Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
Fantastic Course
Fantastic course. My buddies and I try to get out every other Monday morning close to sunrise to play. It's either Sycuan or Steele. You can't go wrong with either. Lately we've been playing Steele more because of the rate. It's an unbelievable value. Canyon plays harder for me but with three 9's, it is definitely a great place for all abilities.
The guys in the pro shop, marshals and the starters are always accommodating.
Weekends can get crazy. I played for the first time in the afternoon this past Sunday. Never again. It was a bloodbath. I was late for my time and there were no carts so I was kindly driven to the second hole by the marshal to meet the rest of the players in my time slot.
Slow day. We waited at every hole for 15 minutes not because people were playing slow just from being backed up by 2 groups at each tee box. No exaggeration. I stopped at the turn and called it a day.
Still love the course, but you'll never catch me there on a Sunday again.
Reminder to all...SC can be tough so tee it up at the correct box for your level of play.

Canyon/ ranch course
Love the course but 5 1/2 hrs to play 18 not on. ,! Where is your Marshall?
Great Southern Cal course
Played it many times and still like it the best of any southern Cal courses. A real challenge
Tough course, drought hurts
This is a tough track, made harder by drought. I thought they did all they could under the circumstances but I felt like I was playing off hardpan a lot of shots. I enjoyed the layout and I'd like to play it again.
Favorite Course
Steele Canyon is my favorite course in San Diego, all 3 course are fantastic. The staff are very personable, while professional. Course and facility conditions are that of a prestigious country club, with excellent food.
I would recommend this course to anyone.
Kapaluaesque
I liked the three nines layout and the elevated tees. Solid greens and some gamble shots were needed to score.
Drought hurts even the best courses
I have played a lot of course over the last few weeks in all areas of the county.
This course was in the best condition of all of those. The greens are great, note Meadow was just punched so only two nines open. This means it might be slow on the weekends.
The fairways were still green a good divot can be found unlike other hard packets tracts.
That said event the best courses are hurt by the drought.
This course will challenge your play.
This course is very well kept considering it's up in the hills of East County where it's usually very dry and warm. This course will test your ability of play nearly every single hole. Distance here is very deceiving as well. Overall though, I will continue to go back.
Great course (Ranch/Canyon 9's)
Best golf course in southern San Diego county!
Very friendly & professional staff!
p.s. Make sure your golf cart brakes work. Especially if you are playing the Canyon & Ranch courses :-)

great layout
I thought the course layout used the natural terain very well. I also rhought the greens were excellent. ...very fast and true.would play again when I am in the area ... only suggestion is the cost of rental clubs was wa to high in my opinion
Perfect Day!
This was my first time golfing at Steele Canyon, and it was amazing. It was a belated birthday present for my mom, and we had a wonderful day. The course was filled with breathtaking views, and the weather was superb. The course is challenging, but not overwhelming at all. I was amazed at the high quality of every hole, and just the overall maintenance of the facility. Hands down, the nicest course I have played!
Great Experience
My son Andy and I had a great day as always whenever we play at Steele Canyon. It is challenging and a lot of fun. Canyon/Ranch seems to be our favorite 18 holes.
Only negative is that there is no "on course marshal" to monitor slow players. Can't believe guys still "mark" one-footers instead of holing out.
Will be back again soon.
P.S. Management should consider adding steps to greens which don't have any right now. That would be much easier for senior players.
Very challenging
Played canyon and ranch. Greens were quick and the course was very challenging. Change in elevation created conditions for a long day but the picturesque views quickly erased the ill thoughts of not scoring well. Food was excellent and the cart girl was timely. The only set back was that the cart attendants were chatting at the cart barn when we finished our round creating needless walking back up to the bar. Overall a great day and reasonable round at a discounted cost
Great time!
I took my Dad to play here last week while he was visiting us. We had a great time! The course was in great shape. The members are very friendly as well, Steele Canyon will def be a place we return when my Dad comes into town!
One of the better courses in San Diego
first time playing here. Staff was very friendly right from the beginning.
Driving range was on matts which I really don't like, especially when there is plenty of grass to hit on.
Pretty good chipping area. The chippy no green was I excellent condition so I didn't need to pack up and move to the putting green to warm up.
Course plays tough for a first timer. Played with a couple of locals so that was helpful.
Tee to green condition was excellent. Around the tee boxes was a little ragged. But that's nitpicking.
Thought the $41 deal was perfect. I'll play often for that price.
Beautiful course
Staff seems unhappy with their job. This course is beautiful but needs some attention on the greens.
first time long time
Played this course many times and most courses in San diego. You can't beat the bang for your buck factor. Always a great experience. These people know how to run a golf course.
Great challenging course
As always Steele Canyon is a great course that challenges all levels. Conditions are great, greens are fast and true with challenging pin placement.
favorite course
This has become our main once a month course. Played it many times and still so enjoyable.
