Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Interesting Layout
Had a great day. Course is extremely challenging and you need to make sure you understand the layout of each hole or you will be in for a surprise. Played the Canyon and Ranch Nines and both nines, both superb layouts that challenge your strategic planning. Greens were perfect
Not sure how this course merits 4 stars
I am visiting San Diego and could not get onto Torry Pines so I google searched courses to play in the San Diego area. Steele Canyon got four stars and was highly regarded by other players so I decided to give it a try. Boy am I sorry I did. First of all there is a junior tournament there tomorrow so the course has lots of junior players practicing there. Should not be a problem except that my group was a junior player (he was quite good) and his uncle who insisted playing the back tees with is nephew but who should really be playing the red tees as he couldn't get off the tee to save his life. Also in our group and walking along was his mother and father. The kid hit several balls on every tee we played together and then on hole three we were joined by a college coach who I presume was recruiting the kid. And our twosome was part of this circus. Helpful hint: if you want to send out groups like this don't pair them up with two guys on vacation and trying to have a good time. We left them on a par three after the kid hit three balls off the tee and Uncle Leo hit one out of play. We skipped ahead of the group in front of this craziness and ended up playing at a pretty nice pace. So how was the course? I'd give it a C grade at best. I would never play here again even if it was free. We all have choices. If you are thinking about Steele Canyon I would think again and pick something else.
Great Experience!
First time to the San Diego area, the only course I knew about was Torrey Pines. And doesn't everyone? As much as I would like to play there, as a Canadian, $270 USD amounts to about $4,000,000 CDN (give or take a zero). So, I looked into other places. After some poking about, I picked Steel Canyon. It was a great great choice. It wasn't busy, so I ended up playing alone, which on a new course can be a little iffy. But Mr. Player has created a nice layout that allows you to see most of the holes without any blind shots. Lots of room for safe play, yet lots of opportunity to go for broke. The course is was in excellent shape and the greems rolled true. Couldn't blame missed putts on the greens. Finished 18 holes in 2 hrs 15 min. Weather was perfect, vacation day, had a great round. What more can someone ask for? Oh yeah, a carbon copy tomorrow!
Amazing golf course
Three different 9 hole sections makes for great variety. The landscape vistas are siimply incredible.
If you like to hit off of elevated tees, you are in for a treat.
Some very challenging tee shots for men with the womens tees set at a more reasonable placement.
A must play course.
Nice layout
Played the round in a little less than 4 hrs after teeing off at 8:30. Layout was challenging but fair. Wide fairways but very fast greens with no flat areas. Course was a little dry with some patchy areas and sand in traps was very coarse and hard. Would definitely play it again. Great vistas on the Canyon 9 with lots of elevation changes.
Looking great!
Played as a solo and there was very few people on the course. The fairways are in fantastic shape following over-seeding. The tee boxes were a little bit fluffy but level. I played Canyon/Ranch which are my two favorite nines. Only complaint was the sprinklers were on for a few holes, even after 8am. For the price, this is my favorite course to play in San Diego.
Customer Service Lacking
Course was in very good shape. Check in was easy but not very helpful as there are 3 nines and we had no idea which 2 we were to play. Only saw the beverage cart once on ninth hole as she was leaving our nine to go to one of the others. Greens were in great shape just on the quick side. No attempt to assist with cleaning clubs at end of round. Not a bad day, just could have been better?
Joe,
I am sorry for the lack of attention you received when you joined us the other day, it seems like it was a perfect storm with the timing. Your tee time was during a shift change so you were mistakenly overlooked and you finished around the same time as a large tournament group so the staff was busy elsewhere. Again, sorry for our oversight, we look forward to seeing you again.
Very enjoyable round
This was recommended to me by locals, so I decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint.
Course was in very good shape, especially with the lack of rain. Greens rolled true and were consistent speeds. Pace of play was excellent and was not very busy.
