Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Steel Canyon is remodeling the clubhouse and therefore minimal facilities. The driving range was poor.

The course -Vinyard had very minimal grass in the fairways.& the Canyon course wasn't much better.

We had 6 players on our CA trip & played 4 courses.

All courses were great with the exception of Steel Canyon. We were very disappointed and will not play this course again.

Slow play

4 1/2 hours for 15 holes! We had to leave and couldn’t finish round because of the slowness of play. It didn’t help having the beverage cart out on the course slowing down the play too. Like scenery and challenge of course but hard to get in a rhythm when having to wait to hit practically every shot.

Fun and Challenging Course

Enjoyed the design of Steele Canyon. The greens were in good shape and running about a 9, but the rest of the course conditions were poor. The staff was friendly and helpful. Glad we played the course, but wouldn't do it again until the conditions improve.

Layout and pace

Played in 4 hours. The layout is always good. The course is in good condition for this time of the year, grass on every fairway and no dirt spots- which is awesome. The starter does a great job juggling getting everyone out and spreading it out so no delays. I just wish people would fix their ball marks.

Awesome place but pace of play is not great.

Canyon course has a par5, par3, par5, par 3 back to back and the course literally can have 2-3 groups waiting on each other. Outside of those 4 holes, course speed/pace resume to normal average.

The staff is great. The course mid week is one of the best deals around with golf now. Mid week play is about 60% better for pace of place.

Horrible

Lady up front was very rude and was no help at all, being 10 minutes late to my tee time, which I’m sure it’s not the first time someone’s been late , yes it’s my fault and my responsibility to be there early or on time. But there’s no need for rude and terrible service. A game plan to work things out. Would only recommend this course to anyone if SHE WAS LET GO!! Not my fault you’re in your 40’s working in a golf shop with 20 year olds. I’ll be sure to let my tribe (viejas) to not deal with this course in the future

Fun Round But Slow!!!

We played at 11:30 on a weekend in San Diego and was anticipating a slow round. However, there were 2 fivesomes ahead of us and according to the marshal, they course allows fivesomes for members. This seemed ridiculous and you add this with the fact that it hot outside and it wasn't as enjoyable as it could've been.

The course itself was in great shape though and we played Canyon/Ranch. I would say it's a very fair course and would play again, as long as there isn't another fivesome ahead of us again!

Amenities are behind Price.

They need to upgrade amenities to match the green fees. Cart girl cart is aged, very low capacity, and with very few options. Snack bar is sufficient. Pace of play was adequate. 4:15 pace. Carts seem quite used and slow. Course condition is good, greens are fast and kept up very well. Course has a great layout with good views. Overall one of those once every 6 months visit.
