This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

What happened?

Not sure what happened to this place but 14 out of 18 greens have no grass on them, and basically look dead. I’ve never seen this before at such a prestigious place. I heard from the pro shop they ruined the punching and are going to shut down the stadium in hopes of saving the greens.

Course Needs Help

Something must be wrong with the grass because all the greens and many areas on the fairways are in terrible condition. The greens are almost unplayable . I hope Theo can be fixed. I should have been told about the course conditions at the time of booking

Great Course

Great course but no idea the greens had just been punched until the first green. Very disappointing. Charge full price but punched greens and no warning so we could play another course.

Disappointing

Maybe, I expected too much.

But the course was only in average conditiion. I played courses in better shape for less money in the area.

We were informed that the greens are freshly topdressed after we checked in. Would have been nice to know before.

All in all only an average experience in best case …

Absolutely the best! A masterpiece by Pete Dye. Hard but fair. The 6th hole 228 yard par 3 all carry over the water!!!! Breathtaking!

Must play in the desert

Well, I finally got a par on the famous 17th! Course was in decent shape for being so close to summer, and the staff was always super friendly. Like to play here when a good GolfNow hot deal opens up. Highly recommend at the right price!

Stadium course review

This was our first time back since the start of Covid. My wife and I have played this course many times and always loved the experience. However, this time we were extremely disappointed with the overall condition and the look of the course with all of the trees removed.. The tees and greens were generally good, however the sand traps were an absolute mess with very little sand in many. For a course of this stature we expected better.
