Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Tight Lies and Unfair Greens
Generally, we love this course, with its magnificent views and elevation changes. This time, however, conditions were less than favorable. Fairways on the Canyon nine were dry and hard, with hardly any grass to be found. The greens were so slick that balls that landed on the green (and some that were putted!) rolled until they were off the green and down a gulley. The Vineyard nine was somewhat better, but the greens here were recently punched and sanded, and are still healing. With the recent rains last week, not sure why the course is not greener. WeI’ll play here again but, for the cost, will ask about conditions first.
Tough day on the course
First time playing course and found it to be one of the toughest layouts I've ever played. Most of the holes require correct positioning of drives with many being of elevated tees. Not my best day scoring. The greens were quite fast but in good shape, however, the fairways were in very poor shape somewhat due to the lack of water. However, I played some other course in the area and although they showed the effects of the drought the fairways were relatively consistent with the same type of grass.
Over 5 1/2 hour round
Unbearably slow. Took almost 51/2 hours to play. Two groups on every teebox and no sign of a Marshall or anyone to monitor pace of play. No one greeted us when we arrived. We had to keep asking people where we go how to check in, how to get range balls. Not worth the price.
First time back in 20 years…and disappointed
Didn’t remember how oddly designed this course was, and whatever fondness for layout I held in memory is gone now. And k ind of a locals only vibe. Don’t see coming back here in my plans.
Always a great place to play
This is my favorite public course in San Diego. The staff has always been friendly, the course well kept, and the greens are true.
The greens were running at a 12 (fast!). Pace of play was a bit slower than usual, do to a tournament ahead of my group.
A bit of advice: spend some time on the practice green.
Had a great time.
Great Course
Always a course to play when coming in from out of town.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER
Both of our groups cart broke down. Waited Almost 6 hours to finish a round because the pace of play is the worst I’ve ever experienced. NOT worth what you pay. Never coming here again. They lost my business and I play 4x a week at all different types of courses and price ranges from $20-$280.
Would not refund when I tried to cancel 1 week in advance.

Steele Canyon
I have played and enjoyed this course many times in the past. At this point, based on the below average of the tee boxes, fairways and greens, I could not recommend playing this course. I am not sure if it is a water issue or possible frost issues, but tee boxes and fairways are in poor condition. The greens were too firm (rolling probably at a 10) and for the average golfer, this is not enjoyable. I am not sure why they set them at this level, but to be fair they advised the greens were very fast.
Great layout, but groups of 5?!
Beautiful vista's through the canyons, but very disappointed to see THREE consecutive groups of 5 golfers in front of us.
Apparently they let members do this.
Not really fair to us tourists playing in a twosome or threesome.
Luckily we were steered onto the Vineyard 9 for the back 9 and saved an hour at least..
Sorry to hear you had difficulty cancelling your tee time. We do allow tee times to be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance of the playing time for those booked online. Please provide your tee time confirmation information to teetimes@steelecanyon.com and we will look further into your case.
