Course Highlights
The three-nine layout delivers dramatic elevation changes and stunning scenery that consistently impress golfers unfamiliar with San Diego's hilly terrain. Friendly staff and well-maintained greens that hold up even after heavy rains make this course a reliable, rewarding choice.

Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Fantastic staff! Course conditions! Layout!

Played Sunday 7/14/13, found a great deal on golfnow.com. The staff there was one I've the best I've ever dealt with, 5 stars for sure! Course conditions were great, some pot marks on greens but other than that they rolled very true. Played the ranch/ canyon combo and loved the layout, very challenging even from the whites. Pace of play was good, finished in under 4 1/2 hours. Perfect day of golf.

Well maintained, poorly designed

This course has some of the best, unblemished greens in SD county. The staff are phenomenal and the facilities are adequate. Biggest drawback to this course is that regardless of which of the three nines you play, the course is built upon, in, and around mountanous canyons. If you like mountain golf, this is your baby. All do respect to Gary Player, but this golf course does not provide a realistic test of overall golf ability. Rather, you are forced to depend upon lucky breaks (or more appropriately, being punished for a well struck ball that unfortunately careens off a well placed rock, or canyonesque shrub. Only precise shot makers should visit this facility as all others will not have an enjoyable round.

Beautiful course

This course has lots of views. Several elevated tee boxes that are fun to tee off from. It's peaceful because of the location. The greens didn't seem to break too hard most of the time, which suits me just fine! A challenging course but you can score well on a good day.

Nice course with variety

I had heard this course was nice, so I thought I would see for myself. I am glad I did. Nice variety, forced carries, elevation changes, lakes, split fairways, etc. the price is a little steep, but sometimes you can find a deal on Golfnow. Some of the holes reminded me of other local courses.

Good course, great views

I played this course mid summer and was quite please. It was rather dry due to the season but gets the benefit of the doubt due to the heat and lack of rain. The Canyon and Ranch courses provide great views from elevated tees and provide a number of challenging tee shots. My only real complaint is the green a were really sandy which cause the ball to slide and hop off the club. Again that could just be a seasonal thing

Aeration...

Ranch 9 hole was being aerated but we only found out after pulling up to the 1st green. We were never notified upon booking the tee time nor when we checked in with the starter. This place is typically in top shape but there were burned out areas on the fairways and the fact that no one told us of the aeration played a hand in me ranking a 3. In the future, it would be great if you told your patrons of the course conditions as I recommend your course all the time to friends both in and out of town.

Three nine hole tracks provides excellent choices.

Well maintained course that offers challenges at every length. Very friendly staff in the club house and on the course. On the course rangers could help with the pace of play.

Great course with variety

This course has three nines that are all different. We played Canyon/Ranch and each was in great shape. Plenty of elevation changes with fantastic views from everywhere. While challenging, the course is fair and can be enjoyed by lots of players.

Good value with the Golfnow rate

Good course conditions, and an interesting layout, but I would not pay the normal greens fees there. The Golfnow rate was very reasonable. The starter got us out a little early, and even hooked my partner and me up with a range token. Played as a twosome, and the foursome ahead of us let us play through, so we played in about 3 1/2 hours. Course was in good shape, and the greens were running 10 on the stimp. With all the elevation changes and the wind, you needed to hit a straight ball.

Costly, but worth it on certain occasions.

Very nice, challenging course. I'd never play at the prices that they charge. The only way i'll be back is if i find another discounted price at $40 or below.

Challenging but beautiful and fun course

Steele Canyon is a beautiful course in a spectacular setting. There are a lot of elevated holes and holes that require you to hit over steep terrain and drainages, making it a very visually challenging course, but the scenery and condition of the course make up for the difficult conditions. If you play to your strengths (put the driver away), you can have a great time and put up a decent score.

One of best courses in San Diego!

We had such a great day. The course was in great shape, challenging but not crazy hard. Rough cut so you can find your ball. The awesome layout and smallish greens make it challenging enough. So pretty with wonderful views. Greens in great condition, held well and putts rolled true with quick, but not super fast speed.

The day was great and play was not slow. Staff was great and very helpful.

Will be back!
