Nice course, but watch out for weather
Nice course for summer, but not worth playing during winter season as the fairways will be full of rain fall and walking will require some extra skills to get out of muddy water.
terible winter course
This is rated as one of Oregon's best courses but sadly they don't seem to care in the winter. It's bad enough that nearly all the fairway shots plugged but it was also the case on most of the greens! Also the greens had not been swept so every putt left a tail stream of water. This course it not worth playing at any price in it's present condition.
Pumpkin Ridge (Ghost Creek)
2nd time here, played on a Golf Now Hot Deal for $50 including cart/range balls. Played the blues (6357/72.0/139) in 3.5 hours. Started off very overcast and drizzly but was partly cloudy and nice by the end of the round on a very calm, 65 degree afternoon. The course played long after rains several days earlier in the week. Both holes #9 & #18 are signature type holes, well over 400 yard par 4's with hazards to avoid off the tee, then lakes guarding the front and one side of the green. Beautiful course, very challenging layout, Not overly tight but if you get crooked more than a few yards in many places your ball is just gone. I felt comfortable with driver on the par 4's and par 5's, although on one I should have used an iron. I attribute the 139 slope from the blues to the thick rough, specifically the lost ball type native rough, the severity of the greens and especially the sight lines. Numerous holes have diagonal yellow hazards that run across the fairways, making accurate yardage measurements very important on club selection. Having diagonal yellow hazards running @ 60 or 70 degrees through numerous fairways is something most golfers rarely encounter, and here it is about every 3rd or 4th hole. The greens were still showing remnants of the aeration 3 weeks ago. They were medium speed and a little bumpy @ times, but generally putted well. They are big for the most part, undulating and you need to get the ball on the right tier of several greens, or it's a likely 3 putt. The sand traps were very well maintained with thick, fluffy sand and well trimmed around the lips. I rarely rate anything a 10, but these were a 10. The fairways were generally lush, you hardly got any roll today. The rough is thick and usually lush. It is punitive, you cannot hit longer clubs out of this stuff. The native areas are calf to knee deep, an almost sure lost ball or unplayable lie. The rough around the greens is very punitive. The tees were well maintained. The par 3 tee's were very well maintained, almost all divots fixed, very good to excellent overall. To me, great course, love the layout. However, this course still isn't worth the $90 - $125 they charge @ full rack rate to walk, but it is VERY well worth playing if you can get a deal.
Disappointing
Pumpkin Ridge is widely considered to be the premiere course in the Portland area and they charge accordingly. Because of that I was expecting to have a wonderful, and unique, experience. I was anticipating challenging holes, undulating greens, and a setting that's worthy of professional golf tournaments. I was expecting the "wow" factor. Surprisingly it wasn't even close.
The rough, just off the fairways, was so long that you literally had to search 10 minutes to find your ball; if you could at all. Now maybe they just hadn't mowed it since it was November, but the fairways were in great shape so it seemed like they planned it that way.
The greens were also in great shape, but they were nothing special. Mostly flat and not challenging at all.
The only yardage markers were on the cart paths, which are typically about 30-50 yards from the fairway making them useless, and then on the sprinkler heads as well. There were no 150 markers in the fairway on any hole. To me that's golf 101. Even the cheapest courses have clearly visible yardage markers.
Lastly, their pricing is outrageous. During peak season you can easily pay over $100 per round, which is a joke.
Nitpicking aside, this course simply isn't worth that kind of money. If you want challenging go to Great Blue or Camas Meadows to name a couple. You'll pay quite a bit less for either. For similar scenery you could practically go anywhere else; i.e. Broadmoor, Greenback, Tri-Mountain, etc.
I hate to say it, because I was really looking forward to playing this course, but I was very disappointed and I won't be going back.
Pretty Sloppy
This course is ranked higher than a number of courses in the top 100 that I have played. I cannot say I came away being more impressed with this course than pretty much all of the others that I had played that were also in the top 100.
Now this is mostly from a general feeling of how the course looked and a general feeling of how they could play in good conditions. Unfortunately when I played the course was pretty difficult to play.
The weather is starting to turn and as such most of the week was preceded with alot of rain. The weather while we were playing was a great. It was actually sunny and dry. Unfortunately most of the ground was over saturated and the rough appeared like it had not been cut in a while. The largest issue that I had during the day, outside of having so many super soft lies, was that finding your ball was a major chore. The course was littered with leaf foliage which obscured even good shots. Hitting the ball into the rough resulted in a 75% chance of never finding it again. The course was cart path only for riders, and Im not sure if that made things slower than they could have been.
