Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
Best popular price course in the San Diego Area.
Out of towners pay a slight premium to play this track.
Good course in a valley like surroundings
WE wish for the price they charge they would have GPS system to make it a bit easier to see some hidden greens/pins.
If no GPS but a paper sourse lay out. We wanted to play canyon course but were denied the privilege.
Overall good place.
San Diego’s top 10; No.
Steele Canyon quietly restructured their pricing and raised their normal rates. The course layout is ok for the most part but some holes are just garbage and just not fun — wish I could skip around the 3 courses to just play certain holes. The staff have their “noses in the air” and really make the initial check-in feel like non-member are second class citizens. I’m willing to spend some cash to play but don’t talk down to me if I ask a question. It’s really hot in Rancho San Diego and zero breeze. If the forecast says 20% chance for showers, you can bet that it’s raining at the canyon. If you have “older folks” behind you, they have NO problem trying to drop darts within 15 feet of you and your buddies if someone duffs it from the tee and is taking their second shot; they’re firing off from the closest tees. Then, they ask to pass, you considerately say yes (for cordiality and for safety concerns) but then you have Bonnie & Clyde “Sunday Driving” and your round just added a solid 40 minutes with frustrating waits as granny tries to put from the fairway!
For the money I was spending to play there every Saturday for a few months I decided to take my money to Riverwalk and signed up for a membership! What a world of difference. Granted, there are some “patchy” areas but if you can “hit it hard” you CANNOT beat it. And playing rounds for $11... it’s the obvious choice for San Diego golf. I would rank value/quality like this: (SD Resident Card) Torrey & Balboa, (the reservations with discounts) Sycuan/Barona, then (GolfNow or call pro shop) Riverwalk. North County has many to choose from but for value/quality I would only go Golf Club of CA, or Crossings. I deleted Steele Canyon from my favorites in all GPS apps.
A solid course
I would say this course is a little overrated but definitely one of the top courses in the San Diego area. Greens are some of the best in the area. Just need some work on the fairways and a lot of work on the bunkers. Also some tips on the holes with blind shots wouldn't hurt either for first time players!
Overall a solid course with a great layout. Make sure you play the canyon course. I'd say it has the most character.
One of San Diego’s best! Steele Canyon is a “must play course”!
Steele Canyon is a challenging and exciting course that equally rewards good shots and punishes poor ones. The views from their numerous elevated tee boxes are dramatic and can be a distraction. Each of three 9 hole courses provide unique experiences that will bring you back for more. It’s worrh it to play more than once.—Cedric P.

Steele Canyon
I always enjoy a round of golf but this course is very disappointing. Overpriced, fairways in poor condition, pushy starter. Old stuffy golf atmosphere at a subpar course with high prices.
Excellent course
Great layout. Fairways a little dry due to the lack of rain and bumpy with recent aeration. One of my favorite courses when visiting San Diego.
One of the best in San diego
Steele canyon has been one of my favorite tracks in San Diego for many years. After having been away for two years and coming back recently, it was great to get back out to Steele canyon and see it in great shape. Pace of play was fantasticStaff was great and course conditions were great. Greens rolled very nicely. My only constructive comment is that sane in the bunkers was quite hard And made it pretty tricky getting out of.
Sure wish they would tell you what course you were paying for.
Great course with three 9 hole layouts, but one is about 4 notches below the other two. I have booked this on golfnow three times and every time it is a good nine and a not so good nine. Please just tell me what 2 9’s I am booking just like I get when I call and book.
Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately with 27 holes our tee sheet does vary daily with Member and group outings. Changes in our tee sheet don't always get reflected online. Your best bet is to book your online tee time and then give us a call and ask what courses you are booked on. Sometimes it is possible to accommodate course requests.
Great course
Beautiful layout with beautiful views and greens were perfect. Can’t wait to go back and play canyons course which was closed for aeration of greens
Steele Canyon is a great layout and beautiful course to play. Highly recommend it for anyone visiting San Diego and looking to play a new course. Price can be a little high, but if you are able to play at different times, then the prices can be more flexible.
Just OK
Nothing special. Winter conditions. Traps were not raked for a few days.
Favorite course in San Diego
We come to San Diego for a weeks golf vacation every year and always play Steele Canyon. Due to the time of year, the course wasn't at its best but in good shape for March. Love the layout and the views. Staff was friendly and cost on Golfnow was reasonable.
Scenic course
Staff was friendly and courteous. Course was arid with lots of tight lies but is expected after dry winter. Layout is challenging.
I am a bit thrown by your comments sir. Our course conditions are very good right now and looking at the price you paid that is not even available at our facility. Did you mistake our course for another?
