About

Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6735 yards
Slope 135
Rating 73.4

The Galleon/Brigantine Course at Shipyard Golf Club combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses at the club. Galleon/Brigantine has a rating of 72.7, with a slope of 133 from the championship tees.

The original nine holes - Galleon - meander through large oak and tall pines. Accurate placement of approach shots into heavily guarded greens is necessary on this nine.

Designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1982, alligators sun themselves along the scenic, water hazard-filled Brigantine nine holes. With slight doglegs and well-placed bunkers, this golf course requires shot making and a good short game.

Ok course, rude staff and over priced

Starter and front desk employee were very rude for no reason at all. Decent course, not worth the price though.

Very nice but slow

Course and greens in wonderful condition but no ranger out to speed up the slow 6 hour round in front of us. We had to skip a hole to pass them on the back after a THREE HOUR front 9.

Zoysia = Winner

Considering the Hilton Head area and cost of golf that goes along with it, Shipyard’s fees are a positive. Shop staff was friendly and talkative while course staff was typical for most resort style courses.

Practice facilities are in need of care and overhaul. The range was sloppy and range balls were well below standard. Maintenance area adjacent to practice facilities seems out of place.

The winner(s) of the 27 hole layout was the zoysia greens. The complexes weren’t tricked out with turtle backs or multiple tiers around every corner. They ran true and were a delight to putt on.

Needs GPS

With all the water hazards and doglegs, course is almost impossible. Needs to upgrade to have the gps on the carts especially for out of towners.

Average vacation golf

Shipyard is your average Hilton Head golf course. Greens are probably the highlight with nice roll and true break. All other aspects (upkeep, layout etc) are average for this area. There are much better kept course that we experienced this trip (sea pines, palmetto dunes), but this course was in fine shape. Make sure someone in your group has a GPS set up on their phone as several holes are doglegs that the direction is not apparent off the tee.

The pro shop and starter are not particularly friendly. The starter gave a stern warning that as the first group off we should not play too FAST. While I understand the point of what could only be described as a lecture (course has 3 nines so no matter where you start you turn onto a course that is already full) it doesn't need to be so rude.

All that said, I would play this course again if the price was right as it is a well kept track and a pretty good layout.