I would love to play again in good conditions. I think even with the soft conditions had the foliage not been present and the rough been reasonable length it would have been much more playable. The day starts to get tiring when you start losing ball after ball with decent shots.
great play!!!!
Well manicured excellent condition. Rain season ...... Wear rain gear ...... Gotta be a 5+ in season .....will return. Visiting from sunshine state Fla loved the course
DOPE!
Awesome time, it rained for a majority of the round but we made the best of it. The consitancy of all the surface's during play was amazing. There was no difference in the greens when it was raining and not raining. Overall great!
Incredible course!
I really enjoyed the course...some great holes mixed with beautiful nature. Greens are pretty rough right now though. I look forward to my next visit!
Always fun, but a little dry
The course is almost always in great condition. I hadn't played there in a while. It's been a very dry summer here and the course was showing it. Lots of dry spots off the fairways, which is fine. More dry spots than I've witnessed ON the fairways, though. Even some on the greens, although they were really pretty good and true. I really blame the dryness more on the hot summer than on the greenskeeping crew.
Also the greens were hard to read for me. Lots of putts where I had no clue on break, and even a couple where I completely read the wrong direction. More play here would help.
Overall a great experience, and I got a GolfNow Hot Deal!
At its Peak in the Summer
For years I've played Pumpkin Ridge occasionally in the fall or spring, the course does not hold up well in wet conditions. This was my first time playing in peak August conditions.
First and foremost the tee boxes, fairways and greens were in fantastic shape. The greens were especially true and firm.
The course itself can be difficult if you are errant off the tee, it's important to play smart on a lot of the holes. The course is also very walkable and getting out early means getting done in 3 hrs and 40 minutes.
Overall, the facilities are great, course is great, but it is a bit of a drive from Portland, and it's pricy in the peak times as well. Try to find a deal online if possible.
Best in Portland area
This course is ranked as one of the best in Portland area. Course condition was great, green was smooth and fast.
Poo
Not worth it. Supposed to be the best But it can't hold it's own against even mediocre courses. We saw one marshal whose sure we knew it was cart path only but none to make the pace faster than five hours.
challenging as usual
I had the chance to play this course, a once a year special occasion for me, yesterday. The weather worked out quite well inspite of a threat of rain earlier in the day. Greens, fairways and tees were in awesome shape. Rough was deep but playable. Overall a great day and at the $55.50(50% off) thru this site it was an outstanding value.
A Great Golf Experience
If you are in the area, play this course. Great design, good conditions and very friendly staff. Warning: this is a tough course. Several holes have approach shots where if you are a little off line you're looking at a double for sure. But if the weather is okay you'll enjoy a great day of golf.
Excellent Track !
From start to finish, this is a great golf experience. The Starter was a good fellow, sorry don't remember the name. He loaned his pull cart (all the course's pull carts were out) to one of the guys we were paired up with who's own pull cart had a flat tire. The course: fairways are generous enough, you can get a little crooked but don't get wild or the aforementioned rough will cost you strokes. The greens accepted well spun shots but were firm enough and rolled fast & true. There is not a scruffy patch of dirt anywhere on this course, it is in prime condition. The layout was interesting and memorable. And no more cart path only restriction. This is a walkable course, we had 36 to play that day so glad our rate included cart. So weekend play for under $100, jump on it and you won't be disappointed..they can ask $140 and get it. The new clubhouse appears near completion and will enhance the whole experience. This track lives up to it's championship heritage. Certainly will be more in the future. Thanks !
Great Course
The course showed no signs of the recent aerating. IN GREAT SHAPE. Got a good deal. We are looking at the $99 card for 55 and older. Seems like a good deal. A long course, got on most par 4 greens in three, so lots of par chances. Long par threes, on in two. Don't let the length scare you off. Some construction in the pro shop building, look as if the new pro shop will be top notch. If you end much past 5 PM good chance the grill will be closed, we just made it in time to get a drink and dinner. Nice beverage cart service. You will enjoy this course.
Great golf course.
The green were still healing from aeration but was still a great time. The rough around this course is no joke. Stay on the fairway haha. Great hole lay out as well
Pumpkin Ridge Punched
end of May - great weather - course had chemicals applied - all greens just punched and slow - wait will at least mid June if you want excellent conditions - $40 with cart made round acceptable - but certainly a disappointment compared to past outings
