This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Brutal test in the wind

This course you’ve seen on tv a lot

The famous island green didn’t fail to thrill us

Probably more expensive because of it

Overall nice course just a tad expensive compared to other good ones I’ve played in area

Lots of water and today 1-3 club wind made it a challenge

Really need a green chart as greens deceptively fast and slopes

Superb

The starter was rude. Won’t let us putt for a couple of minutes as of course was busy. We played in less than 4 hours and only saw one other group on course. What was the purpose in making us hurry off the first tee if no one was on the course. Reminded me of an old drill Sargent who hadn’t ordered anybody around for a while. Don’t like paying good money to be treated like an overloaded mini. Course and esp the greens were marvelous.

Fun course

Had a great round here. Course was very beautiful with an amazing layout. Lots of fun in the 4 hours it took. Pace of play was great for a noon tee time on a Sunday. Conditions were awesome but not perfect for the big price tag. But that’s if I’m nit picking. Greens weren’t super fast but very smooth. Probably stimping around 10. Definitely want to go back.

Not what I thought

Course was not what I was expecting and in all likelihood

would not play it again.....Absolutely gorgeous vies and very nice community but was sad to see the condition it was in. The 17th was my favorite hole as I got a par and a put for birdie teeing off with Lee Trevino Tee area. Pace was slow, almost 5 hours.

Great Course

I had the pleasure of playing this course recently and loved it. A typical Pete Dye track with risk reward shots. There was quite a bit of water and many bunkers but they added to the beauty of the location. I did Birdie the Island Green which will ensure a return visit.

Challenging course

It was windy so my perception about how challenging this course is might be off. Bunkers are stupid deep but sand was good so we got out of them. Do not go left or long on your approach shot on 16, About half the holes are water holes. The course plays long so unless you drive the ball 300+ I would play the white tees. The greens were faster and had more break than what most of the other Coachella Valley courses have. We had a blast and will go back again soon.
