About
This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Prepare for a pounding
Tough course to be sure, although I was only in one bunker all day, unlike my buddies.
Greens were quote slow (sign at starter said 10.4 but there was no way they were over 9). But it was also super hot out, so understand them watering the crap out of them.
No halfway hut (noted in the pro shop), but we only saw the beverage cart once, which was not enough.
Course in mostly good shape, but some areas were a little rough around the edges.
Overall, would still recommend, just not at full price.

Way too expensive for the quality of the course, will not play again.

Deserve better
For a class A course to have hard dirt sand traps it tainted the whole experience. Playing 5 courses this week in the desert, PGA West was the most expensive and least enjoyable

Fun test
Each hole presents a unique challenge that flows together into a seamless whole. #16-18 is one of the better finishes in golf.

PGA West Stadium Course
Driving range closed 10 mins prior to our arrival and the employee at the pro shop showed no remorse or apology for the range being closed, even though “range balls are provided” when I purchased the tee time. Pace of play was a little slow and the group behind us hit into us twice, once on a par 3 (they were teenagers). We didn’t get to finish the last two holes due to darkness, including the famed #17 island hole, there was a six’em on the green when we reached the tee box. When we mentioned the six’em to the marshall, he laughed it off. So overall, beautiful course but get a tee time earlier than 3 PM to finish all 18.

The devil you expect
Unfortunately it was a cool and very very windy day. The bad caroms into bunkers was expected on a Dye course the only real negative besides the weather were bunker conditions— very pebbly and as much dirt as sand. The greens were a bit slow but I think that’s a pace of play issue

Way too expensive at the rack rate. Course is dried out and not as well attended to. At $125 twilight rate good course. Very challenging and rewarding when you hit it well. Brutally punishing when you do not. I played through a wind storm - not recommended.

Course was great just avoid the snack bars
Course was overall pretty nice, if you plan on going take your own food however. Played here a hand full of times and every time I’ve got a hot dog or a sandwich from the snack bar I’ve gotten very ill
