Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Tough course, beautiful.
First time playing this course. Very impressed with the course conditions and views. A very challenging course that will test every aspect of your game. Not much rollout in the fairways and greens were fast, but fair. Green fees were reasonable for this level of course. Got stuck behind a slow foursome, but finished in about 4 1/2 hours. If you are looking for a beautiful and tough course, try this one.

Fun Course - Will Be Back
Played Ranch-Vineyards for the first time. Pro-shop and on-course customer service were excellent and course conditions were exceptional. The recent rains in the area appear to have brought out the wild flowers which made for a stunning backdrop for the round. Greens ran fast and true and fairways and tees boxes were well maintained. I preferred Ranch over Vineyards only because I prefer elevation changes. Only words of advise would be to not challenge the water features as they are longer than they appear and are sloped to capture errant shots. :-( Will definitely play again when I return to the area.

Nice course but would rather play a little later in the year. Fairways dry but in good shape need watered.

Nice course..... but
The canyon 9 was very nice. Great views from the tee boxes and in good condition, however the ranch 9 was not nice at all. Conditions were very dry. Not sure if that 9 is irrigated. No nice views at all. Overall I'd have to say a little overpriced and we had the hit deal price.
I am sorry you did not find the Ranch course enjoyable. We did just do some spring maintenance to it that week so it may have been a bit rugged, but overall the comments on it have been positive. We have our maintenance dates posted online, in our golf shop and try to have our staff communicate with all of our guests but some may slip thru the cracks. Again I apologize if you were not informed of these conditions and hope you will join us again.
Enjoyed the round. Course was challenging but fun to play. Played with discounted green fees so value was very good. Would definitely play again.

Thank you for joining us at Steele Canyon last week. Despite your round being just over 4.5 hours it sounded like you still had a good time when speaking with you on the phone. Unfortunately on a busy day with only 18 holes open when 1 group falls behind a bit it is difficult to get everyone caught back up, despite our Player Assistant's best efforts. We do pride ourselves with the daily pace of play routinely being 4-4.5 hours or less and monitor it as best we can. We hope to see you out here golfing again soon.
very nice layout with beautiful and fast greens
the canyon/ranch nines make for a very fun and challenging round. nice balance of uphill/downhill, dogleg left and right holes. greens are a bit smaller than average without any severe breaks or tiers; very smooth and fast that roll beautiful, only a few greens have protective bunkers, which makes iron play a bit easier.
the vineyard nine is shorter and tight with more houses and environmentally sensitive areas that are in play on a number of holes. I would skip this nine if the others are available.
Worth the drive
Enjoyed the golf course, very playable with ample driving areas. Good par threes and excellent course conditions . I am a low handicap player and would play this golf course again.

Fun tricky course
Had a great time playing course. Greens were great but very severe on some holes on canyon nine. Bunkers were rough but probably due to heavy rains. Would play again at hot deal rate

Thank you for joining us and I am sorry you felt the course was dry. We did cut back on watering this week slightly as we were expected to get an inch of rain.
