Steele Canyon Golf Club - Ranch/Vineyard

About
Gary Player designed the 27 championship holes at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul. The holes are divided into three unique nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The nines, called Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch, each offer a different character but they are equally challenging. On the Ranch/Vineyard Course, golfers will be playing alongside free-roaming cattle that wander across the grassy meadows. There are a few elevation changes but they are not as dramatic as on the Canyon nine. Water hazards come into play several times and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with as well. The third hole on the Ranch nine is the signature hole at Steele Canyon. This tricky par 4 plays from an elevated tee that sits 175 feet above the fairway. It is made even tougher by the prevailing winds that blow from left to right.

Well worth the money
Try to play here at least once a month… a complicated drive from Scripps. The elevation changes are awesome. Extremely well cared for.
Greens and tees: none better.
Worth every penny
This course is hard
Grass was pretty mowed down (short) made the fairways really fast, lots of roll. Greens were super fast. Had a lot of fun.
If you are lucky you can get a clear round. Unlucky as we were and you are stuck with slow play from groups - ruin the satisfaction.
Try to play canyon and ranch . Meadow much less interesting and tighter fairways between houses! Not playing as well in the Autumn as in the Summer months. Some of the tee offs were less manicured and offset badly.
This is still one of my favourite Southern California courses.
Really fun to play
I don't get to San Diego often, but when i do I always try to look for someplace new to play that'll be great. This year, Steele Canyon was the pick, and the right pick. The layout of the course was great, not too wicked, and the elevation changes on the holes was stunning for someone that lives in flatland.
Definitely will give it a go again.
My golf round
The staff was very nice. I love the layout of this course. Piece of play was excellent. I would recommend this place to everyone.
I would play here again
My group and I had a good time playing canyon and ranch. The views on ranch were beautiful and challenging as well. We did notice that there was a lot of crew members doing work around the course. On the last couple of holes the gentleman mowing didn’t stop and just kept going on his marry way to cut the fairway. The greens on ranch were sanded but that weren’t that bad. All in all great course would play there again.
Canyon & Ranch
We enjoyed the Canyon course but not so much the Ranch 9. I’d be interested to play the Vineyard 9 to try it.
Day well spent
The only thing I can say is go play here! The layout is tremendous(Canyon/Vineyard 9's), the staff was GREAT, the conditions were really, really good, and it was a course I would absolutely play again if in the area. There were a few tight holes off of the tee, but overall you had room to miss a bit, the greens rolled very nicely, and the views were tremendous.
Challenging Topography and Course
Played for the first time. Found the course to be both challenging and interesting with each hole. Course does require player to have some reasonable accuracy with most shots. Several holes demand the ability to cross open space filled with dense brush. Basically you hit out of bounds or land in barranca the ball is lost.
The topography lead to many exciting holes that had elevation changes of 50 to 150 feet.
For people who enjoy nature we noticed at least 7 birds you typically do not see elsewhere including road runners.
Since we were all first timers there were a few holes that were hard to determine were the best location to shoot for.
All in all a very enjoyable course.
Amazing views
Elevated tee boxes, in the mountains, challenging course. Manny the starter was unbelievable. He welcomed us to the course, told us about the best holes . Friendly staff all over . 5 stars for Manny .
I was unhappy with the pairings
I had never played this course so I was very excited. The pro shop staff was very friendly and accommodating. What I was not happy about was that I had booked a single. Once I found out I was playing with a threesome instead of have two of them ride together and two single carts I was paired with their third. They all drank alcohol and I have been sober for three years. They also were on a very different playing level which meant I had to chase around their missed shots and poor playing etiquette. I smoke cigarettes and the guy they had riding with me was wearing a gallon of cologne. All in all it made for a poor round. Every other course I’ve ever played would have the single booked player in his own cart as he is not part of a booked theesome. No offense to my playing partners but a lot of my frustration would have been avoided if I was in my own cart! I’m very reluctant to book here again. The layout was great , some of the greens were chewed up very bad and tee boxes over grown. For the price I was definitely expecting more.
In My personal top 5 around San Diego
What you’d expect from a good course and some more. In good condition and well maintained.
Nice layout with a good degree of difficulty to accommodate any skill level.
