Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard
About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
SD golf
Very friendly. Obviously they need water. Enjoyed the ranch 9 more then canyon 9. I don't get the excessive penalties that you pay if you are a non resident . Not just this course, but every course just sticks it to you. Where does all that extra money go???
lots of slow players
Course probably used to be really nice but needs water and lawn care
Too many players out there acting like pros shooting yardage at every hole, then swinging for triple
Disappointed , would only play if I could get a good rate and on then if all the pros speed up there play
Not s beginners course, tough layout if you don't hit it straight,
Great course
After finishing we were sorry that our vacation was ending and that we live clear across the continent. We would love to play this course many times. There were plenty of tees to choose from, elevated tees, long and short par 3's and great vistas. The conditions were good and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.
Challenging from the Blues
Course was in excellent shape, staff was friendly and greens were running at 11. My game at a 10.5 index didn't hold up to the 135 slope with the distance and wind. Nevertheless it was a fun outing and the couple we were paired with were very nice. I would certainly recommend playing Steele Canyon
pleasant Tuesday afternoon
Very friendly staff, got us off 20 min early. Marshall got a foursome to let us play through and after that finished our round in four hours. Greens in great shape, fairways suffering from the drought, but still in fair shape.
Great Course
We had nobody in front and nod
Body in back of us. The course was in wonderfull condition, got off on time and played a sub 4 hour round.
Changes in elevation.
Steele canyon is among the most beautiful and yet challenging courses in San Diego County. Breathtaking changes in elevation keep you entertained. The course was in great shape and the greens are FAST. Pace of play was quick and the staff was pleasant and helpful. We can't wait to play again. See you next week.
Interesting tract. All three nines playable & enjoyable
Very interesting course . Three nines are all playable and very enjoyable. Players of all ability will enjoy the test of golf. With five sets of tee boxes all can find a level of comfort. Greens are challenging and very fast.
GEM
Great course for the money, signature hole off a 100' cliff, mountain background
Not as nice as the website made it look
I have lived in San Diego for 4 years and I am still having a hard time getting used to paying high green fees for average at best courses. I'm from the northwest and you can get so much more for your money up there. Way too many times have I checked out beautiful pics of courses and when I arrive the conditions are mediocre. Steele canyon is another example of that.
Challenging and well maintained
This excellent course takes target golf to the next level
Slippery greens
Not a long course but danger lurks keep your putts around 29 and your total score should be good.
One of the best in San Diego
The course is a great challenge and a diverse layout. It is more fun the more times you play it. They did punch Meadow in February so it is like a Chinese Checkerboard but I'm sure it will be excellent once it seeds.
Fantastic Course
Fantastic course. My buddies and I try to get out every other Monday morning close to sunrise to play. It's either Sycuan or Steele. You can't go wrong with either. Lately we've been playing Steele more because of the rate. It's an unbelievable value. Canyon plays harder for me but with three 9's, it is definitely a great place for all abilities.
The guys in the pro shop, marshals and the starters are always accommodating.
Weekends can get crazy. I played for the first time in the afternoon this past Sunday. Never again. It was a bloodbath. I was late for my time and there were no carts so I was kindly driven to the second hole by the marshal to meet the rest of the players in my time slot.
Slow day. We waited at every hole for 15 minutes not because people were playing slow just from being backed up by 2 groups at each tee box. No exaggeration. I stopped at the turn and called it a day.
Still love the course, but you'll never catch me there on a Sunday again.
Reminder to all...SC can be tough so tee it up at the correct box for your level of play.

Canyon/ ranch course
Love the course but 5 1/2 hrs to play 18 not on. ,! Where is your Marshall?
Great Southern Cal course
Played it many times and still like it the best of any southern Cal courses. A real challenge
Tough course, drought hurts
This is a tough track, made harder by drought. I thought they did all they could under the circumstances but I felt like I was playing off hardpan a lot of shots. I enjoyed the layout and I'd like to play it again.
Favorite Course
Steele Canyon is my favorite course in San Diego, all 3 course are fantastic. The staff are very personable, while professional. Course and facility conditions are that of a prestigious country club, with excellent food.
I would recommend this course to anyone.
Kapaluaesque
I liked the three nines layout and the elevated tees. Solid greens and some gamble shots were needed to score.
I would recommend calling courses in advance of your booking to check about course conditions. This time of year many San Diego courses are going thru maintenance periods and may not be at their peak. All of our maintenance dates are posted directly on our website and as a 27 hole facility we do close each of our 9 holes for approximately 2 weeks at a time so they have a chance to recover before play resumes. I am sorry our course did not meet your extraordinary standards this time, if you would like to call or email and discuss another opportunity to join us I would be happy to try and accommodate you.
