Rating 71.8

Cave Creek Golf Course is Phoenix's most popular municipal course, seeing about 100,000 rounds yearly. In 1983, Cave Creek began as a landfill reclamation project. It's a sort of pioneer in environmental design, proving similar spots can find environmentally friendly uses. It's open dawn to dusk, year-round.

Eighteen holes of par-72 golf take golfers over 6,732 yards on the Cave Creek Golf Course, kicking off on the par-4 first hole, which measures 363 yards from the blue tees, before things get long on the second hole, which measures 510 yards from the blue tees. That's just one of four long holes, with the sixth hole measuring 532 yards from the blue tees, the 11th coming in at 521 yards from the blue tees, and the sixth having a distance of 518 yards from the blue tees. The round concludes after a suggested playing time of four hours and 10 minutes on the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 388 yards from the blue tees.

The city of Phoenix has contracted with several hotel chains to offer stay-and-play packages for golfers at the Cave Creek Golf Course and other municipal tracks.

Great course for the money

We play this course about once a month, and it keeps challenging us every time. The dry creek that runs through the course will swallow balls if your accuracy is off, and if you are not familiar with the course, the hidden water features are always a surprise. As for the greens, they are very fast in the late morning and early afternoon, but as soon as the sun drops behind the trees, the moisture works its way to the surface, and they slow down. Just be prepared for a sudden change in green speeds mid-round.

Quality muni

Not as good as Aguila, but this is a solid muni and a more fun track than Dobson or Kenny Mac.

Good shape for a Muni

The course is in fairly good condition. Most of the fairways are filled in nicely with a few bare spots, but not terrible. The greens vary in condition and pace. Some are in good condition and roll smoothly others are a bit bare and are bumpy. The pace from one green to another varied also. Being that this is a Muni course with a large amount of golfers of varying skills and etiquette the course is surprisingly good shape. The carts which are beat up have GPS installed in them. Do not shut down your cart for any reason as the GPS reboots and it takes a long while to start up again. When the GPS is not on line the cart will not move forward. The guy who was teamed up with us found out the hard way.

Play this course

Very challenging course and we will be back to play it again. There is nothing flat about this course so your shots need to be fairly accurate. Definitely stay below the hole when chipping on the green. We enjoyed this level of golfing. Don't let the front nine tease you because there is water on the back nine. Overall we loved this place.

Slow going

Did an afternoon tee time and had to quit after 9 holes due to backed up play. Fairway and greens were fine.

No marshall to get people going. Shouldn’t take 5-6 hours for a round.

Starter was very nice. Only interaction with staff.

Bumpy ride!

Tees, Greens, Fairways and bunkers were good. Anything off that, it’s hit or miss and the bumpiest ride ever! But well worth playing.
