Worst experience in 48 years of playing golf
My son and I traveled from LA area to Portland to play both Pumpkin Ridge and the Reserve. We had a 740 tee time at Pumpkin but when we arrived the computer system was down causing us to pay cash and not get off until 800. They were putting groups off both 1and 10 and we were paired with a twosome who had traveled from San Diego. It was very foggy but we played through it on the front 9. On 10 tee the marshall drives us and tells us we have to finish the back in 1 hr 30 min. The rushing was a problem with our entire 4some's game. On 14 the marshall returns and tells us to skip 14 and 17. We knew nothing about a tournament and were disgusted.
After the round we all went into the pro shop to ask for a refund only to be told that we knew about the tournamnet and they weren't going to do anything. The staff was dismissive and the lack of any interest or concern was palpable. They took our names and numbers and were told we woukd get a call to disccuss the matter. No one called.
Don't play here, for the money the Reserve is a much better round.
Pumpkin Ridge
First time playing here. Picked up Kviser from the airport fresh out of So Cal. We had lunch halfway to the course, then drove over and walked the blues (6386/72.0/139) in 4.5 hours on a prepaid GolfNow deal for $59.
Beautiful course, very challenging layout, not as tight as I expected. I hit one 3 iron and one 3 wood off the tee, otherwise I felt comfortable with driver on the par 4's and par 5's. #9 & #18 are both signature type holes. They are both well over 400 yard par 4's with lakes guarding the front and one side of the green. Numerous holes have diagonal yellow hazards that run across the fairways, making accurate yardage measurements very important on club selection. I attribute the 139 slope from the blues to the thick rough, specifically the lost ball type native rough, the severity of the greens and especially the sight lines... All the diagonal yellow hazards running @ 60 or 70 degrees through numerous fairways is something most golfers rarely encounter, and here it is about every 3rd or 4th hole.
The greens were firm, smooth, medium fast and putted well. They are big for the most part, undulating and you need to get the ball on the right tier of several greens, or it's a likely 3 putt. 9/10.
The sand traps were very well maintained with thick, fluffy sand and well trimmed around the lips. 9/10.
The fairways were mowed close, the ball really ran on several fairways. However, many had "hot spots" where the grass was discolored and obviously needed watering. You usually had good lies, not fluffy lies, but not tight either. 7/10.
The rough is thick and usually lush. It is punitive, you cannot hit longer clubs out of this stuff. The native areas are calf to knee deep, an almost sure lost ball or unplayable lie. The rough around the greens is very punitive. I rolled through 18 green 3 inches into the rough green side and could barely advance the ball onto the green for fear of getting too much ball out of the deep stuff and going into the lake just on the other side of the pin. 8/10.
The tees were well maintained, I liked the way the grass was cut close. Several had hot spots and a decent amount of divot damage, but were very good to excellent overall. 8/10.
To me, great course, loved the layout overall. However, this course still isn't worth the $90 - $125 they charge @ full rack rate to walk, but it is well worth playing if you can get a deal.
Very Nice Course..BUT
Everything went well until hole #10, where 3 groups were stacked up. This made the second nine play unbelievably slow. Two players of the foursome two groups in front of us decided to get something to eat and held up everyone behind them. I blame course management for this. The stack-up was clearly visible by the young men working the bag drop-off and club clean-off and they did nothing to intervene. It was plenty busy for a Monday, so a little course marshaling would have been appreciated. A very nice course, but the lack of interest on pace of play and attitude of staff that day was disappointing.
Excellent course
The greens were fast and TRUE. It was a great course to play and I would play again--at any given opportunity!
Course in excellent condition except for the signs
If signs to next tees and table-maps for each course near the tee-boxes were present I would give 5 stars.
Nice, well maintained course
The course was somewhat tight but did not seem to play at almost 6,400 yards as indicated on the scorecard. There was no one available to take our clubs at the bag drop upon arrival. I was charged an additional $32 for a cart because, I was told in the golf shop, the rate shown by Golf Now was for walking only but that was not disclosed on the GN webpage. Very disappointing.
Great Course and Very Enjoyable
I took a trip to Portland and was hoping to play some great golf with iconic Pacific Northwest pine trees and mountain views. Pumpkin Ridge turned out to be the perfect fit! The course was in excellent shape and the layout was superb. Every hole felt different and I could see myself playing there many times without getting bored. Greens were one of the highlights as they rolled true and fast. Despite elevation changes from hole to hole, the course was very easy to walk.
I highly recommend playing here if you are near the Portland area.
Indeed there are only two water dispensers on the course. Fortunately I always carry a water bottle so I can load up and drink at will.
Great vistas!
Beautiful course ! Staff was very friendly. We will definitely make a return trip!
