Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 128 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Great track

The tract what great, greens true with decent speed. Totally recommend playing there but don’t expect much from the clubhouse. Very unfriendly and restaurant might as well be closed. Clubhouse very outdated and no help from staff. Poor clubhouse management is very obviously. Nothing to offer at pro shop. If you want to play a great track and that’s it, you’re in for a treat. Just don’t expect anything else. With that, I’ll play it again in a heartbeat because not interested in the rest. The great track is worth the negative of the rest

Pro shop lacking people skills and professionalism

The golf pro handling tee time check ins was unprofessional and dismissive.

There was no attempt of courtesy and the interaction felt unnecessarily rude.

The vibe he displayed indicated he did not enjoy his job.

When guests are paying to play, basics people skills and professionalism is expected.

The abrupt, unfriendly interaction by the Desert Falls golf pro, definitely reflects poorly on the course.

Great course, good value

Excellent front nine, last three holes killed me, but it's a fun course in very good shape.

Great course, empty clubhouse

This course is a great challenge with great views of the mountains, in good shape, unfortunately the clubhouse is deserted, even though the terrace is fabulous. Weird snack bar and restaurant hours. The owner doesn't seem to have an interest in its clubhouse

Great layout in good shape. Staff didn’t care if you were there or not. Snack shop was closed on the turn. Could be a great place, if they’d just pay attention to detail.

Very average course

Condition: managed for minimal maintenance attention. The entire course is watered including the rough. Greens are "wooly" meaning long and hence very slow relative to other courses nearby.

Layout: interesting but has many instances of blind shots. Local knowledge is required. A plus is that the housing is well back from the holes and probably rarely subject to fielding errant shots.

Staff: was inattentive in the clubhouse.

Recommendation: I would not recommend this to friends who are <10 index as it would not be challenging for them, even from the back tees. For me, it is unlikely that I will ever play here again as there are multitudes of better options in the valley.

Desert Falls

Pro Shop and Snack bar attendants great, first tee starter a bit tight and not very friendly to the guests at the course, I get it he feels invaded but it’s old when being treated this way, beware you won’t be getting a warm greeting, it’s unfortunate these starters forget their role.

Golf

Overall, this was a disappointing experience. There was no Marshall to greet us and explain the course idiosyncrasies. The course was poorly labelled and we were several times confused as to which way to proceed to a hole. Because of the hilly nature of the course ,it was difficult to see , visually, which way to go. No one told us where we could get water and the staff, generally, were not friendly,.There are no yardage markers which, when the flag was not easily visible, made play challenging in spite of using the course handbook. ( the 150 yard mark was helpful)

We liked the course and found it well maintained and interesting. However, the day was disappointing.

Desert Falls Palm Desert

Course and greens are in very nice condition. Sand traps are, however, less than great and are very hard packed.