Setting and scenery were beautiful; there are 3 - 9 hole courses with each having a distinct flavor.
Staff very friendly and the bar/restaurant was busy;.they were pleased to offer me a soft drink to go.
Steele Canyon, and hills
Nice course but extreme elevation changes that made it less enjoyable for me - just personal preference. Perhaps the 5+ minute waits on tees ruined the round for us. 3-4 groups on most holes made it difficult to get a good pace of play.
Mr. Sheriff,
I am sorry you felt that you were waiting for extended periods of time on each hole. Unfortunately that is usually the case when you go off early as a single with a rider and not with the rest of the group that you were originally paired with. I am sure you still played in well under 4 hours, but again as a single it definitely feels longer.
A truly challenging Golf Course
Great Golfing experience.
Best value in San Diego County
Beautiful scenery
Challenging
Course started a shotgun tournament in the middle of our round
In the middle of our round the course decided it was a good idea to schedule a large shotgun tournament somewhere in the beginning of our round. We were shocked to see 2+ foursomes waiting on every tee. It took 25 minutes to play every hole. Decided to quit the round and demand our money back. Don't understand the decision to do this however I chalked this up to poor course management.
I am sorry your round was disrupted by a large tournament outing, unfortunately when you book online tee times a golf shop attendant is not able to tell you the details of the day as when you call to book a tee time. There was an unfortunate circumstance with the event starting late because of a mishap with the bus charter service. However, we did take it upon ourselves to have our course marshall go out and inform the golfers on the course that rain checks or refunds would be issued to those already on the course effected by it. To say you demanded your money back is a bit extreme as it was actually offered. We had other groups still finish their round in 4.5 - 5 hours despite this hiccup. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, we hope to have you out and visit us again.
Good challenge
Lots of elevation changes and sloping fairways that reward well placed shots. Mostly wide fairways, tighter on the short 4's, good speedy greens
Spectacular!
What a great course! Conditions were perfect!
A MUST PLAY !
Originally tried to get on Torrey but left too late to get a suitable slot .
So after researching other local courses plumped for Steele Canyon and was not disappointed .
Have played similar courses to Torrey in NZ where I live ( Kauri Cliffs , Cape Kidnappers ) but never played a course like Steele Canyon was unique and memorable .
Stunning layout , scenery , if you like elevated tees your in for a treat .
12 Handicapper , played off white tees and played to handicap , course plays relatively short off whites and while challenging in places ( small undulating greens ) did not consider it difficult .
Only criticism hence 4 stars not 5 was the pitch marks on the greens which is a shame because the greens run very true if you can find an area without pitch marks , a member commented to me it was down to lazy Californian golfers which is a poor show .
That a side this is ` must play ` course and offers fantastic value for money as well .
Hope my review helps , have a good game !
Cheers
Mike
Challenging but fun
The elevation changes were challenging for a Midwestern golfer but I had fun and had to used all my skills to play this course. I had a good time with a fun twosome they put me with.
Awesome
The views from some of the elated greens were worth the price all by itself. The course was a little tight at times but all in all a great layout.
Steele Canyon one of the best
Steele is one of the best courses around.
Beautiful course, wonderful standing on top of a tee box that towers hundreds of feet above the fairway with great views.
Very challanging course!
Good round of golf, very challanging couse, hot on summer!
Golfing
Lot of the green was narrow because of the drought conditions in San Diego other ThatI had a overall great experience
Mr. Aiello I am sorry your experience at Steele Canyon was unsatisfactory, unfortunately when you book tee times online you do not get to speak with an actual representative of the golf course who can inform you of the day/week events. Also when you show up with less players than originally booked you will find that every course pairs up according to a first come first serve wait list, it is not fair to pick and choose who gets paired up with whom, especially when it is a very busy day. Again I am sorry the course did not live up to your expectations, perhaps your experience was tainted by your initial pairing as many find Steele Canyon to be a Top 5 destination in San Diego.
