Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
Three nine hole tracks provides excellent choices.
Well maintained course that offers challenges at every length. Very friendly staff in the club house and on the course. On the course rangers could help with the pace of play.
Beautiful, and challenging course!
The course has been in pristine condition the last few times I have played here. From the tee's to the greens, everything is very well maintained.
Great course with variety
This course has three nines that are all different. We played Canyon/Ranch and each was in great shape. Plenty of elevation changes with fantastic views from everywhere. While challenging, the course is fair and can be enjoyed by lots of players.
Good value with the Golfnow rate
Good course conditions, and an interesting layout, but I would not pay the normal greens fees there. The Golfnow rate was very reasonable. The starter got us out a little early, and even hooked my partner and me up with a range token. Played as a twosome, and the foursome ahead of us let us play through, so we played in about 3 1/2 hours. Course was in good shape, and the greens were running 10 on the stimp. With all the elevation changes and the wind, you needed to hit a straight ball.
Costly, but worth it on certain occasions.
Very nice, challenging course. I'd never play at the prices that they charge. The only way i'll be back is if i find another discounted price at $40 or below.
Great view !
Rainy day but all worth it still, although I wanted to play the Canyon nine... will have to do it next time !
Great course for golf.
This is a great golf course that I will definitely return to play in the future. My next trip I would like to play the Ranch Course and Canyon Course.
Challenging but beautiful and fun course
Steele Canyon is a beautiful course in a spectacular setting. There are a lot of elevated holes and holes that require you to hit over steep terrain and drainages, making it a very visually challenging course, but the scenery and condition of the course make up for the difficult conditions. If you play to your strengths (put the driver away), you can have a great time and put up a decent score.
One of best courses in San Diego!
We had such a great day. The course was in great shape, challenging but not crazy hard. Rough cut so you can find your ball. The awesome layout and smallish greens make it challenging enough. So pretty with wonderful views. Greens in great condition, held well and putts rolled true with quick, but not super fast speed.
The day was great and play was not slow. Staff was great and very helpful.
Will be back!
Friendly staff, challenging layout
The course provided a variety of holes with significant elevation changes. The greens are on the small side with subtle breaks versus some of these greens with dead elephants under them, much better and takes some local knowledge to read.
The pace of play was good, we got throught the round in 4 hours.
One issue I had was the greens were usually surrounded by mounding that required a climb up and down of 10-15 steps to enter and leave, after 18 holes that's a lot of climbing and would be difficult for someone with a disability or who is not in reasonably good shape.
Overall good value and I will definitely play there again.
A TOP FIVE COURSE IN SAN DIEGO
PLAYED CANYON/RANCH MY FAVORITE.
BEAUTIFUL SETTING,LOTS OF SERIOUS ELEVATION CHANGES.THE FAIRWAYS ON THE RANCH COURSE WERE LIKE CARPET.THE GREENS ARE NOT QUITE BACK YET OR I WOULD GIVE 5 STARS.
Still the best
After many years, Steele Canyon is still one of the best golf courses in San Diego. With a beautiful setting, the courses (three nines) present a challenge from every tee. Tucked away in Jamul, it is a course you need to find, but once you do you realize it is worth the effort.
Difficult greens,beautiful landscape
Great value booking with Golfnow. Very friendly staff. Challenging layout and greens. Paired with a local twosome who were very helpful and cordial.
Good but challenging
Quite difficult and challenging for beginners. Especially, the Canyon course.
This course has good and challenging.
This course has good.
But, sometime slow play because five sum play.
Anyway, I had feel challenging every time.
Thank.
Great golf value for the money
Very scenic and challenging. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Marshal maintained pace even though we were behind a very slow foursome. Liked the course so much that I did a replay to see all 27 holes. Bring extra balls, you are going to need a few.
It's chanllengable & great couese condition as well.
very good experience for last week at Steele canynon course.
Always a challenge.
It was nice to to the greens receptive to approach shots and still rolling true. Fairways were in good shape too.
great views
great views, fun layout.greens are fast but are alittle bumpy.
