Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

8 minute tee times

8 minute tee times do not work for this course. 2 foursomes backed up on the tees the first two par threes. That is like playing a muni course and would not return.

Tough starting hole .

Overall I liked the course. The back nine is much better than the front. Has some nice par 4s and 5s and the holes are better defined.

The front in spots is so open your not sure where to hit.

Par threes are fairly long from the white tees.

Also annoying that the snack shack is closed at 2ish.

Nice layout with several bunkers and water features. Very playable with options for different tee shots and ability to score well. Greens a bit slow with some difficult pin locations

First time playing and we only played 12 holes.Course has lots of water and is fairly wide open. The greens were well bunkered. I thought the Bunkers needed some maintenance.

Some interesting holes with water in front of the greens .

Very expensive for a bad muni type experience

We had a 1:50 pm tee time. The starter told us it was packed and that the groups ahead of us were members and may bail after 9, they did not. We had to stop at 5:50 (4 hours) due to darkness with 5 holes still to play. We were told that groups go off every 8 minutes. We played Desert Willow and mission hills both in under 4 hours and were told they have 10 minutes between groups. Something else we noticed was that they let a twosome of members squeeze in behind us at the last minute.

We understand slow play. It’s not a big deal if the group is playing ready golf. We watched the groups ahead of us do the opposite. As they had older players they were not hitting it very far, again not a big deal. Repeatedly they would sit in their cart until the group ahead of them finished putting, slowly walked to their cart, put their clubs away and wrote down their score before driving away. The group ahead of us would then get out of their cart, walk to their ball, measure the distance, walk back to their cart, buy their laser away, walk back to their ball and then hit. They would then drive to the other side of the fairway, 20 yards away, and repeat the process. The two groups ahead of them wete doing the same thing (we had parallel fairways a few times. If you think this is brutal to read then you can imagine having to watch it on most holes.

The facilities might have been nice when the Rat Pack was around but now the concrete is dirty and cracked. The pro shop is sad.

My buddy refused to get s ball to put in his ball fisplay at home.

About average for Palm Springs

Course is in great shape, what staff they have is friendly, and lunch was good. All around nice facility. My only real concerns were a lack of staffing, no snack bar operations at the turn, no cart beverage service, no greeter to give directions. It was a very skeleton crew, which is surprising given it was a holiday week and high season. The pace of play was pretty slow. We were stroke for stroke behind the folks in front of us and they behind the next, etc. it made for long waits of two groups or more on every hole. If you are there for golf only, it meets the mark. If you are there for a special golf outing, there are probably better options at the same price point.

Desert Falls

Decent track, greens were good, fairways a little bare in places. A bit pricey for what you get. Happy to pay up elsewhere for better quality.
