Barony at Port Royal Golf Club

About
The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.
Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.
From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Barony course Photo submitted by JIMMYLAW77 on 01/10/2018
Powaway, putting green, everything is perfect.
There are several places in the Dallas area to play at this quality, but the green fee seems to be cheap here.
Great course!!!!
Played here last year and enjoyed it so much came back and played again. We also played Robbers Row in the same day. Did 36 and was perfect!! Both courses were a lot of fun to play!! I highly recommend coming here to this course and property.
Labor of love at Barony Port Royal
Challenging yet not impossible to play. Definitely recommend for all skill levels.
Just awesome
Staff was super friendly. The course was fairly wide open but unfortunately we caught a group on 15. So the waiting game started. But it only took about 1.15 to play 11 holes. We were on fire. The greens were punched maybe a week before I played.. But they rolled pretty good. Some spots were a bit wet due to heavy rain they have received lately. So the 90 rule was in effect. Didnt effect all the fun we had during the round. Andy windy windy so chose club wisely and leave you ego at the clubhouse.
Good course
Good course, value was I would say on par not bad but not great either so I guess worth the price. Conditions are above average/good no complaints. Tiny greens and kinda some goofy layout holes some would like some would not. Would definitely enjoy more playing it a second time. Short with lots of layups off tee. Just play smart and play for accuracy. No complaints enjoyed the round.
Back nine was great.
We got stuck behind a couple who apparently was trying golf for the first time. We stopped counting at 30 balls they dropped to rehit. I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve done it before but not at a public course with somebody right behind me and never 2,3,4 times in a row. Most courses that stack like this have marshals to monitor this kind of stuff. We saw nobody.
However, and to be fair, the course was in good shape and we played the back (after they quit) in a little over an hour. Even had an employee go grab us waters at the station which was slightly off-course because we were pushed for time. He brought them to us with cold towels. That part was incredible so i want to give the good with the bad! I’d absolutely play here again.
Amazing!
The course was beautiful and well-manicured. They had water machines with cups and ice at frequent stops on the course. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming back.
Got Stung by a Hive of Yellow Jackets
The course was in decent condition and everything fine enough until the third hole when I hit a beautiful tee shot that went 250ish right down the middle and so good it landed in the leaves and pine needles across the cart path.
Turns out it was close enough to a yellow jacket nest that as I'm standing over my ball with a five iron I start getting stung ultimately only five stings but dropped my club and got me on the run. My wife and kids are there playing with me and we all look over at my club lying there which has probably 200 yellow jackets swarming around it at this point and my ankle and legs with stings that feel like I just got hit with a golf club. So, my wife called the clubhouse from the phone number on the cart and asked to send someone out immediately to get me some first aid and help get the club. The person was extremely unprofessional and rude, had no clue what to do and said nothing he could do about it - said there was no one working there at that moment to help out. We were in disbelief. So, I called and again he said nothing he could do about it - didn't even say to keep moving forward (as there were groups behind us) and someone would be out there shortly to collect the club and bring it to us. Just simply said, not a thing in the world they could do about it and basically tough luck. So, we kept playing and three holes later the ranger(Jay) comes along with my club and the ball and was highly professional and excellent customer service - super nice and apologetic about the whole thing, asked me what kind of first aid I needed and went and got some hydrocortisone and ibuprofen to help out. We finished our round and that was that.
Hilton Head has a lot of wildlife(alligators, snakes, etc) on golf courses and if the front desk staff doesn't know what to do or who to call(no standard operating procedures in place), I don't want to be there. We played the Fazio course at palmetto dunes the next day and everything went great from start to finish - course was in great condition and everyone decent and professional.
Great Golf course. Well manucured and very forgiving conditions for a beginner golfer. But challenging for the avid golfer as well.
amazingly surprisingly good
we were not expecting much and played some great HHI courses all week and this was was in better condition than Trent Jones and $75 less. pace was awesome as well. will be back!
Struggling at Tees & Greens
Tee boxes and greens had crabgrass and needed some TLC. Good track for a ball striker with well protected bunkered greens. Played in 3:30 with 1 4 some letting us through and 2 some come up onus from nowhere letting them through. Heritage needs to do better at Barony at these rates.
upscale public course on HHI
expensive rate for 1100 tee time, $150 per, tee boxes not in great condition, no GPS in carts. look for a discount before playing
