Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Fairways shaggy, greens slow

Felt like I was playing from the first cut when I was in the center of the fairways....overall, the course needs a better mowing strategy, including the greens..

Slow play

Desert falls is usually a fun course to play with a lot of forgiveness for beginner to intermediate golfers. Unfortunately my round took 5 1/2 hours. I believe they had a SCGA tournament there the following day and a lot of players were there to get a practice round in so thats why it took a while. Regardless, thats way too long for a round. Bunkers were in better shape then they have been in a while, although not great. Greens are really slow but overall good shape. Fairways were fine but overall the grass is a little patchy.

Overall course in good condition for early season greens were a bit slow.

Fairways generous rough was deep difficult to see balls and slowed play somewhat for players spraying the ball.

Overall enjoyable round lots of tee choices

Great layout

Fun layout, a little bit of everything. Greens were a little fuzzy but you got used to it. Rough is too long, spent way too much time looking for balls just off the fairway. A simple candy bar and snacks should be available at the pro shop for easy access at the turn. Using the restaurant turned into 15 min. Hassle.

Desert Falls golf

The greens & fairways were fine but you better hope you never end up in the rough.

I guess it costs too much to mow it but looking for your ball adds many minutes to the round.

Great track, to bad they dropped their Black tees!

Fun layout and elevation changes for a desert course is excellent and challenging. They dropped their Black tees and 7000 yrs layout which is too bad for us decent golfers but still a decent track. A bit of a cash grab not including range balls in green fees, like practically all courses in the area. Greens still growing in but rolled consistently, just super slow (maybe 6).

Quick round

Played in 3:20. Greens were good, fairways perfect but the rough was way too penal. Love the design but the housing around the course is spotty.
