Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Better kept secret...
Great place to play if you're willing to drive a few minutes from San Diego. Very nice facilities and a very good value.
Pace of play is typically within reason and the greens are well maintained and quick.
Tee boxes on some holes could be improved as well as traps but overall I think it is a must play.
Three 9's: Canyon the most challenging, with Ranch and Meadow right behind.
Show up a few minutes early to gauge the speed of the greens on the practice putting area.
Good as I remembered
I played Steele Canyon about 15 years ago. It was fun then and was fun again this time. We do not have "Canyon" course in PA, so I really enjoyed those holes.Recent maintenance on the course was the only drawback. Range was good and so was putting green. Greens were pretty much grown back in after aeration.
Great course
This was my first time playing this course. It was a great experience. Greens were good, all fairways were good. Hole 4 on Ranch course is awesome.
I'll definitely go back!
Steele Canyon
I enjoyed Steele Canyon, it had been a while since I have played there. Glad I got a chance too. The Ranch greens were still a bit bumpy after the recent plugging but a great day overall.
GOLFING 2014
GREAT COURSE... ONLY VERY HOT DAY 103! WOULD PLAY THIS AGAIN IN A HEART BEAT
Hot Spot
Started one hour late because of a mens club tournament, course play was 5 hour long I would not have played if I had known the tournament was being played. It seems like mens club play too slow and act like they are playing for a million dollars... it really took the fun out of the game... way to much waiting for every shot...
What happened to Steele Canyon???
I play this course now and then with usually no disappointment! Played on a Tues at 1:45pm and it was about 92 degrees...so I expected little traffic on course! It took about 5 hours to play waiting on every hole with some par 3 ' s stacked up with 3 groups! There was no beverage cart that ever came by. Lastly, I didn't expect great fairways and rough because of our drought, however I play Steele Canyon from the blacks as a 5 handicap because of the fast and true greens...they were absolutely terrible! Normally they run 10+ but this day they felt sluggish with long grass, bumpy and guessing speeds around 8! What happened to this place? Very disappointed to say the least! Wouldn't recommend it in its current condition for the rates they charge!
worth double the money
My first time here went with friends. So i say bring your A game and bring your camera. This is the most amazing tough course in southern california. Just go and play this awesome course. Wow!!
fix your ball marks
Bar staff very nice. lots of ball marks unattended. come on people, fix your ball marks. if you don't hit the green fIx someone else's ball mark for practice
Best value for the money
I've always liked Steele Canyon, but sometimes it get expensive, not this time $29 just cant be beat by any other golf course of this caliber. Fairways and greens are in good shape, greens can get better, last time I played here was about two months ago and the greens where a bit bad, not this time.
Good overall
Played for my first time it is a narrow course in spots but fun and the pace of play was excellent I would play this course again
A hidden gem!
Recently moved to the area, and am playing with a friend a couple of times a month, maybe a little more. We have been trying different courses, and he had suggested this one. The green fee through Golf Now was $59, a steal! Especially for this course. Conditions were excellent. Pace of play was very good, especially for a weekend. Our twosome was paired up with another twosome. We may have waited on three or four shots all day. The group in front of us played quickly. Was not pushed either from behind.
Staff was very, very friendly and helpful. Only used beverage cart, so no comment on food. Facilities were well pretty new and well kept. Only complaint was I got there early and was hitting balls on the range--right into this big bright ball called the sun. Couldn't track my shots at all.
Played Canyon and Ranch. Fairways were in good shape. Greens had some ball marks, but other than that were true and rolled at a 9.5. Course is challenging with the front nine seeming to play uphill on most approach shots. Back required some carry over some wild growth areas. Good challenge, I will repeat!
exguisite
the course was laid out view beautifully the course was challenging and exciting. I'd would definitely recommend it to friends and family
Hit 'em straight! Great views!
Played the Ranch/Meadow 9s. Course was in great condition. It is a very challenging course but well worth playing. Traps could use some work.
I would definitely recommend playing. Make sure to select the proper tees
Great course
Very nice course, got a great deal on golfnow, I would never pay the regular rate here which is like 120 bucks or something.. Not when sycuan is right down the road.. But for the cheaper rate it was a very affordable round.
Steele canyon is a fun track
The course was in good shape, greens a little bumpy but still rolling around 9-10. Fun course overall
Arranging tee times
I was disappointed when I arrived at the Pro shop , after being assigned the Ranch Meadow courses we found out that if you wanted the Canyon course you needed to call and ask for the course specifically. Why doesn't Golf Now present that choice ?
The course rotation varies depending on what time of the day your tee time is booked. You may always call the golf shop after booking your tee time to see which courses you are on and make requests if available.
