This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Memorable

Probably the most memorable course you will play. Every hole has a unique challenge that you must overcome to score well. Bailout zones are really bailouts, as shots from there are much harder than from “position A”, but you wont incur the penalty strokes from hitting it in the hazards.

Very, very fun

Great challenge of golf

The course is in great condition and presents challenges from whatever tees you choose.

Greens were quite slow but all in all a good experience.

My favorite course anywhere

I have been fortunate to play the stadium course probably 20 times. My first time was in 1996 and i paid $210. I’ve never paid that much since. Ive played over 500 different course, and in every state except Alaska and this is my favorite course, but it is HARD. Im sorry to admit, maybe too hard for me these days. I have gone from the black tees (in 1996) to the blues and now the whites and it just seems hard, where it used to be fun.

Now for the good. On pretty much every hole you are required to hit the correct shot into the right position. What may appear to be safe bailout places are safe, but not easy to recover from (better than water i suppose), Holes 5,6,7 and 9 are memorable and difficult. (I remember hitting 1 iron from the back tees and making birdie on 6 in 1996, now its driver from the whites.). 5 in particular, called double trouble, is aptly named. I think we played there about a dozen times before my friend played without losing a ball in the water (I lost 2 this time).

Every hole on the back is memorable, with 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18 being my favorites.

If your a good player its is a great challenge. If you’re an average player, you will hit some memorable shots. If you’re a hacker, bring lots and lots of golf balls.

Slow pace

We were sent out 5 minutes early in a 3 some. On hole 3 we started playing about 20 minute holes because it was so backed up Only got through 14 holes before dark and started at 1:15. Loved the challenging course but paid way too much to sit on every shot.

Alert on website

There should’ve been an alert warning “cart path only for overseeding”! Hard course for our skill level but not being able to drive to where our ball landed made the round very challenging!!!

Boring, bad condition

Not a great course, it is flat/boring, dated and ugly except for a few memorable holes. In bad shape compared to other premium courses in the area, with brown grass in many areas. I imagine the only reason they host the Q school here is, the giant range complex and the course is obviously very difficult from the tips, with lots of water. I would only play it again if someone else was paying.

A great day at PGA West

Was lucky enough to snag a late-afternoon tee time on a hot deal. Super impressed with the course conditioning coming out of overseed. Teeboxes were mint, fairways were great, as were the greens despite being a bit on the slow slide. Friendly staff abound, too! Most important, pace was incredibly quick (~4hrs) and we managed to squeeze in 18 as the sun was setting.