Course great, experience just OK
Course was beautiful and in perfect shape but the overall experience was sub par. We mistakenly bought a walking rate at 2:50 pm. The course wanted $25 to get a cart (split the difference b/w rack and GolfNow.com rate) but we decided to walk anyway. Big mistake. We are used to water on every other hole. There are only 2 water fountains on the course, the drink machines either didn't work or only took exact change, and the beverage cart came by once (4:00 pm on the fourth hole) on an 85+ degree day. If I'm walking, water is a major issue, so this alone pretty much ruined the round by the back nine (which has some pretty significant elevation changes). Unless you walk a lot, go ahead and get the cart if it is hot. Very little relief from the sun here.
The course layout on the scorecard is worthless and there is no layout information at the tee box. Only a problem on a couple of holes but it would have been helpful. No information at all on greens or pin placements. This is so easy to do and it boggles the mind why it isn't printed on every scorecard. Maybe they just assume everyone just relies on rangefinders! The little creek that winds through is very cool. Yardages are well marked and appear to be accurate. Greens were in great shape, held approach shots well, and rolled true. I thought they were pretty fast. Sand traps were perfect. Lots of divots, probably b/c of so many walkers. As long as you hit the ball straight here, you will score. Only a couple of places where shaping the ball is required. Facilities were kind of ratty, with mats on the very small driving range. More like an upper end muni than a high end daily fee course.
Do not rely on Siri to get you here from the Willamette Valley!! Use the map on the website and trust it!
Overall, I can't say how this course stacks up to Portland area courses but it was double what we pay in Charlotte for a comparable course. I suspect that has a lot to do with why the parking lot was practically empty on a gorgeous July day.
Excellent course
Very difficult rough for the normal golfer but the fairways and greens were outstanding.
Course is excellant
very hot day slow pace no water on course except 1 location not very well shown cart girl was seen once per side even with a 5.5 hour round
This course is possibly the most well maintained public course in the area.
I like Pumpkin Ridge, my issue is the standard green fee's. If it wasn't for the twilight rate we would've been looking at around $110.00 a person. I know it's history, LPGA events, U.S. Amatuers etc.. but in comparison to other courses, particularly the ones I play in Northern California (see Darkhorse) It's a bit spendy to play on a consistant basis.
Great cap to a trip to Portland
We teed off at 7:00 on a Saturday, and there was only one group out in front of us. Beautiful course with mature trees and a pretty little creek running through almost every hole. The front nine gets pretty thick under the trees, so if you hook or slice, you will want to take a couple sleeves with you.
Back nine is more open, and errant tee shots are usually playable.
Staff was wonderful. We took a cab to the course and took our luggage as we were flying out after the round, and they let us leave our luggage at the pro-shop. I don't recommend cabbing, as it was $70 from downtown Portland.
I definitely want to visit this course again, and take my own clubs. Rentals were good, but the softer shafts made it difficult to hit the ball straight.
Great course. I will be back.
Fairways perfect; greens a bit trampled by afternoon.
Pumpkin Ridge is still one of the best courses in the state.
Great course, but needed work after a busy day
This is a great course with wonderful features - free range balls, large putting green, well laid out course that is challenging and not punishing (although some of the rough gave me a tough time, but that's my fault). However, when my son and I played at "twilight time" on Saturday at the end of Spring Break the course showed signs of wear. Some greens, especially the par 3s, looked like the surface of the moon. Even without the ball marks the greens were suprisingly bumpy. But I attribute that to the week and I certainly will be back.
Twilight, $30
We really enjoyed the afternoon. The course is well maintained, but a little soft because of recent rains and cool weather. We commented as we were near the end of the round, " Sure enjoy playing this course."
It is not your usual flat Portland area golf course. The changes in elevation and terrain were challenging and enjoyable.
I will definitely put this on my "to play" list!!
Great rate through Golf Now.
The course was in good shape considering the weather. The greens were a bit slow, but very true. When I got the right speed the ball tracked straight to the hole. The rough was rough! Deep, thick and wet. I missed a fairway by two paces and never saw the ball again. I guess there's a lesson there.
Great when dry
I have had now played this course in dry and wet conditions and have to say there is a huge difference . Played yesterday ( hadnt rained heavy for a few days ) if your shot went off the fairway then you had a 80% chance of it being lost/plugged due to the swamp like conditions. It can be seen that the ground staff are doing a lot to try and prevent this but I think the course build just doesnt allow fro water to drain , also like wise on a large number of fairways . One thing that has to be said though is the greens were in great condition , this shows that where possible the staff are working hard to keep this course playable. I also played this in the summer and it was a plesaure to play , tough but fair and stunning setting and well maintained.
Pro Shop staff yesterday were friendly and good to chat to , very helpful
