Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Disappointed
The course layout was Interesting however the course condition left a lot to be desired. The greens ran true and fast but the fairways were not over seeded. The Bermuda grass was dormant which meant tight lies.
Fast greens, dormant, and tight lies.
Bring your “A” game! The course is great if you can hit it down the middle. And have some knowledge of the greens. It is a very scenic layout. Just be prepared to be humbled if your a middle to high handicap. The golf carts were pretty rough and probably need updating. And Range balls are not included in your greens fee. The fairways were very dry and dormant. They 27 holes but one of them he nines was closed due to maintenance. All in all good would would play there again.
Worth the drive
Great variety of holes especially Canyon 9. Nice elevation changes and fast greens.A rangefinder would be a benefit for those of us who have not played the course.Use a course guide first time around.
Awesome layout/ superior staff
Enjoyed playing this layout. Found Jim, the starter, to be Soo helpful. And pro shop (Philipe?) Most polite and incredibly helpful. Wish other courses could learn from this golf model. As a 7hcp i found course challenging, fair & in good shape. Best value for my hard earned money. Touchè
Always a staple when I visit
I am from MA, and I've been coming out to San Diego since 1999. I discovered Steele Canyon early on, and have always liked it. I like the layout, which is a little tight, but it is desert golf. The Canyon nine is tighter than the Ranch nine, but the Ranch is longer. Conditions were pretty good, and the greens were a little too quick for me this early in the season at 11 on the stimp. My only complaint would be the pace. There was a group in front of me that had at least a couple holes open in front of them.
Beautiful and Challenging
Golfing at Steele Canyon is amazing, but very challenging, especially for retired snowbirds from the flat Canadian Prairies. The views are astonishing and the course was in great condition. Be sure to rent a cart as we did or you will regret it!
Great course
I was in town for farmers open and booked this course at the last minute. It was recommended to me and just as advertised it was beautiful. Course is great layout with many altitude changes and demanding if hoodctee shots as the fairways are narrowwith little room on each side before being lost to the rattle snakes. Tee time was for 7:00am played with one other and we finished 18 in under 4 hours. Would recommend to anyone who wants great views and a challenge. My suggestion is bring your “A” game
Good Place, Rigth Price
Course is always in good shape. This was a cold day which is a rarity in SD. Pace was alittle slow, but all in all was a good experience.
Starters are always on point with check in and carts.
It's Alright, Brah
I got to play the Canyon / Ranch 9's at Steele Canyon while in the area for work. The greens were great and certainly the best part of the course in my opinion. They rolled true without bumps and at a nice pace. The fairways were OK. Much of the grass seemed dormant, especially the rough surrounding some of the greens. I'm from the North East so I'm not completely sure how much of that is from the SoCal drought or time of year.
The layout is nice. There are some neat holes with fun elevation changes, but there are one or two head scratchers as well. Some holes felt like bumper bowling with big sloping sides that kick the ball back towards the fairway. I suppose that's good or bad depending on your game. While there was some trouble on the course, it's easy to take it out of play if you are accurate enough to stay on one side of a hole. Overall I thought it was pretty forgiving.
We paid a $69 twilight rate for non-residents. I was happy to get out somewhere on short notice while we are snowed in at home, but it was a little steep. Residents play for about $20 cheaper, and I feel that's the fair price point for this course. I would not pay the $100 plus for a morning tee time.
A very fun course
A very cool course. They utilize the terrain magnificently and many of the holes are just so unique and fun. Play it with someone who knows it though. Tricky layout
Scenic course - friendly/helpful staff.
The course is an interesting 27 hole layout with really nice greens. Lots of variation in length. Holes meander through the canyon and no two holes are side by side. Fairways are in good shape considering the lack of rain recently. Staff was very welcoming and helpful. Played on a Hot Time rate which was a very fair price but probably wouldn’t pay the “rack rate” that I heard was significantly higher. I would play it again and recommend it to friends.
COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE
ONLY 2 DAYS AFTER THE RAINS AND WIND BUT COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE.
Hi Pat...yes the Bermuda grass does go dormant in the winter. You will find many courses in San Diego no longer over-seed. After a week of 75+ degrees and sunny with some green grass coming in the grass got shocked when all of a sudden San Diego was hit with a cold spell. There have been 5 consecutive days of frost and the grass lost some of its color and fluff. It still plays nice and true though, and helps get some extra roll on tee shots!
