Brigantine/Clipper at Shipyard Golf Club

About
The Brigantine/Clipper Course at Shipyard Golf Club combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property for one of the more challenging tests on Hilton Head. Brigantine/Clipper has a rating of 73.5, with a slope of 135 from the championship tees.
Designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1982, alligators sun themselves along the scenic, water hazard-filled Brigantine nine holes. With slight doglegs and well-placed bunkers, this golf course requires shot making and a good short game.
With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. This George Cobb design requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Great round of golf!
This was a great course for this average golfer. I never felt pushed, and didn’t really have to wait. The course was well managed, well maintained and the staff was great. The pro shop was also well stocked.
Fun Solid Choice for Golf on Hilton Head
I would play Shipyard again. The entire staff was friendly, the course was fun and picturesque, and the course was in very good condition. I felt that I got my money’s worth and that I had chosen the right course to play near to where I was staying
Pace of play slow
Group in front of us very slow. Many course officials on course but no one enforced pace of play on them.
Nice Course
I have played this course before. It is a very good course. However, there has been a lot of rain on Hilton Head Island and the courses are very wet, cart path only. This course has 27 holes. One of the 9's was closed, it was under water.
However, based on past experience, I would recommend this course. Just wait for it to dry out.
Great setting for golf
Excellent setting among the palmettos, pines, and oaks with Spanish moss and lots of wildlife. Very serene. Greens, fairways, and tees, very good even with a ton of rain.
Tired Old Girl
Played Shipyard 35 years ago and it was a fabulous resort. Time has taken its toll here. Cart paths are crumbled and need resurfacing. Greens were punched and slow which is understandable.
I called the pro shop before booking to ask if they had a shower facility and towels. I was told yes by the individual answering my call. Unfortunately, when I arrived I found the showers were not functional and the water was even turned off.
The clubhouse looks old and worn. The entire facility needs a total remake.
Shipyard July 2025
The course was in excellent condition. The pace of play was good and the staff was very friendly. I would play there again.
Nice course
Reading other reviews we weren’t sure it would be nice. Played it once a couple years ago after we had read some bad reviews and we couldn’t believe how nice the course was. So we tried it again, and it was in perfect condition. Would play anytime I’m on the island
Need more bev cart servers.
Played 18 on a very hot day. No beverage cart sowed up after hole 1. Water stop at hole 6 was out of water.
However, Pub food and service afterwards was very good. Pace of play was slow - too many players on the course.
Shipyard - Excellent Course
Shipyard Golf Club is an excellent golf course and I enjoyed the round. I took my family to Hilton Head recently and unfortunately, Harbor Town was closed for grounds work - so I found a good rate in the late morning at Shipyard and the course had positive reviews. I am a 4 handicap, my wife plays 2-3x per year, and my kids are just starting to get into golf (ages 20 and 25). We LOVED the course and the layout was great for high-handicappers and the course was in great condition. We played in July and the tee boxes, fairways and roughs were in great, playable condition and very forgiving. The greens were slow (I expected due to the high temps), but made them very playable. Overall I would recommend this course!
The starter with the long hair was wildly unprofessional. He was cursing and cranky and it was a very weird start to our round. We went on a family trip to HH and booked two back to back tee times. The starter was trying to get us to go out early but we wanted to hit the range balls we paid for, gave us attitude and gave us a bucket of balls and told us “ill try to get you guys together then” He then without telling anyone sent us onto different 9’s and they would not let us connect with our other group. Too expensive for the way we were treated. Everywhere in hilton head has been a good experience except here. The other staff was great but the first worker set a real sour tone from the start.
Good experience
Pro shop staff was very accommodating. Course was in good shape. Pace of play was fine. Range balls included in price. Good beverage cart service on the course. Inside the bar was average but fine. Would return.
Great course!
First visit here and absolutely loved the conditions of the course, the scenery, and the friendly staff. Will definitely return
