This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Awesome Experience

The course was immaculate! A great experience to end our annual golf trip. Our tee time was at 3pm so tough to squeeze in all 18 holes, but we did it! Great selection of merchandise in the proshop. The laser engraved bag tag is the way to go!

A real treat

Obviously, a great course. Staff was very friendly and expedient. Could’ve used a ranger on the course to speak people up, and definitely have a water station or two. Bring your own water as you are in the desert.

Really slow round … great greens

Course is in great shape; greens were fantastic and quick! Pace of play … bring a book. Make sure to book your time NO LATER than 1:30/1:45 if you want to finish in the daylight. Course is booked (which is good), but the play is slow (course wants a 4.5 hour round)… it was a 5 hour 10 min round on Monday.

Such SLOW Pace

Sadly the pace of play ruined what should have been a quality experience at one of my favourite courses in the area. Front side took 2 1/2 hours to play! Waiting on every tee box. Back 9 slightly better at 2:15 hrs. Past times playing here marshalls did a much better job with pace of play.

Needs gps and pin placement awareness

We love some of the other PGA west courses we’ve played, such as the Nicholas, Norman and Mountain course, but were a little disappointed in the Stadium course. Why are there no GPS systems in the cart? Why was there no explanation on pin placement so you know if it’s in front middle or back of green? All flags were white and we saw nothing on the scorecard indicating anything about pin placement. They were definitely not all middle, all front, or all back. One time at the Nicholas course, they told us that it was going to be front, then middle then back throughout the course. We got no such instruction from the starter on this day. Fortunately, we got a discounted price because we played later in the day, but for the price they charge for playing earlier, you should definitely have GPS in your carts and pin placement information available.

PGA WEST PETE DYE STADIUM COURSE

Fortunately, using my Golf Pass membership, the price I paid was reasonable. Otherwise, I didn’t feel the course was worth it. Relatively wide open, ver hilly, fair shape., slow pace of play. I was disappointed that the driving range was closed. I find it very helpful when you can practice before playing. The other golfers I played with were shocked when I told them what I paid. I was lucky enough to get a “ hot deal”, so price I paid was much less than my playing partners. Overall, I would not play it again, since there are many more courses that are more suitable to my game.
