our round in four hours. Greens in great shape, fairways suffering from the drought, but still in fair shape.

Changes in elevation.

Steele canyon is among the most beautiful and yet challenging courses in San Diego County. Breathtaking changes in elevation keep you entertained. The course was in great shape and the greens are FAST. Pace of play was quick and the staff was pleasant and helpful. We can't wait to play again. See you next week.

Interesting tract. All three nines playable & enjoyable

Very interesting course . Three nines are all playable and very enjoyable. Players of all ability will enjoy the test of golf. With five sets of tee boxes all can find a level of comfort. Greens are challenging and very fast.

Not as nice as the website made it look

I have lived in San Diego for 4 years and I am still having a hard time getting used to paying high green fees for average at best courses. I'm from the northwest and you can get so much more for your money up there. Way too many times have I checked out beautiful pics of courses and when I arrive the conditions are mediocre. Steele canyon is another example of that.

I would recommend calling courses in advance of your booking to check about course conditions. This time of year many San Diego courses are going thru maintenance periods and may not be at their peak. All of our maintenance dates are posted directly on our website and as a 27 hole facility we do close each of our 9 holes for approximately 2 weeks at a time so they have a chance to recover before play resumes. I am sorry our course did not meet your extraordinary standards this time, if you would like to call or email and discuss another opportunity to join us I would be happy to try and accommodate you.

One of the best in San Diego

The course is a great challenge and a diverse layout. It is more fun the more times you play it. They did punch Meadow in February so it is like a Chinese Checkerboard but I'm sure it will be excellent once it seeds.

Fantastic Course

Fantastic course. My buddies and I try to get out every other Monday morning close to sunrise to play. It's either Sycuan or Steele. You can't go wrong with either. Lately we've been playing Steele more because of the rate. It's an unbelievable value. Canyon plays harder for me but with three 9's, it is definitely a great place for all abilities.

The guys in the pro shop, marshals and the starters are always accommodating.

Weekends can get crazy. I played for the first time in the afternoon this past Sunday. Never again. It was a bloodbath. I was late for my time and there were no carts so I was kindly driven to the second hole by the marshal to meet the rest of the players in my time slot.

Slow day. We waited at every hole for 15 minutes not because people were playing slow just from being backed up by 2 groups at each tee box. No exaggeration. I stopped at the turn and called it a day.

Still love the course, but you'll never catch me there on a Sunday again.

Reminder to all...SC can be tough so tee it up at the correct box for your level of play.

Tough course, drought hurts

This is a tough track, made harder by drought. I thought they did all they could under the circumstances but I felt like I was playing off hardpan a lot of shots. I enjoyed the layout and I'd like to play it again.

Drought hurts even the best courses

I have played a lot of course over the last few weeks in all areas of the county.

This course was in the best condition of all of those. The greens are great, note Meadow was just punched so only two nines open. This means it might be slow on the weekends.

The fairways were still green a good divot can be found unlike other hard packets tracts.

That said event the best courses are hurt by the drought.

This course will challenge your play.

This course is very well kept considering it's up in the hills of East County where it's usually very dry and warm. This course will test your ability of play nearly every single hole. Distance here is very deceiving as well. Overall though, I will continue to go back.
